Dear Neighbors,

The public is cordially invited to attend Lincoln Central Association's Annual Meeting & Election and neighborhood reception this coming Wednesday, January 24  at 6:30 PM.  Members and non-members alike are welcome to attend this meeting.

The meeting will again be held in the upstairs private room  Tobacco Road Tap Room  (2249 N. Lincoln Avenue) and will be followed by a free neighborhood reception lasting till 8:00 PM. During the meeting and reception, a selection of beverages and appetizers from the Tobacco Road menu will be served compliments of LCA and LCA member Tobacco Road.

If you plan to attend, please kindly RSVP. Though not required, RSVPs will be appreciated in order to help us plan quantities of food and beverage.  We hope to see you on the 24th! Please feel free to bring any guests you believe would be interested in learning more about LCA.

wineBased on positive feedback from LCA members who attended the private wine tasting reception at J9 Wine Bar last November, a second members-only reception has been set.

On Wednesday evening, March 7th, J9 again welcome LCA members to a free reception from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. The reception will feature various selections of one variety of wine  paired with delicious hors d'oeuvres. 

On an on-going basis, LCA members with a valid membership card receive a 21% discount.

Alderman Smith at 2017 Annual Meeting
Last year, a committee was formed to nominate individuals  to fill seats on LCA's Board which are open due to term expiration or otherwise. Pursuant to  LCA bylaws , the Nominating Committee was comprised of two currently sitting LCA Board members (Kathy Jordan and Anne Moore), and three general members (Judy Johanson, Mimi Duginger and Jerry Quandt). 


Directors elected Wednesday evening will serve a 2018-2019 term. Directors are allowed to serve three consecutive terms if they have remaining eligibility and re-nominated at the conclusion of their term.

In accordance with the bylaws as amended on June 4th, 2016, LCA's four Officers will be elected from the Board of Directors by the Directors. ( The full procedures for governing the election of  LCA's Board and its officers are outlined in the Association's by-laws.

At the conclusion of the brief election, LCA will host a free  neighborhood reception. The reception  is always a great  opportunity to get to know LCA Officers and Board members, connect with neighbors in a relaxed environment and express your views to your elected officials. Both 43rd Alderman Michele Smith  and  5th District Congressman Mike Quigley  generally attend this meeting along with other special guests.

DID YOU KNOW?

You do not need to serve on LCA's Board of Directors or live within the Association's geographic boundaries to serve on one of the Association's committees. You must, however, be a member of the organization.  The Association's committees in 2018 will include:

  • Communications & Membership
  • Arts & Culture
  • Events
  • Planning & Zoning
  • Community Affairs 
  • Governance
Work on 2018 committee assignments will begin later this month and will be formalized at the February 22nd, 2018 meeting of the Board of Directors, though individual committees may add members during there year. If you have an interest in serving on one or more of LCA's committees, please contact us  at your earliest convenience. 

Note: Interest in serving on LCA's Planning & Zoning Committee sometimes exceeds the Committee's capacity. Nevertheless, interested parties should make their interest known. Most other committees have a more elastic capacity.

BOARD MEMBERS COMPLETING 2015 - 2017 TERM WHO ARE RE-NOMINATED

David J. Free
Dave has been a Lincoln Park resident since 1991, and a longtime community volunteer. He lives on the 2200 block of North Lincoln Avenue with his wife Stephanie, and daughter Danielle. Dave values the cultural attractions, restaurants, many parks, and close access to Lake Michigan that Lincoln Park has to offer. Dave has spent his career in the investment management industry. He's worked at  Russell Investments for the past 12 years. Russell provides investment consulting, and investment management services to large institutional investors. Prior to Russell, Dave spent 12 years with Northern Trust Investments.

After being introduced to several LCA board members (and fellow dog owners) in  Oz Park , Dave previously served on the LCA board from 2004-2007. While on the board, Dave focused on  membership  and fundraising. Since returning to LCA's Board in 2015, Dave has served as the organization's Treasurer. He is a Lifetime Member of LCA.

Sally Drucker
Sally, Chair of LCA's Parks Committee, previously served on LCA's Board consecutively from 2010-2015. She rejoined the Board in 2017 to complete the unexpired term of a Board member who had resigned. She has embraced the parks, the neighbors and the friendly retailers who make Lincoln Park so inviting. Over the past seven years, she has been actively involved in LCA's effort to improve Fire Station Park culminating in a 2017 Chicago Excellence in Gardening AwardSally is a Lifetime Member of LCA.

