As you may have heard, I am the new Executive Vice President of the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce and I'm thrilled with my new position. I'll be honest and tell you that it's the GRANDEST title I've ever had -
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
- but even better than the title is the idea of being smack dab in the middle of all that goes into the Hoisington's Labor Day Weekend. I get it, the job is so much more than just the Labor Day weekend but that is the biggest event of the year. And we're on the cusp of planning for it right now. I'm sure I'll probably want a 3 month vacation afterwards but I know I'm going to love every hurdle, every obstacle and everything else to do with it. You see, I've always loved planning a party, a wedding, any type of event really, and it's in the minute details that I find the most pleasure! Ask any who knows me, if I could plan my own funeral reception, I would and the fact that I have to leave it up to someone else, drives me nuts. The only saving grace in this, is knowing, I won't be around to see it!
Let's move on and talk about the HERE and NOW,
February and what is so special about this month. First, it's known as the month that celebrates
Black History Month and was done so by President Gerald R. Ford in 1976. School children all around the country will learn about the achievements and history of African-Americans. And I'm sure USD431 will participate in this process as well.
And then there is the quirky
Ground Hog Day which oddly enough was introduced to the United States by German Settlers in Pennsylvania. So why the Ground Hog, well, the settlers thought they looked an awful lot like a European hedgehog with whom their tradition was based upon in Europe. Every February 2nd, people wait with baited breath to see if "Punxsutawney Phil" will emerge from his home and see his shadow indicating 6 more weeks of winter or will not, with hopes of an early spring. Personally, that groundhog has done me wrong on more than one occasion so I ignore his predictions and just pray winter will pass through quickly.
This month also has a very special date for those of my household and no, I'm not talking about Valentine's Day. The
SUPERBOWL. and yes, it helps, that our beloved New England Patriots (oh, did I mention I'm from Massachusetts) are there again! Yes, I know, most of you don't like the Pats but haters are gonna hate and that's ok because we're still going to ROOT for our home team. And who knows if we'll pull off another victory or not. And if we don't, I'm sure I'll hear about it but until then, WE'RE GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL ---
AGAIN!!!!
Now that I'm done talking smack, I'll move on to the day that made February famous and that is
Valentine's Day - A day to celebrate your loved one. A day for no other reason but to say I love you with flowers or chocolates or a card. A day to take that special person out for a romantic dinner or a special get-away. And just remember, another great way to spoil that special person is by giving them some
Chamber Bucks to use at our local businesses.
And lastly, there is
President's Day in honor of ALL our presidents that began with honoring our first President, George Washington, as his birthday is February 22nd. The 3rd Monday of the month is considered a Federal Holiday so all schools, government offices and banks are closed. And that is why I LOVE this day more than any other in February!
At last it is time for this
Chamber Lady to get back to work but I would like to thank everyone that has made me feel welcomed in this new position. I look forward to getting to know you all better and serving you at the Chamber.
Sincerely,
Karen Baldyga,
The Chamber Lady
aka The Executive Vice President

Cervs
An Icon in the Hoisington Community
This business joined the Hoisington Community in 2009 on the corner of Main & Broadway.
At Cervs, the employees practice what the sign out front says, "Cerv the customers". As you enter the front door you see a smiling familiar face. Long time employees for example the manager, Karla has been employed 18 years as well as Brittney for 15 years and Luke for 10 years.
Cervs is so much more than the normal convenience store, such as their "Punch Cards" whereby you can purchase 6 drinks and get 1 for free. They have snow balls which are very popular during the summer months. For the hungry individual, Lorenzo BBQ serves lunch and dinner every 2 months. You can also save .05 per gallon on gas when paying with cash.
They are very progressive with a complete renovation in 2013 and Plans are already in place for a face-lift out front as well.
The Hoisington Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Cervs for being a member of our community.

Dairy Queen
The Steiners Celebrate 33 years as owners of Dairy Queen
The Hoisington Dairy Queen opened it's doors on June 25, 1953, the windows opened and the customers started flowing in. Carl and Lucile Moller were the original owners of the store when it opened at 301 E. 9th Street before Ike Walter purchased the business in February 1961.
A
s the years progressed remodeling was done, a dining area was added and later the drive thru. Ike had 2 other managers before Leon and Becky Steiner took over the operation on February 4, 1985. Since that time a second dining area was added and in 2001 after the tornado, a new store was opened with a new look and new food items.
Leon and Becky have seen a lot of changes over the last 33 years in the business. Dairy Queen started out as soft serve ice cream served in cones, sundaes, and then there were other items like hamburgers, hot dogs, fish, pork, etc. But over the years many new items have been added, like Orange Julius, Ice Cream Cakes and a variety of hot food items.
There have been many Hoisington students and adults that have worked at Dairy Queen over the years. Leon and Becky plan for Dairy Queen to be around for years to come with their daughter, Amber Crawford, coming on board as a manager, to continue the family tradition.
Dairy Queen is a place to bring your family, grandparents, moms and dads and kids of all ages. If it were not for the good people of Hoisington and the surrounding areas, the Steiners believe their business would not have lasted this long. They would like us to remember, "We treat you right" and we are "Fan Food not Fast Food". "Thanks for the years of support and we look forward to many more years as a Hoisington business".
