Vol. 8, Iss. 4
February 1, 2018

Dear Parents,

"One more chapter" was my mantra growing up. Some of my fondest memories from childhood were of time I spent with my dad and mom reading to me before bedtime; and as I got older, it was my turn to read to them.

Growing up, this was always one of my favorite times of the day--I still cherish those stories and the time we spent together especially because I know how busy they both were. My mom was a teacher, and I am sure she had papers to grade. My dad always had projects to work on at the house. But, no matter how busy they were, we always had our reading time. My favorite books were the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and I think that we read each book in the series at least ten times!

My son, who is now a junior in college, will still talk about us reading the Harry Potter books, and when he was older, "The Count of Monte Cristo." Like many families, there were many nights we skipped reading because life got in the way, but I treasure every evening when we made the time.

Today is National Read Aloud Day. I wanted to share my love of stories with the students, and I was fortunate to spend the day reading to our kids. I spent time in every grade level today from kindergarten to eighth grade. We read old favorites, new books, stories that go with what they are studying and some that were "just for fun."

Teachers know how important reading aloud is in helping their students grow. According to the International Literacy Association, " Reading aloud every day to your students is a research-based, proven way to motivate your students to read on their own, model good reading, promote critical thinking, and create a sense of community in your classroom." If it works in a classroom, imagine what it can do in your home.

I'd like to encourage you to take time today, and every day to read with your child, no matter how old they are. Everyone likes to listen to a good story and spend time with people that matter the most to them.

Let me know your favorite books to read as a family!

Sincerely,

Diana Simpson

The Father Daughter Dance will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 3, at BFA. We're looking forward to a fantastic evening, but we still need  volunteers to help make this event a success, so if you are interested, please sign up today!

SHOW YOUR LOVE WITH SMENCILS
Send a pencil gram to your child for Valentine's Day!  Smencils are No. 2 graphite pencils made from recycled newspaper, that are fun to write with because they're colorful and have a unique scent, such as bubble gum or blue raspberry. You also can include a personal message with your gift.

Smencils are $2 for a single pencil, and $10 for a set of six. Order online through the BFA Store by Tuesday, Feb. 13, and the eighth graders will deliver them on Valentine's Day! Proceeds benefit the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C.

HEARING AND VISION SCREENINGS NEXT WEEK;
KIDS--BRING YOUR GLASSES OR WEAR CONTACTS

BFA will conduct our annual hearing and vision screenings at school on  Monday Feb. 5, and Tuesday, Feb. 6. Hearing and vision impact learning, so it is important to conduct screening, and Colorado law (C.R.S. 22-1-116) states that students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 should be tested for sight and hearing. We also screen students that are new to the district and any referrals.

This year, the school has contracted with Tender Care Consulting, LLC, for the screenings. It is important to note that this is a screening, not a complete exam.  If your student wears prescription glasses or contacts, it is necessary that he/she wear them during the screening

You will receive a letter if your student does not pass the screening. Students with concerns should be evaluated by a health care professional. Please take the letter to your appointment and have the provider complete the bottom of the form, and return it to your school's health office.

Colorado Department of Education Standards for  hearing and  vision are available online.

Please  contact the Health Room if you have questions or concerns about your student.

DODGEBALL FOR DOLLARS

The  student council and  Mr. Macias would like to invite our Middle School kids to participate in " Dodgeball for Dollars" from 12:45 -3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22 , in the Thunder Gym. This event is held in conjunction with our elementary students' Jump Rope for Heart activities, and funds raised by our middle school students will benefit both the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Each class will form a 10-person team to compete in the Dodgeball game. Each team will be charged a $50 competition fee ($5 per person if the team has the maximum number of players). If more than 10 students from one class want to be on a team, then they can talk to their homeroom teacher about creating a second team. The $50 team fee is due prior to the games on Feb. 22. A trophy will be awarded to the class that wins the tournament!

If your student would rather cheer on the teams, they are encouraged to bring in a $2 donation to watch the event. Students who don't want to participate as an observer or player will take part in an extra study hall. Observers (including any parents who want to watch) can bring in their optional $2 donation the day of the event.

We're looking forward to this friendly competition to raise money for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society!

ALL THAT CHANGE WEIGHING YOU DOWN? PUT IT TO GOOD USE!

Let's support the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip at their  bake sale on Thursday, Feb. 15 Goodies will be sold from 7:30 - 8:10 a.m. and 2:45 - 3:15 p.m. Please send in those quarters (goodies will be sold for $0.50 - $2.00) and support their efforts!

MS. LINDGREN'S CLASS AND MYLES ROSS ARE IN THE LEAD!

