From Gustav Mahler to Nana Forte
On January 28, the Rockbridge Chamber Singers will present Songs of Love.  Among these varied offerings is
Gustav Mahler
Gustav Mahler's Liebst Du Um Schonheit (If You Love for Beauty),  one of five lieder composed by Mahler and based on the poems of Friedrich Ruckert.  The first four were released together in 1901.  The fifth, reportedly composed for  Mahler's wife Anna in 1902, is an exquisite gem and has become a favorite of the chamber singers as they rehearse the repertoire for this concert.
The arrangement is by a young and innovative Slovenian composer, Nana Forte.  While Mahler's original composition was arranged for voice and instruments, such as oboes, clarinets, violins, cello, etc., Ms. Forte's arrangement is
Nana Forte
for double choir.  The voices are the instruments in this arrangement.  We think it allows the simple beauty of the themes and poetry to shine through.  Our musical director has found for us an offering which we think will become a favorite for singers and audience alike.  Listen here
Please join us on January 28.  We will be singing  a varied program on the themes of love from the 14th century through today, from Monteverdi to Cole Porter and Paul McCartney.  Come in out of the cold and don't miss it!
One Sound Thing -
the Danish String Quartet
Robert Batey, music critic for the Washington Post, says, "This is one of the best quartets before the public today."  Looks can be deceiving.  These young, bearded musicians look like they just rolled off a tour bus for the next rock gig.  Don't be fooled.  These lads possess a warm, beautiful tone and technical skill second to none.  We recently stumbled upon their new CD, titled  Last Leaf.  This quartet is entirely at home with Beethoven and Brahms, but Last Leaf is a detour into Nordic folk songs and dances which they have arranged for string quartet.  The oldest of these date to around the year 1300.  The members have also composed some brand new, innovative tunes in the Nordic folk style.
Classical and folk music have always intermingled in interesting ways.  The intersections stretch back to before Bach, who slipped a German folk song into his Goldberg Variations.  Bartok and Vaugh-Williams combed the countryside collecting old folk tunes from villagers.  The Danish String Quartet continues this tradition with Last Leaf.   Here's a sample.
