 NORTHWESTERN'S KELLOGG DRAWS $15 MILLION GIFT
Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management (
Sally Blount) announced that Madison Industries Founder and CEO Larry Gies and his wife, Beth, contributed $15 million to the graduate business school during fiscal 2017, which ended in August, fueling the graduate school's most successful fundraising year ever.
Kellogg said it raised $75 million, part of its $350 million goal. Northwestern's campus-wide fundraising target is $3.75 billion.
Kellogg Dean Sally Blount has led the Kellogg campaign, which included the opening last year of a striking new 415,000-square-foot global hub on the school's Evanston campus.

TERRA FOUNDATION RE-EMERGES WITH ART + DESIGN CHICAGO EVENT
Art + Design Chicago, developed, guided and primarily funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art (
Elizabeth Glassman), was featured in the
Chicago Tribune.
Art + Design Chicago
aims to bring into sharper focus the contributions to visual culture made in this city in the past 125 years.
It is a first-of-its-kind, $7.9 million effort that will see more than two dozen exhibitions, 100 public programs, more than a dozen digital and media projects and academic programs, and untold paragraphs worth of new writing on the city's visual legacy in venues citywide and into some of the suburbs.

PROPOSED BUDGET
Elaine Maimon, President of Governors State University, was quoted in an article about presidents of the state's nine public universities who wrote a letter openly opposing the budget that the state higher education board presented at its meeting in December.
"I think it's hard for the general public to really understand why it is important to invest in public universities," Elaine Maimon said. "So it was really a sense of mission that we had: In every way that we can, we needed to try to get this message out. It isn't for us; it's for students and it's for the state of Illinois." Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning has published a chapter from
Elaine P. Maimon's book, "Leading Academic Change: Vision, Strategy, and Transformation."
The chapter - "Exploding the Hierarchical Fallacy: The Significance of Foundation-Level Courses" - discussed Elaine's belief that, "one of the most significant challenges in higher education is inadequate attention to first-year courses," and that freshman courses should be considered, "the true foundations for higher-order thinking and learning."

JOYCE AWARDS MARKS 15TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR WITH COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN GREAT LAKES ARTISTS OF COLOR AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
The Joyce Foundation (
Ellen Alberding) announced that the 2018 Joyce Awards have been awarded to four collaborations between artists of color and cultural organizations in Chicago, Detroit, and the Twin Cities.
The 2018 Joyce Awards marks the Joyce Foundation's 15th year for the program. Started in 2003, the Joyce Awards is the only regional program dedicated to supporting artists of color in major Great Lakes cities with the goal of elevating their visibility and recognition in their craft.
"Now in our 15th year of the Joyce Awards, we are honored to support these incredible works that help to strengthen the bonds between artists, organizations, and communities," said Ellen Alberding, President of the Joyce Foundation. "We look forward to the incredible stories they will share and the diverse mediums in which they will present those stories to the world."

(Alexandra Dousmanis-Curtis) with the 2018 Outstanding Corporate Citizen Impact Award in recognition of their community investments and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
