Dear Colleagues:

We have held our Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) events for the past several years, providing free dental care to hundreds of underserved children in the Columbus area, but the event we are hosting tomorrow - Friday - is one that will stand out for years to come. The day will be extra special because it gives us a chance to showcase on a national level all that our students, residents, staff, and faculty do to make our GKAS events such a successful experience for so many.

The reason we have this remarkable opportunity is that our college was selected from a pool of dental schools that competed to be the National Kick-off Site for the American Dental Association's GKAS 2018 program. Our record of service with GKAS events and the outstanding engagement we have had with the Ohio Dental Association and our state legislature have helped to earn us this honor. How excited we all are to be recognized for our accomplishments in this very special way! I am particularly pleased that we will be able to share with dental professionals across the country the results of our students' hard work and their collaborations with our faculty.

Year after year, our dental and dental hygiene students have planned, organized, and run our biannual GKAS events. They have raised funds to support the program; secured donations of materials from dental supply companies; promoted the program at schools and communities where children need dental care; and they have managed all the operational aspects of the day. Our GKAS events have been and continue to be a result of the energy and efforts of our outstanding students. It is also significant that they recruit full-time and part-time faculty to provide the professional oversight necessary for patient care at these events. Working together, students and faculty complete exams, take radiographs, plan treatments, give oral hygiene instruction, and carry out hundreds of procedures while our staff volunteers support the administrative aspects of the event. What a way to build strong relationships in our college community!

We are also proud that the Ohio Dental Association's leaders and local legislators join our GKAS events each year to see firsthand "all the good that is being done." Their presence demonstrates their support for us, and it sends a strong message about the importance of these events to all who are part of such a remarkable undertaking. As they provide dental care for underserved children, our students also learn about the importance of organized dentistry, and they realize the value of allowing our legislators to see how our profession cares for those in need. GKAS is an inspiration for everyone involved.

Along with the presidents of the American Dental Association and its Foundation, there will be many other officials and supporters of this national program on site at our college today and tomorrow, as they gather to see how Ohio State's College of Dentistry conducts GKAS events. We will give them a warm Buckeye welcome, and we will show them "how it is done" at this event that we all will remember for years to come!
