UMCOR Early Response disaster recovery training

Do congregants want to do "something" to help flood survivors in Texas, Florida and other places?  How about getting trained to actually go to places affected by natural disasters?  Would you like to be "the Hands and Feet of Jesus"?

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has a training program called Early Response Teams which prepares folks to work in disaster sites such as Texas and Florida, as well as in our own communities, knowing what to do and how to do the work safely, being self sufficient and self sustaining so as not to place any additional burdens on the devastated community.

A Basic Early Response Team (ERT) class will be held on Jan. 20 at the Rush UMC, 6200 Rush-Lima Rd. (Rt 15A) Rush, NY at 8 AM and concluding at 5 PM.  The class members will receive an ERT manual, training, hands-on practice placing a tarp on a portable roof, discussions of what to say and what not to say to survivors, what tools and equipment to use, how to clean out a flooded house, what personal protective equipment is needed, as well as coffee, snacks and lunch, a Safe Sanctuaries background check, and an UMCOR photo ID badge all for just $25.00.  People from other denominations are welcome to attend.  Please register for the class online at www.tinyurl.com/RushERT. For questions, contact Donna Cullen at [email protected].

Requirements are only that one be 18 or over, of average physical fitness, able to carry a bucket of water up a set of stairs, available on short notice (many of us are retired), and willing to be a team player, taking directions from an experienced team leader.  A typical ERT trip includes travel time and 3 days on-site of actual disaster response, then home again.

Regional Prayer Gathering

WHEN: January 28th, 2018
WHERE: United Church of Painted Post, 201 Hamilton Street, Painted Post , NY 14870
TIME: 2:30-4:00 pm

Good news!
The second of the regional prayer gatherings that we will hold throughout the district will be at the United Church of Painted Post.(see address above), on Sunday, January 28, from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Attendees will see a video made by our Conference Leadership Team, as they lead us in prayer. Those of you who were at Annual Conference last June received a prayer journal in your packet. Please bring that with you, but if you have already used it, or if you weren't at Annual Conference, please bring a notebook or a journal with you. No one will see what you write, but you. The video will lead us through different aspects of prayer using the A.C.T.S. model. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication).

This Gathering is open to ALL!
This is not a Gathering just for Clergy.
Our Laity are welcome too!!!!

Alert:  Recent Guardian Life PFL letter
does not pertain to UNY churches

Guardian Life has sent a letter to churches of the Upper New York Conference regarding NYS Paid Family Leave (PFL). Because most of the information in the letter DOES NOT PERTAIN TO UNY CHURCHES, we are asking recipients to disregard and destroy the letter so that no further misunderstandings occur.

Simply stated: The Upper New York Conference will arrange for and provide Paid Family Leave coverage for clergy and lay employees of UNY churches. There will be no cost assessed to local churches in 2018. There should be NO withholding from salaries. There is information on the UNY website on the Church Employers page. There will be a new page created with more details once we have claim forms with an accurate claims address. Continue watching Conference Communication channels for more information.
