Hoops for Heart 2018
Lake Park's annual fundraiser tips off February 14.

Since 1998, Lake Park's Physical Education Department has been raising money for the American Heart Association through a nationally sponsored event called Hoops for Heart. All monies raised for this annual event are donated to the American Heart Association for research in the fight against heart disease.

The format of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in 2004 helped to increase participation and generate more enthusiasm from the student body. In its first year of the new format, Lake Park raised $1,946.75. Since 2004, the P.E. Department has raised $121,709.12, with the best one-year total at an outstanding $16,124.23 in March 2011. Last year, Lancers raised an impressive $10,000.13 through t-shirt sales, concession sales and the basketball tournament.

The P.E. Department is challenging the Lake Park school community to achieve a new benchmark at this year's Hoops for Heart tournament on Wednesday, February 14. Visit the Hoops for Heart website and consider making a donation via the online fundraising page.

Academics: Even a cursory glance at Shyam Upadhyay's transcripts reveals his proclivity for STEM-related content and courses. With an impressive GPA and class rank, he is the recipient of many academic honors. By doing this, his reading comprehension and retention, as well as his writing skills, improved dramatically.

Activities: As the President of DECA, Anisa Choksi dedicates considerable time to both campus chapters and handles her duties with integrity and passion. She is positive, dependable, conscientious, loyal and kind. Anisa takes the time to not only better herself as a competitor but better the members around her. SAT Resources for Students
Tutoring available in preparation for national exam on April 10.

On Tuesday, April 10 , the SAT exam will be administered to all Lake Park juniors. Taking the SAT is an Illinois State Board of Education graduation requirement. SAT performance is an important component of college and career planning. To that end, Lake Park now provides free SAT tutoring. During the months of February, March, and early April, students can attend Khan Academy tutoring at West Campus in room 121. Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, no registration is required. Students may attend every day or periodically.

Under the guidance of Lake Park staff, students will work independently using Khan Academy . Computers will be available for students to use, or they can bring their own mobile technology device. Lake Park staff will assist students as they work on authentic reading, writing, and math questions that parallel the SAT testing experience. In fact, students can take diagnostic assessments on Khan Academy and then practice questions that are specifically aligned to their areas of academic need. This personalized alignment of questions maximizes the productivity of the tutorial experience.

For questions about SAT scores and how they impact college and career plans, contact your student's counselor.
Seal of Biliteracy
Earn distinction for demonstrating proficiency in multiple languages.

Juniors and seniors who have taken an Advanced Placement or Level 4 World Languages course and/or students with bilingual skills have the opportunity to earn a special honor based on their second language abilities. The Seal of Biliteracy will be awarded to qualifying Lake Park students who demonstrate proficiency in both English and either Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish.

The Seal of Biliteracy, offered by the State of Illinois, will appear on the student's diploma and official school transcript. Earning this distinction will be an honor that students can share with universities, future employers, and service organizations who value individuals with bilingual skills.

To earn the Seal of Biliteracy, students must meet approved proficiency levels on state approved English and foreign language assessments, as outlined on the Intent to Participate form. Applying for this recognition is voluntary and students are responsible for the cost associated with taking the qualifying assessments. An Intent to Participate form must be completed and returned to West Campus Assistant Principal, Mr. Ian Smith, by Friday, February 16 in order to be eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy.

Illinois Science Assessment Results Released
Students may request a 2016 individual score report.

In January, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released 2016 Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) results. Later this month, the 2017 ISA results will be released. The ISA is ISBE's response to a federal mandate to assess students in science (grades 5, 8, and high school). For high school students, the federal mandate requires assessment of biology. Most Lake Park ISA test takers are freshmen who are enrolled in biology.

According to ISBE, the statewide test results are mixed. These results are partially explained by an assessment that was not created by science teachers or content experts from Illinois. Therefore, ISBE is requesting in the coming years the ISA should undergo revisions that align more closely to the learning standards and instructional practices familiar to Illinois students and teachers. ISA remains a work in progress. Lake Park's ISA results (2017) will appear on the school report card that will be published in October 2018. However, because the test is undergoing revisions, results will not be used as a school accountability measure until the 2020 school year. Read the frequently asked questions provided by ISBE.

Lake Park student performance on the ISA (2016) exceeds the statewide average. At Lake Park, 53 percent of the students demonstrated proficiency, compared to 41 percent of students across the state. Students and parents may request a copy of a student's 2016 individual score report (members of the Class of 2019). Copies are available by contacting the East Campus registrar's office .
