Thank You from FTR Founder,
Ian Acker

I'd like to take a minute to thank the hundreds of people who have helped FTR ring in our 4th year. To our dedicated board of directors who made FTR possible; to our amazing staff who show up every day to help every person feel the hope and possibilities of recovery; to our 150 members who demonstrate to each other and to newcomers the importance of community; to our 12 treatment centers who understand the critical need for a safe and supportive place for their post-treatment clients; to our generous individual donors who have seen the impact FTR has had on their loved ones; and to our foundation and corporate partners who understand and have invested in the healing powers of this unique place.
These include Zions Bank, Sorenson Legacy Foundation, Episcopal Diocese of Utah, Intermountain Healthcare, Lawrence T. and Janet T. Dee Foundation, the LDS Foundation, Utah Medical Foundation, the George S. and Dolores D. Eccles Foundation, the John Parrish Foundation and the Macomber Family Foundation. As we enter our 4th year of service, thank you for helping FTR exercise recovery. ~ Ian Acker, Founder, Executive Director

Creative Expression: New Year, New Classes!

"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."

-- Albert Einstein

At FTR, we grow strong on the outside and on the inside. Yes, we are a gym, but we also offer classes in Creative Expression. The same spirit which empowers our bodies in the gym can carry us to try new things, and to explore our inner selves. Many FTR members have been inspired using the artistic tools of writing and painting. Our beautiful  kitchen blazes with the warmth of imagination and creativity!

Open Studio is free for members and $5 for guests or community members. Every Sunday from 2-4 p.m., interested individuals are welcome to come work on their own projects with the support of a trained art educator and your fellow FTR artists.

Week 1: Knife Skills and Recipe Reading
Week 2: How to Combine Flavors and Foods
Week 3: Basics of Baking
Week 4: Sauces and Sautéing

Service:  Spirit of Christmas Outreach

On Christmas morning, FTR members followed Rachel Santizo into the cold. They brought coats, tarps, warm food, haircuts and friendship to those without a home. Thank you Rachel, for leading us into unseen spaces and for showing us the real people who live there.

"What I feel and see is change. At the vigil this year, there was so
much recovery representation it was breathtaking. I was looking at pics from the outreach with tears in my eyes. I had the same thoughts. Some of us came from the streets or are one decision away from being there. It is like what is, and what could be. The diversity, willingness and commitment from the community coming together was absolutely remarkable. It's early, it's cold, it's snowy but people "want" to give back. The spirit of Christmas  was definitely felt in every beautiful possible way."

Fitness:  30 in 40 Challenge

We start every fitness class at FTR by circling up and setting an intention. That's why we are charging into the new year with a simple challenge:   attend 30 fitness classes in 40 days.  It's easy. Our sign up board is almost full and we are racking up stickers, one sticker per class.  However we'd be happy to make another slot for you.  It's not too late to sign up.  The challenge runs from January 1 through February 9.

If you complete the challenge, you will get an FTR original "30 in 40" t-shirt. But more important than the t-shirt is the strength of habit and momentum you will build.  One of our core principles in the gym is consistency.  Ian says it at the start of every Bootcamp:
"Just show up, don't compare yourself to others, and do your best."

If you haven't read the trainer blog yet, check it out.  Each month, the FTR trainers write about their meaningful experiences.  They see inspiring moments every day and they want to share them with you. Do you have a golden nugget from the gym? Email our editor Sarah Kappos[email protected]
MISSION: FTR's mission is to provide people in recovery from drug and alcohol misuse with a safe place to connect through exercise, nutrition, creative expression and community service.
