Ring in the New!
bell wolfeboro NH town hall

Bells have tolled since Chinese metallurgists first forged them some 4,000 year ago. They're also engineering marvels, designed to produce and amplify pleasing sounds across great distances - like the historic Paul Revere bell (above) that strikes the hour in Wolfeboro, N.H. This month's activity will resonate with your acoustic engineers and artisans. Watch them peal with delight!
wind chimes

High school students design and build wind chimes using their knowledge of physics and sound waves, taking into account such constraints as weight, cost, and the number of musical notes their chimes must generate. They make mathematical computations to determine the pipe lengths.

When "The Victors" fight song rings from the University of Michigan's 55-bell Burton Tower carillon, many students can hum the famous tune as they stroll. One group, however, also knows the engineering and skilled labor behind the resonant tones, having sculpted and poured metal in a course called Shaping the Sound of Bronze.
