Christmas Tree Recycling -  Westland residents can drop off their Christmas tree at the Recycling Center at the DPS building located at 37137 Marquette during regular operating hours Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. -5 p.m., January 8 through January 19. Trees should be free of decorations. As part of the city's Mission:Green Initiative, all trees received will be chipped and recycled for use at the City of Westland Community Garden and other locations. You can also put your Christmas trees on the curb the day of your trash pick-up January 4 through January 15, but trees taken to the curb will not be recycled. Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:

Library Board
  • The Westland Library Board will meet on Wednesday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the William P. Faust Westland Public Library, located at 6123 Central City Parkway

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration -  Huel Perkins, lead anchor at Fox 2 News Detroit, will deliver the  Keynote Address at the City of Westland's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony on Monday, January 15.   Participants are asked to gather at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd. beginning at 8:30 a.m.   From there, participants will be shuttled to the Westland Public Library for the Freedom Walk, which will begin at 9 a.m.  The Freedom Walk will symbolize all of those who marched with Dr. King over 50 years ago.  The short walk will end at Westland City Hall.  City Hall doors will open beginning at 8:00 am. The  ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. will include uplifting messages from Mayor Wild and other state and local elected officials.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Westland Police Community Partnership Committee.

City Offices Closed in Observance of MLK Day - On Monday, January 15 all City Offices will be closed in observance of MLK Day.  This includes the 18th District Court and the Westland Public Library.  Trash and recycling pick up will not be affected by the closure.

The City is served by two public school districts; Wayne-Westland Community Schools serving 12,000 youth was recently named one of the Best School in Michigan by WXYZ-TV and is the proud recipient of 14 Golden Apple and two Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.  Livonia Public Schools, educating nearly 15,000 students, is proud of their MEAP/MME scores that exceed state averages and the District has also earned Golden Apple and Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.
