OfficersbLogWFPC Officers' Column
Shane Claiborne, co-author of "Red Letter Revolution" states "It seems as though whether it's a little tiny congregation or a huge one, if you only are existing for the sake of yourselves, you implode. We have to exist for Jesus' vision of the kingdom of God, for the mission outside the church. If we don't, then our churches become unhealthy and die."

Similarly, John Ortberg in his book "The Life You've Always Wanted" reminds us that Christ came not to be served but to serve.  He also states "When Jesus came in the form of a servant, he was not disguising who God is. He was revealing who God is." His Disciples were mentored in this servanthood, and at Christ's death, they did exactly that. Instead of focusing on their own faith group, they ventured out to serve the world and spread the Good News and serve others.

"The primary reason Jesus calls us to servanthood is not just because other people need our services. It is because of what happens to us when we serve. It's not that we, the church, are strong and they need our help, it is because if we don't we will end up as a hopeless relic."

We are a society of sinners just trying to help other sinners. Servanthood is our calling.

Mondays, beginning January 22, 10 AM to noon in the Youth Room
Our mission is to encourage, educate, and empower those who are caring for loved ones with dementia. We seek to be a place where real issues are shared, where burdens are lightened and joys are magnified, and where we all learn how to enhance the personhood of the one with the disease. A more gentle journey for the whole family is our goal. Sample topics: Setting Your Attitude for the Journey, Managing Stress in the Caregiver Season, How to Set Up Your House, How Counseling Helps, Where is God in This?, Mantras That Help, Anticipatory Grief, The Power of Forgiveness, The Power of Thankfulness, Magnifying the Good Moments. prayingPraying in the Messiness of Life
Wednesdays, beginning January 17, from 6:30 - 7:30 in CLC B104
Come join us as we explore different types of prayer as a practice and a respite in the midst of the messiness of life and living. ALL ARE WELCOME... this isn't a parent-only class!! To give you a taste of what is to come in the spring, enjoy this excerpt from the book "Praying In The Messiness of Life" by Linda Douty (our book of focus this semester!):
"We tend to confuse God with Santa Claus. We think that prayer means providing a list of things we want and hoping we have been good enough girls and boys to deserve them. When our prayers are not "answered", we wonder what went wrong..."
This book is an invitation to renew our relationship with God by expanding our prayer experience to include silence as the language of God. We will explore ways to connect with the divine when life has us on the go. We continue to turn to our traditional pillars of prayer...We count on these foundational ways of praying for ongoing support and sustenance. But the power of prayer spills over the edges of those boxes too.

questionJesus Is the Question
Wednesdays, beginning January 17, from 6:30 - 7:30 in Blue Mod Room 1
Jesus is the living Word of God. So, what does he have to say to us? Pastor Rebekah will lead this Bible study, guided by the book by Martin Copenhaver, "Jesus Is the Question." We've all heard the expression, "Jesus is the answer," but most of the time Jesus would answer a question with another question, challenging us to engage in a relationship with Him that can be truly transformational.

Thank you, Sharon, for the passion and energy and love you have poured into this ministry. Thanks, also, to everyone who helped make our last week's hosting of Family Promise families such a success. We couldn't have done it without you!

A Healthier and Happier 2018
More tips for taking small steps to make this your healthiest and happiest year. (Continued from 1/12/18.)
  1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Cook more meals at home and use fresh, whole ingredients. This also decreases sodium and sugar intake and calories. While drinking fruit juices and eating dried fruit is another way to increase fruit intake, these options are much higher in sugar content than fresh fruit.
  2. Get vaccinated. In particular, get the flu vaccine right now if you haven't done so yet this season. The flu virus is particularly virulent this year, already linked to 26 deaths in NC since October 1, 2017, compared to 11 flu-associated deaths for the same time period last year. Click on https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/vaccines-age.html for the CDC vaccine recommendations by age group.
