notes from the ptsa president
Snow, Snow....Ice and Freezing Rain! 2018 is certainly starting with a blast....an arctic blast that is!

snowman_snowy_dec.jpg Hopefully, everyone knows you don't have to wait for the morning news to learn if school has been cancelled or delayed. Due to the speed of updating, the official @FCPSnews Twitter account (with blue checkmark) is generally the first and fastest mode of communication about weather delays. If you subscribe to Delayed Openings and School Closings under  News You Choose , notices will be delivered right to your inbox or you can check  www.fcps.edu  where alerts will be posted at the top of the page. Click here  to learn more about Weather Cancellation procedures. Remember that while streets here in McLean may seem fine, our boundaries stretch all the way out Georgetown Pike to Route 7 where the conditions can vary greatly. We want all our students to have a safe commute to school.

What do these missed days mean for the Green and Gold Calendar?  I'm sure your students already know that it will not change. If you miss a green day you will return on a gold day or vice versa. Click
here for a link to the LHS calendar. This is helpful in making sure your students are coming to school with the correct assignments completed.

Students are celebrating Spirit Week this week leading up our home Varsity double-header basketball games against our cross-town rival, McLean, on Friday night. Girls tip off at 5:45 pm and boys play at 7:30 pm. Girls Freshman and JV teams will play at McLean Wednesday night at 5:30 pm and 7:15 pm. Boys Freshman and JV teams will play at home Thursday night at 5:45 pm and 7:15 pm. Come support your fellow Saxons and show you school spirit! Check out the Athletic Boosters Store if you need some Langley gear.

We hope you can join us for our next Principal's Coffee/PTSA Meeting on Wed, Jan 17, 9 am at Cooper MS. We are excited to announce that Dr. Heather Tedesco will be giving a presentation about "Talking to Your Teens About the Tough Stuff." See the announcement below.

Stay Warm!

next ptsa meeting is jan 17
Please join us for the next Principal's Coffee/PTSA Meeting on Wed, Jan 17 at 9 am at Cooper MS . Our featured speaker, Dr. Heather Tedesco, will present "Talking To Your Teens About the Tough Stuff."

Now that we have all seen the Youth Survey results, she can help us keep open the lines of communication with our children so we can talk to them about difficult topics. Dr. Tedesco is an applied psychologist with a private practice in McLean, where she works with parents one-on-one and in small groups. She helps parents address concerns in their family life, shows parents how they can support their children if they struggle with motivations, anxiety, anger, or other common issues, shares ways parents can encourage healthy psychological development at any age, and helps parents take the long view of raising children who grow into happy, authentically successful adults.

Prior to Dr. Tedesco's presentation, we will provide some brief PTSA announcements as well as hear school updates from Principal Amico.

fcps academy open houses
FCPS High School Academies  a r e centers within an existing high school that offer advanced technical and specialized courses that integrate career and academic information. As many of you know, some students at Langley High School take courses during the school day (bussing provided) at one of our academies as a part of their regular schedule.

Students who are interested in finding out more information regarding academy classes can attend an academy open house. There you will have an opportunity to learn more about the academy, meet the teachers, and tour learning labs. Please see below for the schedule of academy open houses that serve Langley High School. Links to the school's web sites are also listed for more information.

Falls Church Academy: Thurs, Jan 11, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Marshall Academy: Thurs, Jan 11, 6 - 7:30 pm
Fairfax Academy: Tues, Feb 6, 6:30 - 8 pm

Please take a few moments to look at the academy web sites to see if you might be interested in taking an academy class next year. If you are interested, attend the open house, and be sure and let your school counselor know during course registration.

senior ethics forum - adult volunteers needed
This year our Senior Ethics Forum will be held on Tues, Mar 13 from 8:15 am to 2:45 pm and we need adult volunteers.

What is the LHS Senior Forum?
Seniors rotate through modules where an ethical dilemma is presented, followed by small or large group discussions. We need volunteer table leaders to work with groups of 8 students to facilitate small group discussion in each module. A brief training session for table leaders is provided.

Why should I volunteer at a Senior Forum?
Since we all know that our kids talk and listen more when their parents aren't around, senior parents, teachers and school staff do not serve in this capacity, so we need parents of underclassmen or adults outside of the Langley parent community.

You can click here to sign up. If you'd like more information, contact Kim Wenk at kbwenk@gmail.com.

You don't have to be a LHS parent to volunteer . If you know of anyone who would be interested, please give them the sign up link or refer them to Kim.
Feedback from the past senior classes has been overwhelmingly positive. We have table leaders who return year after year and truly value spending the day with Langley seniors. Don't miss the opportunity to participate in this important program.
we want to hear from YOU!
The eNews team is glad to bring  reports of our great school and its  students and staff to  the Langley parent community . The newsletter is put together by a very small group of parent volunteers without the resources to be real reporters. We compile submissions from teachers, administrators, coaches, FCPS sources, and parents and students themselves into a publication that we hope is useful to many.

If you don't see a report of your child's team's achievement, please let us know! If his or her classroom has embarked on a cool project, write to us about it! If someone is representing LHS in any venue, we would love to know. Is there someone in school who  deserves a spotlight?

Some guidelines: If it's a report of  individual achievement, the honor should be significant. We can't promote a business or an outside organization. Best stories relate to activities within the school or at least adjacent! Photos always a plus. Feel free to contact us at enewslangley@gmail.com.
