A CRASH-COURSE in The Gospel of Mark, led by Rev. John Jenkins
Session #4 of 5
Sundays, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM, Chapel
Wednesdays, Noon - 1:00 PM, Youth Room/Upper Tyler Hall

Mark's Gospel will be read in our Sunday Eucharistic liturgies throughout this year (Lectionary Year A: Matthew; Year B: Mark; Year C: Luke), so this is an ideal time to learn about its background, context and major theological themes. This short course will broaden your understanding and engagement with the themes of our liturgical music, prayers, and preaching throughout the coming year. There is no book for class, but all are encouraged to invest the time necessary to read the full Gospel in one sitting-about an hour and a half.

Sessions 1 and 2: We will view a video presentation of the entire Gospel of Mark-a solo recitation-in order to garner a sense of the whole story as early Christians might have experienced it and which is markedly different from what we experience in our weekly lectionary readings.
Sessions 3: Histor ical context and overview
Sessions 4 & 5:  Major Theological themes
Creation Care Formation Classes
Sundays, 9:30 - 10:30 AM, Berlin Room

Join the Creation Care team Sunday, February 4, for the first of eight sessions on David George Haskell's book, The Forest Unseen, a Year's Watch in Nature

The mission of the Saint Paul's Creation Care team (CCT) is threefold - inspiration, education and initiation.  David Haskell's book offers the entire package:  a year-long experience encompassing a love for God's creation, encouragement of personal stories, and a commitment to addressing our world's environmental crisis. During 2018 there will be eight Formation Sunday classes, two during each season.

David Haskell is Chairman of the Department of Biology at the University of the South.  Born in Britain, he graduated with first honors from Oxford University in 1990 and earned a Ph. D at Cornell.  He lives in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he and his wife run a homestead, Cudzoo Farms, growing food and selling goat milk soaps.  Visit www.theforestunseen.com.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Contact Bryan Haltermann for more information.
Confirmation for 9th and 10th graders
Confirmation for 9th and 10th graders continues Sunday, February 4, 9:30 AM in the Conference Room.   Email Ranie with questions.

My Faith - My Life -- grades 6-12
Leader: Todd Shafer
Youth Formation held in the Youth Room, Upstairs Parish House.  But first, breakfast to get the morning going!

SPARK -- Ages 8-10 or grades 3-5
Leader: Coleman Graham
Location: Room #1, Children's Ministries Center
Our older children will again immerse themselves in SPARK, where they will work with the same themes and Scripture that we all encounter in common worship. Every lesson follows a four-part pattern: Gather, Open the Bible, Activate Faith, and Send. Week after week, the children and their leaders gather together, explore the Scriptures, enjoy one another's company, pray, and discover God's presence in their midst.
Godly Play -- Ages 4-7
Leaders: Ginny Henson & Kim Butler
Location: Room #2 Children's Ministry Center
ALL children inherently know God, but it is up to us to give them the language of the Christian faith so they can grow to make meaning of our faith in their own lives. Godly Play is a profound method rooted in Montessori principles that forms child spirituality by attending to their natural gifts for wonder and discovery. Children are greeted at the door of the Godly Play room by Ginny, the "door person." It is VERY important for parents to respect the boundary of the door threshold by not entering the children's sacred space--their Godly Play room. We cannot wait to welcome your children each Sunday!
