Welcome to the Spring 2018 semester! It is the first day back to classes and many students are arriving to campus for the first time. If you are new to our newsletter, welcome! We hope you find this newsletter resourceful with information you can share with your student, strategies for being a parent/family partner, and opportunities for you to remain connected to FAU.
As classes begin on all FAU campuses, students remain excited and eager to meet their classmates, connect with faculty members, and learn new material. January serves as a great time to encourage your student to learn about study sessions, tutoring offerings, or if their classes offer Supplemental Instruction. All these study resources will be helpful throughout their semester and during mid-term studying. For students that are new to campus, Spring Weeks of Welcome (WOW) provides a chance for them to get involved on campus, learn about student organizations, and meet their peers. We encourage all new students, and students that wish to join the fun, to attend these programs.
Throughout the academic year, if you have any questions or would like additional resources on how you can best support your student, please contact the Office of Parent and Family Programs. We serve as your one-stop-shop for all FAU information. We enjoy partnering with our FAU families to provide educational services and resources to enhance student success. The Career Center is excited to announce the Internship and Part-Time Job Fair on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and the Career Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 21, as well as several other career fairs and events this semester for students.
|
Internship and job opportunities are open to all students in any major. Students are encouraged to visit the Career Center to meet with a Career Consultant to prepare for the events.

Is your student ready to take flight? Spring Weeks of Welcome (WOW) at Florida Atlantic University helps your student begin to paint their Owl story. WOW will connect students to one another, allow your student to become familiar with campus, and have your student become acquainted with the many resources available. WOW wants to help prepare your student for a successful academic and social experience. In addition to many fun activities, WOW has planned educational sessions and workshops that connect students with campus partners.

Owl Breaks is an opportunity for FAU students to spend a Course/Semester Break serving a community in need. Students, along with a university staff member, travel to a city within or outside of Florida where they are immersed in service projects and learn about a particular social issue affecting that community.
To date this academic year, students have served around Food Insecurity in Fort Myers over Thanksgiving Break, and in the Florida Keys for Disaster Relief (The Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex posted a picture of the students on their Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/floridakeysrefuges/)as part of the Winter Break. Owl Break trips will also be taking place over Spring Break (March where participants are selected and placed on a trip based on their past service experience and interest in specific social issues.

The Owl Parent Association (OPA) invites you to join them for the 9th Annual Spring Fling Weekend! If you missed Parent & Family Weekend in the fall, this is a great opportunity to spend time with your student and enjoy the fun activities that are planned. We welcome back our friends who attended Fall Parent and Family Weekend.

The third annual WeLead: Diversity Matters Student Leadership Symposium will be taking place on the FAU Boca Raton campus on Saturday, January 27. WeLead is a one-day Symposium designed to broaden participants cultural competency and leadership knowledge. WeLead invites national speakers, workshop presenters and peers to facilitate opportunities for participants to learn about diversity and leadership and how to incorporate these lessons when working with diverse teams.

FAU Parking and Transportation Services is pleased to announce that visitor parking will soon get a high tech upgrade. In early 2018, new meters will be placed throughout all of FAU's campuses. Visitors will now pay by plate. The new meter increase will start once they are installed.

| If your student is commuting to campus, encourage them to stop by Wake Up Wednesday on January 10 in Parking Garage 1! Wake Up Wednesday is a great opportunity for commuter students to meet one another while grabbing free breakfast on their way to class. |
Did you know that by completing your FAFSA by the priority deadline you may be eligible for up to twice as much financial aid? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2018-2019 academic year is now available online at
fafsa.gov
. Complete your FAFSA NOW to maximize the financial aid you may be eligible to receive. The first priority deadline was January 1, however there is still time as the second priority deadline is March 1.

University Advising Services (UAS) helps your student develop and implement an academic plan for success at FAU. Our advising program is based on the Appreciative Advising model, which is the intentional practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experience and achieve their DREAMS, DESIGN a plan to achieve those dreams, and make necessary changes to ACHIEVE their goals. The advisee and advisor are partners, and below are a few tips on how you can be an APPRECIATIVE PARTNER with your FAU student.

- Disarm: Spark the excitement for beginning the FAU experience! Talk with your student about how they think college will be different from high school, and what they're looking forward to experiencing the most at FAU.

First-Year Student
- The second term is a time for new beginnings! While some students do well during their first term, there are others that may struggle to maintain grades they use to see in high school. Encourage your student to reflect on their semester and assist them in identifying new strategies to achieve better results. Whether your student did well or could use improvement, many students begin to question their major during the second semester. Your support of that decision-making process is crucial and it is encouraged to have conversations with your student throughout the process.
Second-Year Student
- Once students become comfortable during their collegiate career, there can be a new behavior of missing classes. Some classes at FAU may be 3 hours long, once a week, while others may be 50 minutes long, three times a week. During your student's autonomy development in college, they begin to decide whether or not to attend. Encourage your student to remain committed to attending classes, as important information can be missed by not being present.
Third-Year Student
- In a student's third year, they may begin taking courses within their major. The faculty members who teach these courses provide a wealth of knowledge in the field your student may be entering after college. Encourage your student to get to know their faculty member, as they can provide insight into the field, outside of what they will learn in class.
Fourth-Year Student
- The second term for a fourth-year student is imperative outside of the courses they are taking. It is time to begin the search for a job after college, specifically in the career field in which they hope to enter. While they do not have to do this alone, many students feel they do as they are unfamiliar with the campus resources. Encourage your student to begin crafting their resume with the Career Center. The Career Center offers many workshops, and individual consultations, to assist students in critiquing and perfecting their resume.
