Scripture Lessons: Isaiah 40: 21-31
Sermon: Our Collective Amnesia

Larry Lyon will preach at 8:30 and 9:45 in Lingle Chapel and 11 in the sanctuary.

The prophet Isaiah lived a couple of milleniums and a few centuries ago, but his word still bears reading - and more important, actually hearing - in the 21 st Century. "Have you not known? Have you not heard?," are the two questions he asks at the beginning of this week's scripture passage. Chances are we have known and we have heard what Isaiah wants us to known and to hear, and yet, they too often fall by the wayside. We too often live in ways that reveal a lack of trust in a sovereign, loving and gracious God. We tend to trust our own minds and things such as our own bank statements before we trust in a God who is alive, who is still at work in the world, and who only calls us to a life of faith, action and trust.
Isaiah clearly knew well his own particular audience. It is revealing that his words still ring true today. People are people, through the ages. And all of us would do well to put the pause button on our busy lives and hear again the comforting and encouraging words Isaiah proclaims.

The Junior Choir will sing Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet at the 11:00 service.

The Chancel Choir will sing Thou Knowest, Lord, the Secrets of Our Hearts at the 11:00 service.

The Sacrament of the Lord's supper will be served at all 3 services.

Professor of Sociology Matt Samson will present a four-week class on "Creation, Cosmology, and Climate Justice: A view from the Global South." This unit places the idea of "integral ecology" from Pope Francis's encyclical Laudata Si': On Care for Our Common Home in conversation with recent Reformed ideas on the doctrine of creation. Climate justice is then considered from the perspective of activist movements in the Global South (primarily Latin America) that challenge the unjust distribution of the costs of extractive economic activities such as mining and plantation agriculture. Case studies from the Presbyterian Hunger Program of the PCUSA in Peru and Bolivia will be used to facilitate our discussion.
