Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons: New Department to Bring Humanities and Bioethics Into Focus
The Columbia University Trustees have approved the newest department for the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: the Department of Medical Humanities and Ethics.
Rita Charon, MD, PhD, professor of medicine at CUMC, is the inaugural chair.
The department, which launched Jan. 1, 2018, is one of two new departments approved since Systems Biology was established in 2013. The other, the Department of Emergency Medicine, was approved in late 2016, and the inaugural chair,
Angela M. Mills, MD
, will join Columbia in February 2018.

Under the exceptional leadership of Dr. Allan Wolkoff,
the Division of GI/Liver Diseases has experienced enormous growth since the merging of the GI and Liver divisions in 2010. With the addition of many successful innovative clinical programs, research initiatives, and multi-departmental collaborations at Montefiore and Einstein, the GI and Liver operations have grown so large that each now requires its own leader.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell: Medical School Community Hosts a Cultural Celebration
More than 200 attendees from all walks of life participated in the second annual "A Taste of Diversity Night" held on November 15, 2017, at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The event was coordinated by multiple medical student organizations to celebrate, share and promote understanding of various cultures, creeds, customs and orientations.

Columbia University College Of Physicians and Surgeons: Medical Students Launch Music at Bedside Program
On some days in the halls of Milstein Hospital Building at NewYork-Presbyterian
(NYP)/Columbia University Medical Center
(CUMC), the silvery sound of a violin playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" floats in the air. On other days, it might be a Bach "Cello Suite" or holiday carols by a brass quintet. The music is live and the performances are thanks to the new Music at Bedside Program, a collaboration between medical students in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons
(P&S) and palliative care professionals at NYP. The program's goal is to soothe and entertain patients enduring painful conditions.
