Regional Leadership Collaborative: Workforce Transportation

12:30 pm - 6:00 pm at the Federal Reserve Bank, Baltimore

Develope d by Leadership Howard County, the GBC LEADERship, Leadership Anne Arundel, and Leadership Baltimore County, in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond - Baltimore Branch, this interactive learning symposium is meant to develop a deeper understanding of workforce transportation issues across the region.
This symposium is a must for alumni who work in transportation, workforce development,
planning and/or logistics; alumni who love to examine macro level challenges; and alumni  who want to be part of developing innovative solutions to community / regional challenges.
This event is free but limited to active members of the four Leadership programs. Registration required and limited to first come first served.

At our Annual Awards Dinner and Graduation on June 12, Leadership Howard County will honor individuals for outstanding dedication and commitment to serving our community. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Leadership Awards in these categories:

Leadership Premier
"Conducting Business" was the focus of the January session for the current Premier class. Topics included overviews of the business climate in Howard County, updates from EDA and
Class members learned about autonomous vehicle technology at Steer Technology
Downtown Columbia, and hot topics ranging from innovation and cyber, to sexual harassment in the workplace. The class hit the road and visited a variety of businesses, and returned to compare notes.

This Just In: Emergency Preparation and Recovery
Members attended an informative session on January 26 that provided valuable lessons learned from the Ellicott City flood in 2016. Experts who had helped businesses in Ellicott City recover shared tips and strategies to help others prepare for future emergencies and to
safeguard their businesses from disaster.
Special thanks to Ryan Miller (LP 2014), Director of the Howard County Office of Emergency Management, and Larry Twele (LP 2013), CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority, who organized and moderated the panel; and to the Jeffrey Group at Morgan Stanley for their sponsorship.

LHC 2017 classmates Donald M. Barrick and Tracy Miller were elected to the Board of Directors of the Howard County Autism Society in December 2017. Don is a Business /Commercial Real Estate Broker with The BAF Group LLC and Tracy is an attorney with her firm Tracy Miller Law, LLC.   
 
Mike Fowler (LP 2004) will be the new legislative liaison to the Maryland General Assembly for Carroll County government. Mike spent more than 40 years with BGE in a variety of capacities, including 14 years as manager of external affairs.

Chris Maynard (LP 2011) has been named Director of Individual and Foundation Relations at the Maryland Food Bank.
 
Krysta Huxford (LP 2005) recently opened her own Pilates studio in Glenwood. Practical Pilates, LLC offers private and group Pilates classes. 
 
Joshua Moody (LP 2014) has joined Howard Tech Advisors as a Technical Account Manager.

Excite Columbia educates and informs residents with an in-depth view of how CA operates and serves the community through its many departments and programs. The citizens academy also provides a forum for CA and community members to interact and engage with one another - and an informal setting to talk about your vision for the future of Columbia.

Apply to Be a Book in The Human Library
The Human Library™ is an international initiative presented by Choose Civility, designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. Just like in the regular library, a visitor to the Human Library can choose a Book from a range of titles - except in the Human Library, Books are people, and the Reading is a conversation. It is an event where real people (Books) of different backgrounds, experiences, and identities go on loan to Readers for an honest and respectful conversation.
The event takes place on Saturday, March 17 at the HCLS Miller Branch in Ellicott City, from 1 - 5 pm.

Considering Running for the Columbia Association Board of Directors?
Potential candidates for Columbia Association (CA) board are encouraged to attend an information session in February to learn more about CA, the role of its board members and how service on the board impacts the community.

The sessions will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 pm and Saturday, Feb. 24 at 10 am, both at CA Headquarters, 6310 Hillside Court.
CA's Board of Directors has 11 members - one representative from each of Columbia's 10 villages plus CA's President/CEO. 
In late April 2018, six villages will hold elections for their representative to the CA Board of Directors: Harper's Choice, Hickory Ridge, Oakland Mills, Owen Brown, Town Center and Wilde Lake.

HCPSS Seeks Citizen Member For Ethics Policy Development/Revision Committee
The Howard County Public School System is currently seeking general citizen candidates for membership on the Policy 2070 Ethics Development/Revision Committee. Committee members take an active role in developing and revising the policy. Their knowledge, experience and perspective improve the policy review process and ensure transparency at every stage of the committee's work.
