A Message From Our Pastor
Dear St. Luke Saints,

February at St. Luke offers us opportunities to grow and mature in our faith. We will have an in-depth discussion on Race, begin the Transformational Ministry process and start our Lenten journey.

What is this thing called race? Race -- The Power of an Illusion is based on a provocative three-hour video series that questions the very idea of race as biology. If race is a biological myth, where did the idea come from? Are we open to challenge many long and deeply held assumptions? Is it safe to talk about race? Can we end racism? Join us as we, a people of faith, examine these important questions in our society.

All are invited to attend this seminar. We will meet at St. Luke on Saturday, February 10, start at 9am and end by 4pm. Lunch will be provided for all in attendance.  Cathy Crimi and I will be the presenters and facilitate the discussions. Please join us and invite a friend to attend.

Transformational Ministry is a program designed by the ELCA and Southeastern Synod to lead Lutheran congregations to growth and vitality. St. Luke is a healthy congregation, but we are not all that God is calling us to be. We have lost some of the vitality of a new congregation. We risk becoming disconnected from the communities around us. In February we begin a two year process of discernment. We will be asking you for guidance, ideas and prayers as begin this process. Our first team meeting will be held on Saturday, February 3, 8am - 4pm. We will join with Living Word, Epiphany and Peace Lutheran churches in this discussion. The St. Luke Church Council has designated resources for this process. Our congregation voted at our last congregational meeting to engage in this process. Your participation will be needed in the coming months.

The season of Epiphany is quickly coming to an end. Ash Wednesday will soon be upon us. This year Ash Wednesday falls on February 14. What a cruel joke to have Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day on the same day. Chocolates and Ashes do not go together. Maybe this can be reminder that death and love are both part of our lives. We need to pause and acknowledge both. Both are part of who we are as humans. A life is not fully lived without love, as we consider our death, let us recommit to love God, love ourselves and love our neighbor.

Our Lenten devotional books are available in the narthex.  "LIVING WELL through Lent 2018 --Loving With All Your Heart, Soul, Strength and Mind" includes daily readings and journal entries. Lent is a time for introspection and self- reflection, a time to reflect on the core of what it means to live a Christian life. For people of faith, love is not an abstract or feel-good concept, but an urgent call to radically incarnate love in how we relate to God, our neighbor and ourselves. Please join in the study and reflection this season of lent.  A small group leader's guide is available for Lenten small groups using this resource.

As we continue the journey before us, consider this prayer by Chaplain Mychal Judge who died on 9/11/2011,

Lord, take me where You want me to go,
Let me meet who You want me to meet,
Tell me what You want me to say,
And, keep me out of Your way.

In Christ,
A Message From Our Council President

Dear St. Luke Saints,

I hope this finds everyone enjoying a peaceful start to 2018. This promises to be an eventful year for St. Luke and Memphis as we commemorate the 50 th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination at the Lorraine Motel while fighting for equality for all people. It is a struggle that we unfortunately still find with us today. One of the first events that we have an opportunity to participate in is on Feb 10. St Luke will host the Illusion of Race Workshop. Pastor Cliff and Cathi Crimi, the chairperson of the Southeastern Synod Anti-Racism Task Force, will lead the video presentations and discussion addressing questions concerning what is "Race".

I am not sure where the workshop will be held, but if it is in the CFC, we know everyone will be warm. We thank Bill Frye for once again ensuring that our largest financial asset remains in excellent condition. Bill led the process to replace the heating/cooling unit in CFC in January. As always, we thank Bill for his love of St. Luke and the passion he has for the Property Ministry.

Likewise, the Saints will be cozy as we enjoy our first Fellowship event of the year as we enjoy pizza and the movie "War Room" by the Kendrick brothers. This will be an adult-only, BYOB event. I suggest that you also bring a box of tissues as this movie will evoke the full range of emotions. I encourage everyone to attend and enjoy the evening with your Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

For the next two years we will embark on a journey with our fellow Memphis ELCA churches termed Transformation Ministry 2.0, or T2 for short. Led by our Synod, this promises to be a deep dive into everything that we are and are not as a Christian community. It is our hope that this two-year long process will further align us with God's will for us to reach beyond ourselves to those searching for the love and peace that only Jesus Christ can offer us. We all know that this is alive and well at St. Luke and we will be learning new and exciting ways to share Him with those beyond our walls.

Our Family Promise guests will be staying at St. Luke from Sunday, February 11 through Sunday, February 18. This is an opportunity for us to be part of the solution to end the chronic problem of homelessness in our city. Please join your fellow Saints as we show Christ's love to our guests by serving during this week. No one should be without the basic needs of food and shelter and we have the chance to help our families obtain these as they transition into permanent housing.

