Fine Motor Skills and Reading

Prior to kindergarten, fine motor skills are important for school readiness. Research indicates that fine motor skills play a role in cognition and language development. The Journal of Research in Reading recently investigated the relationship between fine motor skills and reading development in 144 kindergartners in Germany. Each child was evaluated with several fine motor skills, early readings skills and cognitive measures. The results indicated the following:

Prader-Willi Syndrome Reversed in Brain Cells Growing in the Lab

Stem cell researchers at UConn Health have reversed Prader-Willi syndrome in brain cells growing in the lab, findings they recently published in the Human Molecular Genetics.
The discovery provides clues that could lead to a treatment for Prader-Willi, a genetic disorder that occurs in about one out of every 15,000 births, and is the most common genetic cause of life-threatening childhood obesity.]

Delta Cracking Down On Service, Support Animals

It may soon be a little harder to fly with a service or support animal as one of the nation's largest airlines looks to weed out incidents of biting, urination and other misbehavior on its planes.
Delta Air Lines said this month that it will implement a new policy for travelers flying with service or support animals starting March 1.

Language is Learned in Brain Circuits that Predate Humans

It has often been claimed that humans learn language using brain components that are specifically dedicated to this purpose. Now, new evidence strongly suggests that language is in fact learned in brain systems that are also used for many other purposes and even pre-existed humans, say researchers in PNAS.
The research combines results from multiple studies involving a total of 665 participants. It shows that children learn their native language and adults learn foreign languages in evolutionarily ancient brain circuits that also are used for tasks as diverse as remembering a shopping list and learning to drive.

Study Finds Kids are Not Over-Medicated

A new study suggests that contrary to popular opinion, psychiatric medications are not over-prescribed for American kids. In fact, because of limited access to child psychiatrists, researchers worry more about under-treatment and a failure to explore other means of treatments before medications.
Investigators from Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) compared prescribing rates with prevalence rates for the most common psychiatric disorders in children, and discovered that some of these medications may be under-prescribed.

Who Are Your Real Friends? Your Brainwaves Can Tell

Popular wisdom abounds in sayings about how friendships are first formed, such as "birds of a feather flock together" and "friends are on the same wavelength."
And, as it turns out, there is more than just a grain of truth to these age-old concepts.
A new study led by Carolyn Parkinson - who was formerly based at Dartmouth College in Hanover, MA, but who is now an assistant professor of psychology working at the University of California in Los Angeles - shows that the brains of friends respond in very similar ways to the same stimuli.

Causes/Treatments for Haphephobia - Fear of Being Touched
|

Being touched by strangers or without consent can make many people uncomfortable. However, if the fear is intense, appears even when touched by family or friends, and if it causes significant distress, it may be haphephobia.
This condition is different from a hypersensitivity to touch, which is called allodynia. A person with allodynia may also avoid being touched, but they do so because it causes them to feel pain rather than fear.

In treating torticollis and plagiocephaly, I speak with a variety of parents who are referred by a variety of pediatricians. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is the phrase, "The doctor said she will outgrow it and we shouldn't worry about it." This is not only false but can be detrimental to the development and growth of a child. In my seventeen years of pediatric practice, I have never seen a problem just go away by ignoring it. Usually, the problem gets worse and starts to affect different areas. Torticollis is a head tilt or favored head position often due to tight neck muscles. Plagiocephaly is a flattening of the skull in one or more areas.

All kids can lose control of their emotions if they're feeling angry, hurt, frustrated or sad. But when some kids with ADHD (also known as ADD) get upset, their negative feelings tend to be stronger and last for a longer period of time. Some may respond to those strong feelings by becoming physically aggressive.

Twice a month, 8th grade English teacher Stephany Copeland hosts what she calls a "gender assembly" for the 55 girls she teaches at the KIPP Rise Academy in Newark, N.J. They're usually oriented around things that the girls want to talk about, and given their age, that often means the power dynamics between boys and girls.
"Little things will happen-a boy will take a picture of a girl after school, and she will say, 'Delete that,' and he'll refuse, so we do things like address that," Copeland said.