Last week, we introduced you to Sam Leclaire (pictured here), a first grader at BFA who spoke to students at the Jump Rope for Heart kick-off assembly. Sam, who was born with a 'special heart,' inspired us to help raise funds for kids like him who  who have 'special hearts' and need medications, surgeries or could benefit from research.

This week, we're happy to tell you that we've raised a little more than $4,000 toward our $18,000 goal.  Ms. Lindgren's class is in the lead for most participation and Myles Ross from Mrs. Brook's kindergarten class is in the lead for highest amount raised with $325.

Thanks to all the parents who have supported their student's efforts to date.  We encourage those interested in raising money for kids with 'special hearts' to send emails out to family and friends--experts say this is the best way to reach our goal of $18,000

If we are able to meet this goal, the class with the most participation will get to turn Mrs. Simpson , Mr. Gomez , and Mrs. Bauer into ice cream sundaes during an assembly. Envelopes can be turned in any time, but we'd like to receive all donations by the day of the event (Feb. 15 and 20).

For the full article which includes the Jump Rope for Heart schedule, click here or see the recent news on the BFA website.  Parents are welcome, and volunteers are needed at the J ump Rope for Heart events on Feb. 15 and 20.

STUDENTS GO EXPLORING

Mrs. Tickle and Mrs. Ward have organized another amazing experience for our students! T he week of March 5, they are bringing CaveSim to kids in grades K-5 (full day kindie and p.m. only)  and 8. Invented by a caver and MIT engineer, CaveSim makes highly realistic artificial caves that teach STEM concepts. During the programs, students explore 60 feet of cave passages filled with artificial cave formations, and learn a huge amount about caves, conservation, bats, geology, biology, chemistry, and a host of other subjects.

Parents of kids in grades k-5 and 8--be sure to look for information from your teacher about registering for this activity. To find out more about CaveSim, check out their website.

LOOKING FOR DEDICATED LEADERS TO SERVE ON BFA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Following is a summary of BFA Board President Bill Castor's Jan. 29 message to BFA families:

The Ben Franklin Academy (BFA) community is seeking leaders, who are passionate about and committed to BFA's mission and vision, to serve on the seven-member, volunteer BFA Board of Directors (Board). This spring, our community will elect one (1) director and the BFA Board will appoint one (1) director in accordance with the Board of Directors Election Policy.  Each seat is for a three-year term. I f you or someone you know is committed to the future success of BFA and passionate about having a voice in that success, please consider a nomination for a Board seat. Please see the  Board Elections page on the BFA website for more details on the appointment/election process and qualifications.

If you are interested in serving on the Board or would like to nominate another BFA parent, you must complete the Nomination Form no later than 11:59 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23. The form is your opportunity to let the BFA community know why you, or someone you know, would be an asset to the Board and to our students and community.

All Board nominees are expected to participate in the Q&A session/candidate forum at
5 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, in the Dana Library. Voting by the Parent Voting Group for the one (1) open elected seat will take place electronically from  Friday, March 30, through Monday, April 9. Each family within the Parent Voting Group can vote for one candidate. Results of the election will be announced and the appointment by the Board will made at the regularly scheduled Board meeting on  Tuesday, April 17.

BFA will continue to have a positive affect on the students, families and community we serve, and our Board will play a central role in this important work. Please consider nominating yourself or someone you think would be an asset to the Board, for an open seat now or in the future.

Grocery
YOUR WEEKLY GROCERY STOP CAN EARN MONEY FOR BFA--AND IT'S SO EASY!

Did you know you can earn money for BFA each time you shop at King Soopers and Safeway? Buy groceries, gasoline at fuel centers, lottery tickets and postage stamps while helping BFA at the same time! (Safeway gift cards also can be used at Albertson's locations.)

How?
Simply order a dedicated BFA King Soopers and/or Safeway gift card from the BFA Store, and use it to buy your groceries. Then, re-load your King Soopers or Safeway gift card at Customer Service or at the register before you scan your first item.

Online shoppers can use grocery cards too! Shoppers using Safeway's online service can make purchases with their Safeway grocery card, while King Soopers online shoppers can pay using their grocery card when they pick up their order.

Ordering your King Soopers and Safeway cards is easy!
Just go to the BFA Store, click on 'Grocery Cards' and order yours today. The cards are pre-loaded with $5. When ordering, be sure to include your FIRST/LAST NAME and FULL MAILING ADDRESS. Your King Soopers/ Safeway card(s) will be mailed directly to the address provided. Once the order is received, please allow five business days for processing.

Need a new card?
If it's been a while since you used your card, and it's been left with a zero balance, your card will expire! Please order a new card through the store, as the zero balance card will no longer give rebates back to BFA.

The King Soopers and Safeway fundraising programs donate five percent of your purchases back to the school. BFA raised more than $5,500 through this program last year!

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