I am excited to serve as your council president. I pray that the Lord leads all of us to a deeper relationship with Him by loving, serving and worshiping Him at St. Luke.
                                        Peace,
                                        Jim Allay

ELCA News

From the ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ

Greetings in the name of Christ!
When we began our work in 2012, we were charged to foster church dialogue around issues of sexism. We had no idea those issues would be dominating the headlines when we scheduled the publication of the "Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice" for 2018! We invite you to join this timely conversation about the draft because we need the voices of everyone from across our church.

How can you join the conversation?
You can read the draft and respond. Just as talking together has helped our task force to think about these issues, we encourage you to get together with a group. You also may choose to attend a hearing in your synod.
Click here to learn more about all of these options. The comment period is open through Sept. 30, 2018

What will you find in the draft?
Among many important theological themes, the draft stands upon the Lutheran emphasis that we are justified by grace through faith. It explores how this marvelous gift urges, even empowers, us to challenge the structures of patriarchy and sexism because they prevent all people from living the abundant lives God intends.

Some of the issues the draft explores include:
  • how Lutherans understand Scripture;
  • restricted access to health care and economic resources;
  • objectifying portrayals of women and girls in the media and popular culture; and
  • gender-based violence.
It has been an immensely humbling and gratifying experience to be part of the Task Force on Women and Justice. We invite you to the table as the Spirit moves you. We invite you to be a part of advancing this social statement process and to contribute to what will be a living guide for our church.

Yours in Christ,

The Rev. Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld
Intentional Interim Pastor, Wisconsin
Professor Brad Wendel
Cornell University School of Law

The SEASON of LENT
February 14 - March 31
Lenten Devotional Study
Our Lenten Devotionals are available for you in the narthex.
"Living Well Through Lent 2018: Loving With All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind."  This year the devotional is designed for individual or small group use.   The study provides a foundation for seeking a deeper experience of love for lent,  an experience that will help us prepare for the true meaning of Easter.

We are asking all St. Luke Saints to take on a lenten discipline of daily prayer and devotion.   This five week devotional will take you from Ash  Wednesday, February 14  through  Easter  Sunday, April 1 . Join the path to spiritual growth, pick up a lenten devotional,  and schedule devotional time each day in the season of lent.

Small Groups Forming Now
If you are interested in participating in or leading a small group, please contact Jennifer Wright ([email protected]). Groups can meet in homes around the area or at church. Once you are placed in a group, the group can decide when and where you will meet.

Sunday School
We'll use Heifer International materials during Sunday school.

Lenten Offerings
Join St. Luke this Lenten season as we collect money to help end hunger and poverty by participating in a four week daily missions giving program through Heifer International. The story of Noah's Ark and God's rainbow with its promise of a new day of dignity and productivity has never been more relevant. Through this program, we have the opportunity to offer a new and healthy life filled with anticipation and fruitfulness to a few of the world's "least of these". The money raised from our offerings will be split between Heifer International and the St. Luke Food Pantry. Fill the Ark giving banks will be handed out on Sunday, February 4th. Fill the banks with loose change, and bring in your offering each week. Help St. Luke buy food for local families in need or buy a cow, pig or some chicks to end hunger for a family in need in another part of the world.

One person, one family, one congregation is all it takes to Fill the Ark and make a difference in today's world!

Offerings collected during Mid-Week Lenten Services will be divided between Heifer International and the St. Luke Food Pantry.

This Lenten season consider collecting all your pocket coins, or omitting a restaurant meal, and giving the money you saved. Be creative,  you may even want to try fasting for a mid day meal.

Installation of Pr. Tonie Robinson, Peace Lutheran Church
Join us for Pastor Tonie's installation as
Pastor at Peace Lutheran Church,
1548 Jackson Ave., Memphis TN
on Sunday, Feb. 25, 3pm

What a concert! Wish we had all been there!
I was blessed to see the  CHILDREN OF THE WORLD CHOIR representing some of the counties of the Middle East.  They did dance routines with every song they sang. WOW!  Workout X 3.  It puts my exercise (Chair Aerobics for Seniors)  group to shame. Each Child gave a brief talk about their lives and the situations under which they lived as small children. Many were true orphans, and some were placed as wards of the State into Foster care simply because parents could not financially care for them. Now,  they testify that they LOVE JESUS! Sounds like my story so I could relate very well! SAD, GLAD and THANKFUL!   God surely puts us where He wants us to be!
Thanks Be To God for ministries that address the needs of children!
Love Ya',

 Lutheran History

First African American Lutheran Pastor

Jehu Jones, Jr., was a black slave and minister born in Charleston, SC. He was named after his father, Jehu Sr., a tailor who gained his freedom in 1798 and later became a businessman, opening an exclusive hotel in Charleston.

