IN THE NEWS: FHS's Forbes named McDonald's All-Star
Folsom High senior and girls basketball standout  McKenzie Forbes had a big day on Wednesday Jan. 24 when she was presented with her jersey for the upcoming McDonald's All-American Game.

Forbes is the second Folsom High hoops player (boys' or girls' team) to earn this honor, the first was Jenn Hall, in 2003.

Not only is Forbes on the McDonald's All-American Team, but she was accepted to attend UC Berkeley in the Fall. Local and national news outlets covered Forbes' big day. Click on the following links to view media coverage USA Today, ABC10, and The Folsom Telegraph.

Mills student wins VFW essay contest, heads to nationals
Sophia Trujillo, a 7th grader at Mills Middle School in Rancho Cordova, was recognized Jan. 19 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars California Department for winning first place in the 2017-2018 Patriot's Pen Essay contest. 

Trujillo earned the top spot for her essay on this year's essay contest themed, "America's Gift to my Generation" out of 1,700 entries submitted. 

As the department's winner Trujillo was presented a Patriot's Pen Trophy, $1,000 scholarship and read her essay out loud to the audience at the department's mid-winter conference dinner. In addition she was honored earlier in the week by VFW Post 10125 and received a Certificate of Merit, a Patriot Pen Medal and a $100 scholarship. 

Trujillo's essay has been entered in the VFW's national competition, where she will compete with other students across the nation for a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. 
VIDEO: Natoma Station Elementary helps refugee student community at Cordova Meadows
The student council at Natoma Station Elementary organized a Warm and Fuzzy drive with a non-profit organization Without a Roof, to help the refugee student community at Cordova Meadows Elementary.

Natoma Station Elementary collected over 500 items including coats, scarves gloves, hats, shirts, pants, pajamas, socks, shoes and blankets to share with the over ninety refugee students and their families at Cordova Meadows Elementary.

Education Town Hall happening this weekend, please join us!
Folsom Cordova is hosting an Education Town Hall during its next "Parent Summit" on Sat. Feb. 3, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
 
Families, teachers, students and community members are invited to our interactive Education Town Hall. We want your feedback that will help us best plan the services programs and support all students need to succeed! 
 
The event is being held at Rancho Cordova Elementary located at 2562 Chassella Way in Rancho Cordova. 
 
On-site childcare is available, as well as translation services in Spanish, Russian, Farsi, and Dari/ Pashto. Free transportation services from Cordova Meadows Elementary and Mills Middle School are available to and from the event. Pick-up time is 8 a.m. and drop- off time is 11:45 a.m. 
VIDEO: Bulldogs alum Jordan Richards is playing in the Superbowl
Folsom High School Bulldogs alum Jordan Richards has a chance to win his second Super Bowl ring this weekend.

Richards, #37 plays defensive back for the New England Patriots who are playing in the Super Bowl LII against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday 2/4 at 3:30 p.m. PST on NBC.

Richards was on the Bulldogs football team when they won the CA State Championship, in 2010. He was the team captain his senior year at FHS and graduated from there in 2011. He went on to receive a scholarship to Stanford University where he played football from 2011 to 2014. Richards served as team captain his senior year at Stanford and graduated with a degree in Public Policy.

In 2017 the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34 to 28, earning Richard's his first ring.

20 Folsom Cordova teachers get free classroom supplies
"Helping Teachers Helping Students" was formed this year as a way to provide a mid-year gift of free classroom supplies to Sacramento County teachers.
 
Businesses such as Intel, Aerojet Rocketdyne, SAFE Credit Union, SMUD, and nonprofits such as Sac Metro Chamber Foundation and Rotary Clubs, worked with area school districts in this effort.
 
Over 800 teachers applied for a free kit valued at $100 each, through their website. 1 00 teachers were randomly selected and 20 were from FCUSD! These happy teachers picked up their free kits last week.

U.S. Navy Band tour coming to Cordova High next month
America's U.S. Navy Band is coming to Rancho Cordova, one of 21 cities in 12 states to host a performance in their 2018 tour.
 
The United States Navy Concert Band performance is scheduled for Feb. 22, 2018, 7 p.m. at Cordova High in the large gym. Cordova High is located at 2239 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova.
 
The Navy Concert Band, the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy, presents a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for 90 years.

2 018 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest open to high school students 
 
An essay and video contest for high school students in the western United States and Pacific Islands is accepting entries starting 2/1.

The contest is sponsored by the U.S. Federal Courts for the Ninth Circuit. 

This year's essay and video theme is, "The 14th Amendment, 150 Years after Ratification. What does Equal Protection Mean to Students?"

A total of $7,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. The top three finishers in both the essay and video with receive $2,000 for 1st place, $1,000 for 2nd pace and $500 for 3rd place. First place winners along with their parent or guardian will be invited to the 2018 Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference in Anaheim, CA. The deadline to enter is 4/1.

Enter the Sacramento County Office of Education Essay Scholarship Contest

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is now accepting submissions from local high school students for an essay contest to honor local military veterans. 

The winning high school student will receive a $500 scholarship, courtesy of Safe Credit Union. 

This year's essay contest theme is " How a Veteran's Courage Contributes to my Freedom." Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors who currently attend high school in Sacramento County. The completed essay must be 400 to 500 words typed, along with a cover letter, must be received by April 17, 2018. 

The winning applicant must attend the board meeting on  May 15 at 6:30 p.m. to read their essay and receive the scholarship.
