GGUSD Homegrown Spotlight

Robert Salazar is GGUSD Homegrown. Robert is the Building Operations Supervisor at the District Office. He attended Excelsior Elementary, Jordan Intermediate, and graduated from Bolsa Grande High School in 2002.

“As a child attending GGUSD schools, I remember thinking and seeing how happy the employees were. In high school, my science teacher Terri Shook, really helped me grow by believing in me. As a student, Terri would challenge me to reach my potential. Terri taught me important skills like organization, communication, and professionalism. She became my role model and someone I looked up to. She helped me pursue my goals and wrote me a letter of recommendation when I first began applying for jobs. She made a difference for me. When I got a job at GGUSD, it felt like I was home.”

Irvine Intermediate School eighth grader Genevie Nguyen earned the title of champion of the district’s 31 st Annual Spelling Bee for seventh and eighth grade students. The event was held January 17 and included the top four spellers from each of the district’s ten intermediate schools. Genevie, who also won last year’s Spelling Bee as a seventh grader, correctly spelled the deciding word, ocelot, becoming the top speller among more than 7,500 intermediate school students in GGUSD. English Language Arts teachers Sharelene Tartaglini and Barrilyn Kaa served as coaches for the four Spelling Bee contestants from Irvine Intermediate School.

Family Game Night

Allen Elementary School hosted a Family Game Night recently where their school community came together for a good, old-fashion evening of board games and several rounds of giant Jenga. We love our GGUSD families.  #GGUSDPride
Product Design at Pacifica

Pacifica High School teacher Mr. Davis helps students in the CTE (Career and Technical Education) Product Design course use 3D and CAD software programs to sketch their products. Students learn how to think like a product designer and use computer-aided drafting, modeling, wood materials, and 3D printing during the product design process.
Dolphins Donate to Disaster Relief

Brookhurst Elementary School presented a "giant check" to the American Red Cross at a school-wide assembly last week. Students raised $450 toward disaster relief efforts.
Cavaliers Celebrate Gym Re-Opening

On January 12, Santiago High School hosted an event to celebrate the re-opening of the school’s gymnasium. The gym was closed for upgrades and received a new floor and bleachers with help from Measure P, the district’s $311 million bond measure overwhelmingly approved by the community in November. As part of the
re-opening, Santiago students and alumni honored a former beloved teacher on the renovated Ron Heusser Memorial Court. Ron taught at Santiago for 47 years. After the ceremony, students on the boys and girls basketball teams hit the new hardwood court for two exciting basketball games. Thanks to Board of Education Trustee Walter Muneton, Congressman Lou Correa, and Garden Grove City Councilmember and Santiago graduate Kim Nguyen for joining in on the celebration.
