Grade 2 Field Trip to Greengate Garden Centre
In honour of Tu B'Shvat, grade 2 learned about Shevat Haminim. On Tuesday, we went on a field trip to Greengate Garden Centre. John Duncan, the manager of Greengate, spoke with the students about the Shevat Haminim and explained why most of them cannot grow in Canada. After the talk, he gave us a tour in the green house and told us about the plants they grow.
Thank you to Mr. Duncan for his time and hospitality.

Tu B'Shvat
Thank you so much to Mrs. Kaufman and her Grade 6 students for organizing a meaningful and inspiring Tu Bishvat program. We enjoyed the special fruits of the Shivat Haminim in the morning and had a fun and engaging program in the afternoon. Thank you so much to our parent volunteer pharmacist Mr. Allen Rajesky (father of Zack and Ben) who taught students in Grades 1-9 all about the important usages of trees in healing sick people. Students gained an appreciation of the necessity of trees and it gave us a deeper appreciation of the many mitzvot associated with trees. We even got to learn how pharmacists put medicine together and enjoyed making our own personalized "medicine" folders using the amazing medicinal properties of Mike and Ike!

Girls Shabbaton
We welcome three young ladies from New Jersey who came in specially for our Grades 4-8 Girls Shabbaton this weekend.Thank you to Mrs. Greenwald for organizing an amazing and inspiring Shabbaton once again. Thank you to all the hosts for the meals and accommodations.

Make a Great Day
Is it "have a great day" or "make a great day?" Here at Akiva we have been focusing on making our days great, for ourselves and others, with positive speech, actions and most importantly, a positive attitude. From passing around a kindness boomerang, making great grafitti, Junior High Boys cooking and serving a staff appreciation breakfast, acting and speaking kindly towards our "secret friends" and more, our students are immersed in positivity all day

Stop by our PINS (Positivity IN Speech and Actions) bulletin board. See some of the excitement that's been happening here, read "Words & Actions Build" bricks students wrote about each other and you will be inspired. Please share our common language and encourage your children to " make a  great  day" and I am sure your  daywill be a happier one too!

Looking forward to more excitement ahead!

Order your Mishloach Manot!
Purim, the most high-spirited of the Jewish holidays - is on its way! As you prepare for the costumes, carnivals, and Purim feasts let us prepare your mishloach manot packages. The Purim Mitzvah of mishloach manot - translated as "the giving of portions" - reminds us the being a Jew means being part of a community and celebrating our traditions together.

We will hand deliver a wonderful assortment of goodies and include a list indicating all the contributors to each mishloach manot package.
  • Fill out the order form listing the people that you would like to send mishloach manot packages to. No need to provide address information for in-town orders, just list the names of the recipients and we will do the rest!
  • The cost is $7.50 per name
  • The deadline for ordering is Tuesday, February 20, 2018 along with your payment.
Please Note:  Cards will be sent to those outside of the city.
  • Due to the growth of the city, there are some addresses that are difficult to reach due to distance. You will be given the option to deliver the package yourself or send a card for those locations we are unable to deliver to.
  • Deliveries cannot be made to the downtown core.
  • If you would like to deliver your own mishloach manot but would like us to assemble them for you, please make a note of this on your order form.
  • Reciprocal orders are available, please let us know if you would like to return the mitzvah and send a mishloach manot package to all those who send to you.
Your support is greatly appreciated by all of us at Akiva Academy, especially the children who benefit directly from this tremendous fundraising effort!

Please note, although this project is a very worthy mitzvah of supporting Jewish education and spreading friendship, the technical mitzvah of Mishloach Manot is fulfilled by giving a minimum of two food items to one person on Purim day.

We thank you for your ongoing support!
Parent's Choice Bursary 2018/19
Once again, we are pleased to offer the Parent's Choice Bursaries for the 2018/19 school year. This year our intention is to award a total of 450 bursaries (renewals and new bursaries). The parameters for the program can be found on our website,   www.theprossercharitablefoundation.ca.

There are some things which I wish to give special attention:
  1. On the application, under School Section, we have clarified the Tuition reported is the actual tuition for the student. Tuition does not include bussing, activity, supplies, etc. Any discounts (ie multiple students from same family) should also be deducted from the reported tuition.
  2. The income guideline for low income cut-off is used at the discretion of the selection committee. We do not want to discourage any family from applying. The guidelines can be found under the News/Events tab on our website.
  3. Printable applications are available on our website or see Mr. Hadden. Hand in completed applications to Mr. Hadden.
  4. Applications will be accepted from February 1, 2018 to March 23, 2018.
  5. Selection will be made in the following order: 1:  renewals; 2: students new to the school (1st year offered preferred); 3: all others (by lottery).
  6. We anticipate an increase in the number of applications we will receive and ask that they be checked for completeness before submission. Please ensure that all parts are filled in; that they are signed by both the Parent & school authority; and that each is accompanied with the back-up income documentation.
  7. If multiple students are applying from the same family, only one copy of financial documentation is required.
We look forward to working with you again this year.

Yours truly,
Kathy Prosser, Executive Director
The Prosser Charitable Foundation

Accountability Pillar Survey Parent Information
What is the Accountability Pillar?
The Accountability Pillar is a set of 16 performance measures developed to help jurisdictions assess their performance and progress in the delivery of educational outcomes to students. Included are survey measures in the Accountability Pillar survey, Provincial Achievement Tests, Diploma Examination results, and measures like High School Completion, Drop-Out Rates and Transition to Post-secondary.

As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.

The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning.

From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey.
  • In January, parents of students in grades 4-9 will receive a survey from Alberta Education.
  • In January and/or February, students in grades 4-9 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school.

Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.

Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2018, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
