BC SCIENCE FACULTY SHOWCASES THEIR WORK FOR NYS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FACULTY
BC's Middle School Science Department were asked to showcase for their counterparts at other independent schools how they develop their Project Based Learning curriculum. Part of this NYSAIS workshop included a trip to the Beta Lab to share some of our 6th - 8th graders' PBL work, presented by the students themselves! Photos .
STUDENTS INVESTIGATE: IS MINIMUM WAGE IS A LIVING WAGE?
7th graders in Math Teacher and Middle School Assistant Director Yabome Kabia's pre-algebra classes are exploring "How can we determine a living wage?" through project-based learning. Speakers included labor and employment lawyer Walter Kane. 

Students engaged in a simulation of life on minimum wage, including monthly costs and income after taxes, in multiple U.S. cities, while experiencing random "life events" that positively or negatively impacted those factors. After their research and analysis, they presented an appropriate living wage for their city, supporting their recommendations with mathematical calculations, graphs and verbal analysis.
7 th GRADERS TACKLE HOW TO STOP THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
7th graders have been working together to answer the question, "How can citizen scientists continue to use technology to further our understanding of the universe and to promote the well-being of humans?" They presented their answers on topics like climate change, saving animals, and discovering new life in space to parents and students of the BC community. Photos
1ST GRADERS VISIT LINCOLN PLACE & CONDUCT Q&A WITH BOB VITALO
1st graders peppered Head of School Bob Vitalo with questions during a recent interview and tour of Lincoln Place. They were curious about his job, the history of Berkeley Carroll, and what life at BC will be like when they are in Middle and Upper School. Photos .
BC SPEECH & DEBATE EARNS HIGH SCORES AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
Students on the Speech & Debate team continue to excel at competitive national tournaments! At a recent 3-day event hosted at Columbia University, 7 competitors in particular earned high accolades.

In Varsity Public Forum Debate regarding Catalonian independence, two teams advanced to elimination rounds: Lisette M. '19 & June F. '21 and Maija F. '19 & June M. '19 (who earned a half bid for the NY State Championships in April).


Mosab H. '19 advanced to semifinals (11th overall) in Original Interpretation (prose & poetry). Ellie P. '18 took 6th place in finals in Dramatic Performance. Gabby W. '18 advanced to the final round of Student Congress, another strong showing in this year's consistent streak of persuasive legislative oratories.
SENIOR SPEAKERS
Congratulations to this week's Senior Speakers, (L-R) Lukas Y., Allen L., Eva F., and Blue S.!

Lukas talked about how knowing your passion is a privilege that everyone should chase and hold on to. Allen chronicled his love story with music, beginning with Taylor Swift and aided by good friends and the app Shazam.

Eva told the story of some scary moments with her younger sister, who has severe food allergies, and who Eva learned is more than capable of taking care of herself. Blue talked about her compulsion to document her teenage years on Instagram through photos and videos.
6TH GRADERS EXPLAIN COMBINED SEWAGE OVERFLOW IN THEIR 1-MINUTE VIDEO
Check out this video on combined sewage overflow created by Lily B. '24, Ben G. '24, and Oona B. '24 during a 6th grade science unit on the relationship between humans and plants in NYC. Students also wrote letters to government officials asking for their support of more bioswales (landscape elements designed to concentrate or remove silt and pollution out of surface runoff water), greenroofs and local food sources.

WORLD AFFAIRS BREAKFAST CLUB RECAP
Don't miss Keely C. '18's recap of last week's meeting on protests in Iran with BC parent and ophthalmologist Dr. Mehryar Sadeghi, who was forced to flee the country in 1982 after he was branded an “intellectual” by the Ayatollah Khomeini regime.
5TH GRADE VISITS EGYPTIAN EXHIBIT AT BROOKLYN MUSEUM
5th graders sketched and took notes at the  Brooklyn Museum  on Egyptian artifacts and mummies to prepare for their own Egyptian Tomb exhibit here at BC this spring. (They also enjoyed some bonding time on the sunny rooftop after returning to school.)
LOWER SCHOOL CELEBRATED MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
The Lower School reflected on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a recent assembly, which included a performance by the 4th Grade Chorus.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: VANESSA PAIGE
Congratulations to Lower School Dance Teacher Vanessa Paige who recently won the Eba Award for 30 Years of Innovation and Excellence in Choreography and Education. She recently performed in "Angels Of Pompeii" at the 92nd St. Y, through the Isadora Duncan International Institute where she is completing her Level 2 certification. Her most recent piece had a cast of dancers ranging from teenagers to dancers in their 70s. Learn more .
