School week #1 for 2018 is already in the books and I am pleased to share with the community that the New Year opened with a fast start. Our regular readers know that we report statistics on important leading indicators of student success each week (table at bottom). As for this past week, LNMS enjoyed superior attendance rates across all grade levels, the number of students reading for pleasure jumped, and student tardies to class fell to a level not seen since prior to Thanksgiving -  all positive signs early in the year.

Monday is a federal and school holiday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is credited with this remark, " Life's most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?" This calls attention to our PTSA as they consistently step forward volunteering to assist our students and faculty.

As I have written here in the past, LNMS is fortunate to have such a dynamic PTSA. Next Friday, January 19th they will help once again by hosting our Winter Dance and I know the students are really looking forward to the event. If you still have not gotten your PTSA membership, please do so here in the New Year. This is a wonderful organization that does so much for our students and teachers. If you have not yet joined, your membership support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus Tuesday, January 16th after the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and Monday's holiday.

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

SSYRA Book Review of the Week: (Review by Goodreads.com)
The Nerdy Dozen by Jeff Miller

When Neil Andertol and eleven other video-gaming whizzes download classified military training software, they are recruited by the Air Force to complete a mission gone wrong. Suddenly the nerdy dozen aren't playing for points-they're playing to save the world!

Neil Andertol is a hero.

. . . Just not in real life. He's always left the princess freeing, monster fighting, and village saving up to the characters he plays online, under the name ManofNeil. In his favorite flying game, Chameleon, he pilots a super-stealth fighter jet-that can supposedly go invisible at the highest level. Yet while ManofNeil can take out a whole squadron of enemy planes, regular Neil still gets picked on by the class bully. But that's all about to change.

The Lake Nona Community Lends a Helping Hand . . .
Our school community stepped forward to help those in need during the 2017-2018 holiday season. Thank you!

One of the most satisfying, fun, and productive ways to unite a community is through caring and aiding each other. We here at Lake Nona Middle School believe that we are here to create and ensure a welcoming culture and environment for all families, children and youth, school staff, and community members.

This holiday season Lake Nona Middle School along with our community family, including Lach Orthodontics, Hope Presbyterian Church, and Lake Nona parent/community leaders, were able to assist a family with over $1,000 in cash, gift cards, and food along with with dental care valued in excess of $6,000 for two children.

The Lake Nona community family was also able to help a fellow Knight from Puerto Rico furnish her home and provide her with essentials to assist her and her family's transition here from the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

Our middle school and the Lake Nona community are indeed fortunate to have quality organizations such as these that actively pitch in to assist those in need throughout the year.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
American Baptist Minister and Civil Rights Leader

November 8, 1964 Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. smiles with parishioners on the day it is announced that he has won the Nobel Prize for Peace. He was only 35 years old at the time.

In its January 1964 issue, TIME named Martin Luther King, Jr., ''Man of the Year'' for 1963, making the civil rights leader the first African-American recipient of this honor.
