The book consists of short daily meditations with a different overall theme for each week of Lent based on Holtz's pilgrimages and extensive travels. Ash Wednesday Service
St. Brendan's will mark the beginning of our Lenten season with a lay-led Ash Wednesday service at 4pm on February 14th. This brief, lay-led meaningful
service includes the imposition of ashes and congregational participation.
This is an opportunity for each of us to join together and to prepare for Lent
and the Easter season to follow. Please consider inviting others to attend.

Third Thursday Music Gatherings
A series of monthly creative music gatherings will be held the third Thursday of the month, beginning February 15th from 6-8pm at Saint Brendan's hall. Organized by Deer Isle residents Tom van Buren and Hank Whitsett (Mountainville Records), the monthly sessions provide a stage for creative musicians and singers in multiple genres to come together to share a tune - folk, blues, jazz and beyond.
The gatherings continue the third Thursdays of the month, March 15, April 19,
May 17 and June 21st.
All are welcome to come listen and enjoy! Donations are welcome.

Women's Wilderness Retreat 2018
It's not too soon to mark your calendars! The annual St. Brendan's Women's Retreat to Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps will be held Tuesday, September 4 - Friday, September 7, 2018. This gorgeous and private 1885 camp is located inside Baxter State Park AND (the camp, not the park) is accessible by a 3.3 mile hike or by float plane.

Scripture Notes for the Fifth Sunday After Epiphany:
Today's Gospel continues Mark's account of the first events in
Jesus' ministry. Once again, Jesus was faced with illness which he cured and evil spirits which
he cast out. But rather than stay in that place as a healer, he moves on to announce the good news
of God's Kingdom in other places as well.
The first reading proclaims God as ruler and creator of all things. God is incomparable and inexhaustible, and God's power is the source of our life and that power animates our lives and our ministry.
In the second reading, Paul is responding to another problem in the Corinthian church. Wandering preachers had come to them and, preaching for money, had proclaimed strange versions of the Gospel. Paul wants to make it clear that his is the Gospel of Christ and the proof that he is not altering it to be popular is that he does not ask for money.
It is the proclamation of Christ that is central. We are called and converted by that message and baptized into that faith. We gather at the Lord's Table in response, for empowerment, but we also gather in order to be sent forth in that power to proclaim the message to others.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses especially Rev. Edward Dufresne, William Rice Sr., Elaine Graham, Patricia P,
Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Kathy Gray, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Nancy Stearns, Andrew Harriman, Tom Davenport, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Sen. John McCain, Henry 'Hank' Millon, George A. Smith, Gladys Smith, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Claire. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,
and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
all those in ministries of teaching and Christian formation. For the work of Episcopal Relief & Development.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
Arochukwu/Ohafia - (Aba, Nigeria)
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for First Baptist Church, Brooklin.