Jones, became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Charleston in the 1820s. He was ordained twelve years later, in 1832. He later became a missionary to Liberia to accompany freed slaves to Africa. He returned to Charleston after his ordination and was jailed briefly for violating South Carolina's law prohibiting the immigration of free blacks.
He settled in Philadelphia, which was the largest city in the country at the time. In June 1833, the Pennsylvania Ministry determined that Jones should be appointed to labor as a Missionary among the colored people in Philadelphia under their direction.
The St. Paul congregation that Jones founded in Philadelphia decided to build a church and solicit support from other Lutheran congregations. Throughout Jones' life in
Philadelphia, he was active in the social and political life of the city. He organized a convention at Temperance Hall with the intent of uniting free blacks to petition local au thorities for civil rights in 1845. He was also active in the Moral Reform and Improvement society, an association of black churches in the city dedicated to improving the social conditions of blacks. Jehu Jones died in 1852.

Create A Lasting Legacy - Remember St. Luke  in your Will.

OVER 70-1/2?
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD's) have been permanently extended to individuals 70-1/2 and over. These are direct contributions from a qualified IRA (traditional or Roth) to a qualified charity (St. Luke). They do not first go to the owner of the IRA, but instead go directly to the charity from the IRA trustee or custodian. So what are the advantages?
QCDs are included in meeting the test of Required Minimum Distributions (RMD's) from your IRA upon reaching 70-1/2 years of age;
deductibility limits do not apply to QCDs up to a maximum of $100,000;
If you do not itemize you could possibly still get a tax deduction for charitable contributions through lower income assuming that you would otherwise withdraw your charitable contribution from your IRA;
If you pay taxes on a portion of your Social Security, QCDs may reduce reported income below the RMD. This may also help in cases where you are subject to tax on Net Investment Income, or phase-out of personal exemptions or itemized deductions.
If you feel that this is something that would be of advantage to you, talk to your tax advisor. QCD's only became permanent this year so a lot of folks are not familiar with the new law.

Where did the time go?!  Before you know it, we'll all be giving up chocolate for Lent! Sigh...

Many thanks to all the elves who decorated and undecorated St. Luke for the wonderful Christmas season!  It's hard work and everyone did the huge job with smiles and energy.

We had a great musical season:  Heather Lange and Kara Lange shared their talents with us, playing "Give Thanks For A Grateful Heart" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," with Heather on piano and vocal and Kara on the viola.  Then we had the Cherub Choir at two services, singing "Light of the World" and "One Holy Night."  Sydney Chase, Megan Mathers, and Britta Hall did a viola trio with "Christmas Medley."  Marcin Arendt and Nancy Graham performed "Pei il Santissimo Natale" and "Welcome Thou King of Glory" on our third Sunday in Advent.   Karen McCracken sang "Mary, Did You Know?" on Christmas Eve and June Morgan sang the prelude "The Spirit Song" on MLK Sunday.  Traveler Mikah Meyer sang for us on his way around the country, visiting National Parks, in honor of his late father.  What a season of joy and talent!  Many thanks, everyone - performers and directors alike!

Guess what?!   St. Nicholas made an appearance at St. Luke! And he brought three sisters from Myra with him!  The Confirmation Youth were celebrating his name, and he actually came into the sanctuary to tell us about himself.  It was a wonderful (and I really mean, "wonder-full") evening.  Blessings to our youth for their hard work and talent!

Jan 28th Sermon "Cliff" Notes
Mark's Gospel: Jesus was the real deal! His fame spread quickly because He spoke, healed, and walked with authority. Words and Actions! They were consistent and people were astounded at them. (Even unclean spirits obeyed Him!) Ok; so whose authority are we to submit to? To the One who not only healed, He restored the sick, the ailing. Will we allow God to have access to our needs and limitations? We, ourselves, are a false authority; can we change directions and follow Him? God does not demand that we do, He offers it to us. Repentance --- forgiveness --- salvation. He uses our weakness to fill us with His authority. Let's change directions and follow Him!

Let's give a shout out to Maggie Carkeet, Madeline and Luke Wright, who sang (and played) "King of My Heart" so beautifully as our offering hymn.  Many thanks for sharing your gifts with us!
