KHC Annual Meeting
Over 100 KHC members were in attendance Saturday, January 27, at the Capital Plaza Hotel in Topeka for the 2018 Annual Membership Meeting.
Attendees were entertained by Cowboy Poet, Geff Dawson with his wife Dawn and their grandaughter, Haddie. Volunteers were recognized for their service by Jim Thomas. The following three KHC Directors were re-elected to the Board: Kallie Emig, Jim Thomas and Dr. Beth Davis.
Excective Director, Justine Staten, reviewed the events and accomplishments from 2017 and reminded everyone that the Kansas Horse Council is in it's 25 year!
The meal, entertainment and program were excellent.
Kim Mertz and Chris Newell, adult children of KHC Founder Bud Newell, presented the Bud Newell Award to long time KHC member, Chris Kaegi-Stevens, for her dedication to the continued growth and prosperity of the organization.

New at EquiFest - Art Show & Sale with Cowboy Poetry Exhibition
Heritage Hall, just right outside the north doors of Maner Conference Center / Mall of EquiFest, (follow the signs) will hold the works of many renowned artists during EquiFest 2018. A portion of each sale will be donated by the artist to the Kansas Horse Council Foundation to assist with providing scholarships to students involved in the equine industry.
Works from the following artists will be for sale: Hugh Greer, Jim Clements, Don Dane, Earl Kuhn, Dino Cornay, Lori Gustafson, John Keeling, Jenny Forge, Maura Landry, Rodney Hoover, Kim Taggart, Ann Carter and more. Several of the artists will be onsite.
At 10:00, 2:00 and 4:00 take a few minutes to visit the gallery and relax to the sound of original Cowboy Poetry performed by Geff Dawson, Delbert Shields and Tim Kean.

Once again the Kansas Horse Council Foundation is hosting its annual fund raiser at EquiFest of Kansas.
There will be a huge
Silent Auction in the Mall of EquiFest both Friday and Saturday. The auction ends at 5 each day.
Donations of auction items or monetary contributions are most welcome!! Feel free to bring your donation by the auction during EquiFest. If you have an item that needs to be picked up prior to the event please call Pattie Stalder, 785-456-3278.
There will also be a
50/50 Cash Raffle held during the John Ballweg Memorial Ranch Rodeo on Friday and Saturday nights so be sure and get your tickets which will be sold during the rodeo.
Funds are also being raised this year through sales at the
Art Show in Heritage Hall.
Please help us provide scholarships to those students involved in the equine industry. Scholarship application information is available on the KHC website,

KHC Foundation Chairman Search
Seeking a Chairperson to take the reins!
After 5 years, our esteemed Chair, Theresa Peddicord is "retiring". If you are energetic, organized, and have a philanthropic heart, we need YOU.
This is a volunteer position responsible for overseeing and managing the Silent Auction at Equifest which is the primary fundraiser for the Kansas Horse Council Scholarships Program. Cumulatively over the years, the KHC Scholarships Program has awarded over $108,000 to qualifying applicants. The Scholarships are presented at the annual awards banquet in June.

January 24, 2018 - Today, an updated bill was introduced in the House Committee on Federal and State Affairs by Representatives Adam Lusker and Larry Hibbard. While we already have two bills in the Kansas Legislature, neither bill comprehensively addressed one of our largest hurdles: The companies which operate the state-owned casinos continually threaten the state with lawsuits if the tax rate were to change.

THE UNWANTED HORSE COALITION IS COMMITTED TO HELPING UNWANTED HORSES BY:
- Educating current and future horse owners on responsible ownership, proper care and breeding, and options available before a horse becomes unwanted
- Raising awareness about the unwanted horse issue and its impact on horses and the horse industry
- Reducing the number of unwanted horses and working toward eliminating the problem
- Ensuring that horses are treated humanely and with dignity
- Facilitating the exchange of information on adoption, care, and alternative careers
- Providing information on end-of-life decisions, including veterinary decisions, euthanasia, and disposal
- Explaining the issue through presentations at industry gatherings, including horse association meetings, conferences, symposiums, and horse fairs.
