MCEDC Annual Meeting March 8th;
Guest Speaker to Focus on Local Gov't. Finance

This year's business meeting will include guest speaker Mr. Jim Higgins, a partner with LWG, an advisory firm that focuses on accounting, audit, tax and regulatory applications to serve a variety of clients. A graduate of Ball State University, Higgins is a CPA and provides financial perspective to local governments throughout the state as well as to economic developers that participate in Ball State's basic economic development course and to accounting students that he instructs at the university. With his previous experience at the Indiana Bond Bank and Indiana State Board of Accounts, Higgins' perspective will be invaluable to Morgan County as our local government and business leaders consider the use of tax revenues to enable private sector growth that results in increased revenue for local government.

What could Amazon HQ2 bring to Indianapolis? We asked Experts to do the math

Amazon's plan to build a second U.S. headquarters, investing $5 billion and hiring 50,000 workers who average $100,000 a pop, is almost too immense to fathom.
After all, at that size, the project-called HQ2-could actually change Indiana's per-capita income. It could generate 30,000 spin-off jobs and produce hundreds of millions of dollars in state and local tax revenue.
Those are some of the projections made by economists and other experts IBJ interviewed after Indianapolis learned it had made a list of 20 cities Amazon is still considering.
Here are some back-of-the-envelope calculations these economists made about how the project could change central Indiana. They all come with lots of caveats. They are projections based on projections. And not everyone agrees.
But they provide a starting point on which to consider the scale of the proposal.
"It's so big that it's hard to put it in perspective," said Kyle Anderson, clinical assistant professor of business economics at the Indiana University
Kelley School of Business. "We look around at different projections, different companies and see their impact, but this is almost unprecedented-what the impact would be on any city, especially one the size of Indianapolis."

Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2010, the population was 68,894. The county seat is Martinsville. Morgan is one of seven counties contiguous to Marion County, and is located Southwest of Marion County and Indianapolis The county is divided into 14 townships. There are two larger urban areas, Martinsville, the county seat in the central part of the county and Mooresville in the north.
Morgan County was formed in 1822. It was named for Gen. Daniel Morgan, the "Old Waggoner," who defeated the British at the Battle of Cowpens in the Revolutionary War. This was one of the turning points in the Revolutionary War in the Southern states and led to an eventual victory with the surrender of the British Army at the Siege of Yorktown in Virginia.
