Tu B'Shvat Learning at TABC
Tu B'Shvat provided the opportunity for the fertile imagination of the TABC faculty to take root. Each teacher discussed Tu B'Shvat from a unique angle. Among the topics discussed were: The beautiful parable from Ta'anit 5b that the greatest blessing one can give a tree (and a person) is that its progeny will follow in its way; an overview of Chazal's use of the image of roots of a tree to represent core religious values and the fruit to represent the spiritual output;the special bracha achrona after eating from the 7 minim that Israel is known for; the Mishna in Avot that one's actions are like deep roots that anchor a person; stories involving carob trees - Choni HaMa'ageil, Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai; and learning the Midrash cited in parshat Kedoshim that Hakadosh Baruch Hu engaged in the planting of trees as one of his first acts in creation and encourages us to do the same as soon as we enter Eretz Yisrael.  In a display of Torah U'Madda, one of the physics classes showed how the whole mass of a tree comes from air, conveying a powerful message about how a little growth over a long period of time can have a huge impact. The faculty at TABC represent a  kaleidoscope of approaches and perspectives every day and Tu B'Shvat was a microcosm of that strength.
TABC Rebbeim & Alumni Bond in Israel
The kesher our students have with TABC lasts a lifetime. TABC rebbeim Rabbi Scott Friedman, Rabbi Michael Hoenig and Rabbi Ezra Wiener recently returned from visiting alumni learning in yeshivot in Israel over Winter Break. They spent time in shiurim, meeting one-on-one, socializing and connecting. The trip culminated in an incredible reunion shabbaton in the Old City of Yerushalayim. Alumnus Meir Jacobs '17 enhanced the shabbaton with a siyum, made on the Aish HaTorah roof,
overlooking the Kotel and Har Habayit. On motzai Shabbat the group heard a d'var Torah from TABC Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Yosef Adler and then enjoyed a kumzitz lead by Yosef Karduner, where they were joined by TABC Dean Mr. Arthur Poleyeff, the Hoenigs (Coach Robert and Learning Specialist Ms. Donna ) and former TABC rebbe Rabbi Nosson Rich, who made aliyah this past summer. The rebbeim returned to America with proud reports of how our talmidim continue to grow as bnei Torah in Eretz Yisrael. Click here for more photos.
TABC Continues Learning
During Winter Break
School may have been out, but TABC's Beit Midrash remained open. Over the yeshiva break, TABC had tefillah and daily shiurim open to all high school boys in the community followed by open gym time. We are proud that our talmidim always feel that they can spend time in their home away from home. Click here for more photos.

Rabbi Yoni Mandelstam made a siyum on Mesechet Taanit on Thursday after he gave a shiur to the attendees.
TABC Chulent Cookoff is
Festive, Flavorful Fun
TABC's students showed off their culinary expertise at the annual Chulent Cookoff. The hallways were filled with sweet smell of chulent  on Thursday , as each team consulted their favorite recipes to prepare their chulent.  On Friday , the student body was able to sample their handiwork. The judges awarded best chulent to the team of sophomores Josh Miller, Ari Needle and Shlomo Gellman. Thank you to Grand and Essex for sponsoring many of the ingredients and to Mali Baer (Avi Baer's mother) for coordinating the ingredients for all the teams. For more photos click here.
Extra! Extra! Read all About
The Odyssey
In order to understand  The Odyssey  from a different vantage point, the students of English 9H worked collaboratively to create four digital newspapers, each one relating to one of the four adventure chapters of  The Odyssey.  As you can see if you click on the links below, e ach newspaper  included news stories, op-ed articles (columnist's opinions), feature stories, letters to the editor, a crossword puzzle, witty advertisements, photos with captions, and anything else the students envisioned in a newspaper (recipes, political cartoons, travel articles, science articles, sports articles, music reviews, etc.). The results were clever and, most importantly, showed not only how much knowledge the students gained but how they could apply it to their own world.
Mock Trial Team Makes Semi-Finals
Congratulations to TABC's Mock Trial Team on all of their successes in competition. Just this week they beat Frisch in the quarter-finals to make it into the semi-finals. We look forward to hearing more success from them next season.
Mazal Tov to Mishna Yomi Chabura
Mazal tov to the Mishnah Yomi Chaburah upon its completion of Masekhet Sukkah! The chaburah invites and welcomes all interested students who would like to begin preparing for Purim by studying Mishnayot Masekhet Megillah.

The chaburah meets on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons during the the first fifteen minutes of the Mincha break in room 15. The Mishnah Yomi Chaburah provides an excellent opportunity to study mishnayot together with Bartenura's commentary and gain a broad exposure to the building blocks for all of Torah She'be'al Peh. All interested students are welcome to join! Looking forward!
Rabbi Jachter at YU
Last Friday Rabbi Jachter spoke to the first year Semicha students at Yeshiva University's Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary about teaching emunah to high school students.  Rabbi Jachter grappled with the dilemma as to whether high school rebbeim should address issues of emunah proactively or wait until students pose questions.  The compromise approach he presented was his hallmark organic integration of emunah within the usual learning of Tanach.  Rabbi Jachter presented three examples of well-received shiurim that taught emunah within a conventional Tanach learning framework.  The presentation was very well-received and we look forward to making this into an annual event.
