The Edmonton Community Foundation is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 Vital Signs Grant which supports initiatives designed to increase the sense of belonging to community. 

Priority will be given to projects serving people with a high risk of social isolation as identified in the Vital Signs report (those living in poverty, new Canadians, Indigenous people, people with disabilities, seniors, and LGBTQ people), especially initiatives that address intersectionality.

Applicants can apply for up to $10,000 to support their initiative. Charities can only receive one grant per calendar year. Funding is not intended to support existing or ongoing activities, but may support the enhancement of existing initiatives. Examples of initiatives that might be supported include events, pilots or prototypes, initiatives that may help marginalized communities be more engaged with existing programming, and organizational or community learning opportunities.

The next deadline is June 15, 2018 for initiatives after August 1, 2018.

In the wake of recent cyber attacks, nonprofit organizations with unsophisticated cyber security measures may be concerned. This article provides eight tips for how nonprofits can strengthen their security.

Memory cafes are part of the growing movement to make communities dementia-friendly and are for individuals living with Alzheimer's or a related disorder and they are also for family members, friends, and professional caregivers of these individuals. The cafes offer social connection, support, invigorating activity, and information. They can be developed and run by many types of organizations including seniors centres, social service or health care providers, faith communities, colleges, museums, restaurants, and more.

Jewish Family & Children's Service in Boston has developed the Memory Cafe Toolkit which provides instructions to help launch and sustain a memory cafe as well as templates that can be downloaded and adapted.

You want to share the impact volunteers have in your organization and in the community, but often the information you track doesn't help you tell that story. This webinar will help you move past number of volunteers and number of hours and start telling the real story. You'll learn about information gathering and the key components to good storytelling, how to evaluate your current measurements, how to build support for a more thorough measurement and evaluation program, and how to engage other staff - paid and volunteer - in this work. You'll also receive a worksheet to help you begin to tell the story of volunteer impact in your organization.

With legal marijuana just around the corner, employers need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities. Organizations and HR professionals need to answer questions regarding acceptable level of use, required policies and procedures, and violation of rules.

Using the "Workplace marijuana possession/use" case study, this session will discuss the myths and realities of cannabis usage in the workplace, including types of cannabis products, medical marijuana, recreational uses, human rights vs privacy vs safety, and workplace readiness.

Colin Hatcher, Railway Historian, will make a short presentation at 3 p.m. on the Bonnie Doon Streetcar. There is no admission charge thanks to sponsor Age Friendly Edmonton. Sponsors helped fund a display project, matching local youth to seniors and their stories. Displays have been developed on diverse topics, e.g. Women and Work, Transportation in Bonnie Doon, Bonnie Doon's Sports Heroes, Immigrant Stories, etc. These complement the 100th anniversary book project, Memories of Bonnie Doon, which is scheduled for publication in September 2018.

Bonnie Doon Hall is wheelchair accessible. Tea, coffee, cakes and squares will be served. Seniors are welcome to bring their families and grandchildren. There will be special activities for the kids.

EPCOR is proposing to build a new solar farm on their property just south of the existing E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant near Cameron Heights. If approved, the solar farm will generate renewable energy to help power the existing E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant and its water treatment and distribution processes, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
