Call for AdCom Nominations
|
The IEEE EMBS solicits names for candidates for positions on its Administrative Committee (AdCom) for terms of three years. The AdCom is the administrative and governance body of the IEEE EMB Society. It is required to meet two times each year.
Recent changes in the EMBS Bylaws have redefined the categories of AdCom Members: 5 members now represent geographic areas of interest / priority, 5 representatives whose strength lies in key technical areas of EMBS, and 5 members who are active practitioners in the field of biomedical engineering (e.g. clinicians, health policy, medical industry). In addition, 1 student and 1 young professional shall also be sought.
At this time we seek nominations for a total of nine positions that will serve for the terms listed below, beginning 1 January 2019.
Administrative Committee
- Geographic: one representative of North America (3 year term)
- Geographic: one representative of Europe (3 year term)
- Technical: two representatives (3 year terms)
- Practitioner: one representative (3 year term)
- Student: one representative (2 year term)
Nominations of others and self-nominations are permitted. Please submit names, a short biosketch (250 words), a position statement (250 words) and a color picture (headshot) in jpeg format. Please also include a CV (any format) and two names for reference with contact information (name, email and telephone).
The EMBS Nominations Committee is chaired by Past President, Andrew Laine, ( [email protected]).

Call for Contributed Papers and 1 Page Papers
|
C
ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.
At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

Staying in Motion After Stroke
|
A GROWING NUMBER OF TECHNOLOGIES PROVIDE A RANGE OF OPTIONS TO HELP STROKE SURVIVORS GET MOVING AGAIN
|
When a person has a stroke-perhaps a blood clot gets lodged in the brain or a blood vessel near the brain bursts-that person might suddenly not be able to hear, talk, or see. He or she might have trouble walking or may suffer a speech impediment. In fact, one of the greatest challenges of treating patients affected by stroke is that it's a heterogeneous condition, says
Joel Stein
, a physiatrist at Columbia University and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. "It can affect any area of the brain," he says. "There are large and small strokes; there are strokes that bleed into the brain, or block blood vessels, so it's reasonable to believe that the recovery and treatment may not be the same for all these types of strokes."
In the U.S., more than 800,000 people a year have a stroke; in Europe, the figure is close to a million. The costs associated with therapy and loss of productivity for patients after stroke come close to nearly US$34 billion a year, which makes it imperative to find different ways to help patients recover.
Because there are so many different ways that a stroke can happen, there's no one-size-fits all solution to help patients recover. Researchers and engineers are therefore working on several different fronts to develop technologies that could be of assistance, from wearable robotic devices to developing virtual reality modules to help patients relearn movement. At the same time, doctors are also interested in incorporating brain stimulation techniques to enhance other technologies that might help patients recover more quickly from impairment following stroke.

Call for Papers for Early and Advanced Technology Translation, Clinical Trials, Challenges, Reviews, Communications, and Letters
|
JTEHM, an open-access PubMed indexed journal, publishes translational research papers and findings in all stages of technology translation to healthcare and clinical applications, with an emphasis on the expected or demonstrated impact in patient care and medical practice.
JTEHM spans an extended scope--covering early/pre-clinical technology translation research, clinical research and trials, implementation in clinical practice, and public health impact assessment.
JTEHM welcomes submission of manuscripts in the following categories for publication of all types of translational research, challenges, reviews, and communications.
1. Early Translational Research Papers: Primarily focused on technology development, assessment and translation with preliminary assessment involving human subjects or animals to demonstrate potential clinical application and impact.
2. Clinical Trial Papers: Focused on healthcare translation for assessing the technology's efficacy and possible impact on patient care through controlled or randomized trails.
3. Challenge Papers: Presenting technology translation issues, case studies, clinical unmet needs, and challenges in technology translation in community from perspective(s) of stakeholder groups including healthcare providers, industry, regulatory agencies and payors.
4. Translational Research Review Papers: Presenting a review of the current approaches in technology translation and available technologies addressing unmet clinical or healthcare needs.
Communications: Short papers of 1-2 pages maximum on new results in novel technologies in early translational development phase, early clinical implementation and validation, or discussion of emerging challenges and unmet needs.
Letter to Editor: A brief report or commentary that is within the journal's scope and of particular interest to the community, but not suitable as a standard research article.
For any publication category, JTEHM strongly encouraged authors to submit appendix/supplementary material such as videos, data files, models and programs, detailed figures and any additional information that would be posted on the JTEHM website with links to the published paper in IEEE Xplore.
