Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

SRSD To Hold Deliberative Session February 7, 2018 at 7PM
A Message From SRSD Superintendent Thomas Ambrose

Dear Community Members:
I am writing to remind you that the First Session of the Annual Meeting (Deliberative Session) will be held on Wednesday, February 7th, at 7 PM in the Sanborn Regional High School Auditorium. The Deliberative Session is a special part of our local democratic process. In this meeting, the people in attendance become the legislative body and may vote to approve or amend the budget. This is one of the most important school related budget meetings of the year. I strongly encourage all community members to attend the meeting. It is also important to remember that the process is not complete until the meeting is adjourned so everyone who attends should stay until the meeting closes.

The process of developing a budget takes over four months and includes input from everyone involved in our organization. If you would like more information about the budget, all of the slides I have presented are located on the Sanborn Regional School District website.

I sincerely hope you can join us on February 7th, 2018 at 7 PM in the Sanborn Regional High School Auditorium.  Please plan to come early for the check-in process so we can have a timely start.
Senior Spotlight : James Guevin
An Article by Technology Teacher Jeff Adams

James Guevin is that smiling "techy" student that everyone asks to help with their issues with computers.  James brings a great deal of knowledge to the table when it comes to computers and computer programming to the classroom.  I had the pleasure to have James in my Creating Games class and was always amazed how he was able to take any software that he was just shown in class and learn how to create amazing things with the program far beyond what I was expecting.  I use James creation's every year to show what can be done with the gaming software that we use

In the gaming class there is always programming issues that come up with students games and if I could not come up with a solution I could always count on James to help other students solve their problem or give suggestions.  Deirdre Cotter says that "James is happily willing to give other students help with classwork!".   "I have always enjoyed James' dedication. Whether he's playing chess, working on the 3D printer, or doing school work, he always puts in the extra effort he needs to be successful" according to Mr. Giuliucci.

When James is not at school he enjoys working on computers and like every "techy" playing video games.  James is enjoys being involved in the boy scouts, where he became an Eagle scout and is currently an adult leader for the boy scouts.  Although James does not know what career field he wants to pursue after high school he thinks he would like to go into computer engineering, robotics or some other computer related field.  James has spent his last two years involved in Pre-engineering program at SST, where he is increasing his knowledge of computers even further to prepare him for college.   I feel that James is going to go far and I cannot wait to see him on a computer magazine cover in the future.

SRHS Names February Staff Members of the Month
Congratulations to Ms. Lombardo and Mr. Ouellette!

Brittany Lombardo

She works tirelessly to make Global Studies interesting and fun for all of her students, bringing her creativity into the classroom in countless ways and always finding opportunities to have students try something new. She has helped revamp the curriculum to include more hands on activities, gamification, and scenarios where students become part of the learning, instead of just hearing about it. She is always willing to volunteer to take on responsibilities and help with the planning and organizing of student activities. She is one of the freshmen class advisors and is always trying to do the best by them.

Benjamin Ouellette

SRHS Steps Up Response To Vaping
A Message From School Administration

As most of you are likely aware, the use of electronic vaporizers, or 'vapes' as they are commonly known, has become much more prevalent in our society.  For many, these devices (see image to the right) are seen as a safer alternative to cigarette smoking.  This trend has had an impact on high school students nationwide, as the use of vapes-often referred to as electronic or e-cigarettes-has exploded in recent years among teenagers.  According to a 2016 estimate by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 11.3% of high school students in the United States had used electronic-cigarettes within a 30 day period, up from less than 5% just five years earlier.  At Sanborn, we have seen use of vapes increasing as well.  Students report viewing vapes as a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes.  While this has some truth to it, the perception that vaporizer use is safe is not.

According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaporizers expose users to high levels of nicotine, which has been linked to addiction, fetal toxicity, and negative impacts to adolescent brain development.  The aerosols used to create the vapor have also been shown to contain cancer-causing chemicals and tiny particles whose effects are not fully known.  While safer than traditional cigarettes, they remain unhealthy, and have been shown to increase the possibility of cigarette use later in life.  Many of these effects, of course, are felt not just by the users themselves, but others in the vicinity of those using them.

