CAROL ROSS BARNEY IS CHICAGO'S NEW "DANIEL BURNHAM"
Carol Ross Barney and her design work throughout the Chicagoland area was featured in Metropolis, which highlighted her as the new "Daniel Burnham." The article notes that Like Burnham, Carol's work has helped bend public policy and regulations to her will. The article notes that this level of civic engagement can create a self-reinforcing feedback loop, as appreciation for her Chicago river design breeds a new awareness among Chicago's citizenry.   Read more...

PHYLLIS LOCKETT: WHAT WOULD DR. KING SAY ABOUT THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN EDUCATION?
Phyllis Lockett, CEO of LEAP Innovations, published a piece in the Huffington Post in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In the article, she shared her opinion on what Dr. King would say about the future of American education and reflected on how LEAP Innovations is impacting the Chicago community.
 
" Dr. King believed in the unlimited possibilities for people of color. If he were here today he would look at the schools failing to prepare black and brown children and ask why we accept it. He would ask us why we don't have an education system that allows each student to reach their full potential, competing equally for the best jobs and opportunities. In his honor, the work continues." K. SUJATA: A DAY ON, NOT A DAY OFF
An article, published in The Huffington Post and written by Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) President and CEO  K. Sujata, honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's legacy and reflected on the progress CFW has made over the years, and the work that still needs to be done in the Chicago community.

" We remain committed to the movements to eradicate racism, poverty and violence. We are all in, and all out, for justice and equity for all women and girls. In the words of Dr. King, ' Justice is indivisible,'" said K. Sujata.

CFW founding member Sunny Fischer , who was recently honored with the  University of Chicago's 2018 Diversity Leadership Award , was also mentioned. Read more...
 
NORTHWESTERN'S KELLOGG DRAWS $15 MILLION GIFT
Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management ( Sally Blount) announced that Madison Industries Founder and CEO Larry Gies and his wife, Beth, contributed $15 million to the graduate business school during fiscal 2017, which ended in August, fueling the graduate school's most successful fundraising year ever.  Kellogg said it raised $75 million, part of its $350 million goal. Northwestern's campus-wide fundraising target is $3.75 billion. 

Kellogg Dean Sally Blount has led the Kellogg campaign, which included the opening last year of a striking new 415,000-square-foot global hub on the school's Evanston campus.  Read more...

TERRA FOUNDATION RE-EMERGES WITH ART + DESIGN CHICAGO EVENT
Art + Design Chicago, developed, guided and primarily funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art ( Elizabeth Glassman), was featured in the Chicago TribuneArt + Design Chicago  aims to bring into sharper focus the contributions to visual culture made in this city in the past 125 years.  It is a first-of-its-kind, $7.9 million effort that will see more than two dozen exhibitions, 100 public programs, more than a dozen digital and media projects and academic programs, and untold paragraphs worth of new writing on the city's visual legacy in venues citywide and into some of the suburbs.  Read more...

ELAINE MAIMON ON ILLINOIS PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION PROPOSED BUDGET
Elaine Maimon, President of Governors State University, was quoted in an article about presidents of the state's nine public universities who wrote a letter openly opposing the budget that the state higher education board presented at its meeting in December. 
 
"I think it's hard for the general public to really understand why it is important to invest in public universities," Elaine Maimon said. "So it was really a sense of mission that we had: In every way that we can, we needed to try to get this message out. It isn't for us; it's for students and it's for the state of Illinois." CHANGE: THE MAGAZINE OF HIGHER LEARNING PUBLISHES CHAPTER FROM ELAINE P. MAIMON'S BOOK
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning has published a chapter from Elaine P. Maimon's book, "Leading Academic Change: Vision, Strategy, and Transformation."  The chapter - "Exploding the Hierarchical Fallacy: The Significance of Foundation-Level Courses" - discussed Elaine's belief that, "one of the most significant challenges in higher education is inadequate attention to first-year courses," and that freshman courses should be considered, "the true foundations for higher-order thinking and learning." JOYCE AWARDS MARKS 15TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR WITH COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN GREAT LAKES ARTISTS OF COLOR AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
The Joyce Foundation ( Ellen Alberdingannounced that the 2018 Joyce Awards have been awarded to four collaborations between artists of color and cultural organizations in Chicago, Detroit, and the Twin Cities.  The 2018 Joyce Awards marks the Joyce Foundation's 15th year for the program. Started in 2003, the Joyce Awards is the only regional program dedicated to supporting artists of color in major Great Lakes cities with the goal of elevating their visibility and recognition in their craft. 

"Now in our 15th year of the Joyce Awards, we are honored to support these incredible works that help to strengthen the bonds between artists, organizations, and communities," said Ellen Alberding, President of the Joyce Foundation. Marilynn Preston wrote a column this week on Creators.com entitled, "Vaccines Are Iffy, so Do 1 More Thing to Resist the Flu," where she explains the importance of a healthy and strong immune system.

Donna Carroll, President, Dominican University, has been recognized by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, the founders of the Dominican University, with their inaugural Cornerstones Award. The annual award henceforth will be given to women who exemplify by their lives and service the qualities of the Order's four founding sisters. Donna will be formally presented with the award at the Sinsinawa Motherhouse in Wisconsin during evening Vespers on Saturday, February 10. Read more...

CHICAGO FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN ANNOUNCES 2018 IMPACT AWARDS HONOREES
Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) ( K. Sujata) is proud to announce the 2018 Impact Awards honoring six local leaders for their exemplary work increasing resources and opportunities for women and girls. The awards will be presented on Wednesday, March 14 at Venue SIX10 at Spertus Institute.
 
CFW will also honor BMO Harris Bank  (Alexandra Dousmanis-Curtis) with the 2018 Outstanding Corporate Citizen Impact Award in recognition of their community investments and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The 2018 awards were selected from among dozens of community nominations by a seven member volunteer committee, including TCN members Sunny Fischer (chair), Anne Ladky, Maria Pesqueira, and Goli Sheikholeslami.
