Jane Marie Wilson of Mama Wilson's Cookies & Cakes was honored as the
2017 Small Business Person of the Year at the Chamber's Annual Banquet on October 5th. She is the first female to receive this award.
We received eight nominations this year, and a team of judges from Chambers and Economic Developer organizations from across the state selected the recipient.

Dalton State's 2016 Regional Economic Impact Up 13%
|
For the second straight year, Dalton State College posted double digit
growth
in its economic impact on northwest Georgia, pumping more than $136 million into the regional economy last year and supporting more than 1,500 jobs, according to a report released recently by the Georgia Board of Regents.

Georgia Economic Developers Association Conference
|
Brian Cooksey, Shaw Industries Group, Inc. and Michael Fennell, GNTC, did a fabulous job serving as panelists at the annual Georgia Economic Developers Association Conference. They did a great job telling Dalton's story and sharing about Whitfield County's workforce pipeline to economic development leaders across the State.
|
The town recently received a $315,000 grant from the federal Appalachian Regional Commission. It will use that and $235,000 from the 2015 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) to extend sewer from an existing Dalton Utilities sewer line serving the nearby Pilgrim's Pride chicken hatchery to downtown and to Cohutta's central park.
Carl Campbell, executive director of the Dalton-Whitfield Joint Development Authority, says he thinks the sewer project will boost economic growth in Cohutta.

Georgia's 2018 Small Business ROCK STARS

For the fifth year in a row, the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) and the Georgia Economic Developers Association (GEDA) are teaming up to find Georgia's outstanding small businesses.
Recognizing any type of small business that employs under 100, they salute the risks, innovations, outreach and impact of Georgia's small businesses.
Nominate a company today who you believe stands above the rest! The deadline to apply is October 31, 2017. The winners will be notified by January 1, 2018 and are expected to attend the awards luncheon on March 19, 2018.

How 30 Business Owners Set & Achieve Their Goals

We interact with hundreds of business owners and executive leaders each year and if you give us more than 10 minutes, the conversation will veer toward the goals for their business and ours. For most of us, we go to sleep and wake up thinking about our businesses.
With the year coming to a close, we are right in the middle of the crucial fourth quarter when most of us begin evaluating the current year and planning for next year. For the last couple of years my business partner and I have met with two other business owners and friends for a planning session. We review and offer feedback on each other's goals and it has been invaluable. This year, I thought it would be interesting to hear from a few more people. So, I asked 30 business owners and colleagues two questions:
- What's your primary focus for 2017 in the life of your business?
- What goal-setting system or process will you utilize to accomplish this primary focus?
