GeoDesign Promotes Thomas Thomann, PhD, PE to Senior Principal  
 
We are proud to announce that Thomas Thomann, PhD, PE has been promoted to Senior Principal and shareholder, joining founders Ted von Rosenvinge, PE and Ulrich LaFosse, PE. Tom leads our Metro New York consulting practice. Earning his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College, he obtained his M.S. and PhD in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical concentration from the University of Michigan.
 
Tom provides geotechnical, geostructural and earthquake engineering services for major buildings and bridges. Some current projects include:
  • Essex Crossing, Manhattan -
    Performing geotechnical and support of excavation (SOE) design and construction services for the majority of the 10 high rise buildings being constructed or proposed at this $1 billion development site.
  • The Eleventh, Manhattan - Providing support of excavation design and construction services for this $1 billion site that includes 30 and 40 story buildings.  Designed a challenging and innovative SOE system to replace the High Line foundations for the purpose of maximizing the below grade space.
  • 25 Park Row, Manhattan - Performing geotechnical and support of excavation design and construction services for this equivalent 70-story building with a 25 foot deep excavation adjacent to a subway.
  • Jersey City Waterfront - Providing engineering design services for many buildings and waterfront structures, including the 41-story Ellipse building and stabilization of various waterfront piers and bulkheads.
  • Domino Sugar, Brooklyn - Providing geotechnical and SOE engineering services for several high rise buildings and reconstruction of the landmarked refinery building, which are part of a $3 billion redevelopment project on the East River waterfront.
He has also performed geotechnical earthquake engineering for the new Tappan Zee Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge.  
 
Tom has authored over a dozen technical publications and is a registered Professional Engineer in several states. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Deep Foundations Institute, and the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering.