Possession or use of a vaporizer device on school property by students is a violation of both school policy and New Hampshire state law, and will be treated as such.  At the present time, vaporizers are classified by Sanborn School Board Policy JICH as drug paraphernalia.   Policy JICH-R prescribes a mandatory 10-day suspension for those students found in possession of vaporizers:
Students procuring, possessing, using or being in the presence of drug paraphernalia and/or any controlled or illegal substance, or under the influence of any controlled or illegal substance while in any school building, on any school property, on any school bus, or at any school sponsored event shall be suspended from school for a ten (10) day period , shall be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency, and shall have a hearing with a school administrator and the superintendent

As you may have noticed, in addition to a lengthy suspension from school, students caught in possession of, or using a vaporizer in school for any reason will be reported to the Kingston Police Department for possible legal consequences.  Consequences following such a response by the KPD may include probation, community service, or fines.  It is not the intention of the district or school administrative team to get anyone in trouble.  However, we have a responsibility to protect the health and safety of all students, to uphold school board policies, and to report illegal activity the appropriate authorities.  We cannot recommend strongly enough that students stay away from any form of smoking or substance use, and we hope this helps provide one more incentive for them to make safer decisions regarding their health and that of their classmates.  If you have questions, please contact any member of our school administrative team.

SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program
A Message From Student Assistance Counselor Amanda Feeney

Later this month, students in the Freshman Class will be participating in the SOS Signs of Suicide prevention program. This program is run annually with the Freshman Class as a way for the school counselors to connect with students their first year of high school and talk about what to do if they are concerned about themselves or someone else, and identify who their supports are to help. Image result for Signs of suicide logo
Our goals in participating in this program are:
  • To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
  • To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
  • To provide students training in how to identify serious depression or potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
  • To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
  • To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it

We strongly believe that all students should participate in this informational program.  Please complete the consent form giving permission for your child to participate.  If you do not wish your child to participate, please indicate that on the form and your child will be given an alternative place to go during the presentation.
We are asking that all parents/guardians please review and sign the following permission slip by Wednesday February 7th. The link can be found in your email or here: https://goo.gl/forms/epF9w94Zp3BPi5362

Results of The Sanborn Public Hearing
by Annie Collyer, Chairman of the Sanborn Regional School District Budget Committee

Did you know that the Sanborn Regional School District Budget Committee held a Public Hearing on the  preliminary budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2018-19, on Thursday, January 11?

The preliminary budget was a 0.6% increase in spending over the current fiscal year budget. The budget  is the result of extensive discussions both with the Superintendent and his Leadership Team, and with  the District School Board.

The role of the Budget Committee is to analyze the funding of the educational needs and priorities of
the District, balanced by a concern for efficient use of taxpayer dollars, and thorough consideration of
the ability of the community to pay. They stated awareness that more than 70% of local property taxes  support the school district budget.

This year and last year, one consideration for Budget Committee members is awareness of past budget  voting, and the frequency of voter rejection of Professional Staff (teacher) contracts. The members  often stated throughout the budget preparation, how important to the District and its students it is, to  help voters pass the new teacher contract that will come before them next year.

Enrollment in the District has been dropping for many years, and continuation of that trend is predicted.   Yet, staffing has not been reduced commensurately, members noted. With this proposed budget, there  will be a staffing adjustment, as well as some shifting of spending to other high priorities for the District.

The Superintendent has identified two major areas for future investment to benefit education in the
District: more professional development and better pay for our teachers. The proposed budget
provides more professional development monies, and contains the pay raise for staff voted in last year.

Superintendent Ambrose is advocating for restoring teacher pay parity in the near future, lost by past
contract vote failures. He has identified passing a new contract next year as one top District priority.

The proposed budget, affirmed unchanged following the Public Hearing, comes before the voters at the  first voting session, called the Deliberative Session, on Wednesday, February 7. Only voters present get  to debate and then vote whether to change the final budget number to go before the voters at the  second session, at the voting booths on March 13.

A recording of the Public Hearing is available on the SAU17.org website.

The Sanborn Budget Committee urges District voters to attend the Deliberative Session on
February 7.   Voters will hear details of the budget proposal in a succinct 20-minute presentation, following which  motions to alter the proposal can be made and voted on. Please plan to attend. February 7, 7 - 9 PM at  the High School Auditorium.