Sally was born and raised in the Chicago area and has a strong appreciation of the history and architectural significance of the city and its neighborhoods. After raising her family in Wilmette and relocating with them to London for five years, she moved to Lincoln Park in 2006.  She now resides in the 2000 block of Cleveland Avenue. She has embraced the parks, the neighbors and the friendly retailers who make Lincoln Park so inviting. Five years ago, Sally began her own business, Drucker Mediation Services, serving the field of alternative dispute resolution. Her background is diverse - commercial lending, agribusiness finance, and cross-cultural consulting.

Her passion for conservation led her to The Nature Conservancy where she served as trustee for 10 years in Illinois. She also was instrumental in establishing the New Trier Rowing Club, now serving over 120 high school students. Sally has three children, all in their twenties, who love to come visit her in this vibrant community called Lincoln Park. 

Paul Shea
Paul was first elected to LCA'a Board in 2014 and was re-elected in 2016. He has been active with both events and parks, especially Lincoln Central Park. He has also been active working at LCA's events.

Paul moved to Chicago in 2001 with his wife, Terry, from New England and chose the Lincoln Park neighborhood for its vibrancy and closeness to all things Chicago, while still maintaining the look and feel of a place you could call home. They live on West Dickens with their nephew, Russell. They take part in many of the activities that the local community has to offer. Paul is an avid marathon runner and recently ran in the  marathon in Athens, Greece. He is currently a Senior Project Manager for a global software company and has been a director / manager for larger manufacturing companies for over 20 years. In that time, he's run various large capital projects that involved coordination with contracts, governmental agencies, and building trades. He was a volunteer member of the Personnel Planning Board for Granby, Massachusetts, a small town in Western Massachusetts before making the move to Chicago. He received an MBA in Business from the University of Rhode Island and is a Certified Associate Project Manager.

Nancy Morris
Nancy joined LCA's Board in 2015 to complete the unexpired term of a Director whose career prevented further active participation on LCA's Board. She is a native of Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from medical school there in 1978. She completed her residency at Michigan State after which she started her career as an emergency room physician at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. After working as a physician in the Midwest for a number of years, Nancy returned to Kansas City to raise her three sons. Now she settled in Chicago seven years ago and lives on Orchard Street with her husband Kurt.

Nancy's service to the neighborhood began several years ago when she volunteered to work in the Oz Park Gardens . She has remained an active volunteer ever since. She is also one of the most active volunteers at  Fire Station Park and Gardens, one of LCA's most important neighborhood initiatives. Regarding her community service, Nancy says: I have met lovely new people and deepened my appreciation for my new home city and neighborhood.  Now a grandmother, Nancy considers herself to be a "hopeful cook" and "want to be traveler." She is a member of the "Ray" at DePaul and enjoys working out there to stay fit.

Robert Rixer
Robert, a native of Perth, Australia has been an LCA member since 2016 and resides at 539 W. Dickens (Dickens & Mowhawk). He joined the Board in 2017 to complete the term of a Director who retired during their term. Prior to joining the Board, Robert had been an active LCA volunteer with a particular interest in events and membership.  In addition to his volunteer service for LCA, Robert has been a regular participant with Habitat for Humanity during the last year helping building homes in West Pullman.

Robert attended Illinois Institute of Technology on a soccer scholarship and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He was a four-year starter on the soccer team, a two-time All-Conference selection, the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the year and Captain of the team his Senior year. He currently assists the team with coaching and recruiting.

Since graduating from IIT, Robert has worked in the construction industry. He is employed by Power Construction-Luxury Residence Group serving as Project Engineer, managing the construction of luxury single family homes and condominiums. He is also an avid real estate investor focusing primarily on rehabbing and selling single family homes in the Chicago suburbs.

NEW BOARD NOMINEES
 
Donna Gallery
Donna and her husband, Ken Bauer, are both Chicago natives. In 1985, they purchased, and have twice renovated, an 1882 home on Burling Street. The home had once been the headmaster's residence for the adjacent Lutheran boys' school. Donna and Ken, have been Lincoln Park residents ever since, raising their son, Max, in this home. 
 
Donna's professional career in banking and finance with J.P. Morgan and legacy organizations, Lloyds Bank Plc and Harris Bank, encompasses 35 years of providing financial service solutions for high net worth individuals, professional service firms, international banking, Fortune 500 firms, and private sector companies, their executives and owners.
 
During her career, Donna completed international banking secondments in Paris, Frankfurt and Madrid. She acted as liaison for Marc Chagall's team during the installation of the "Four Seasons" mosaic in Chase Plaza, providing the French translation of Chagall's inspiration for this work, now archived in bank records. Donna co-founded J.P. Morgan's Private Wealth Management Art Initiative, a national marketing team delivering customized financial services to affluent art collectors. Throughout her career she has actively mentored women entrepreneurs as a member of a number women's business initiative organizations. She has been a member of the Lincoln Central Association Zoning board for the past 2 years.
 
Donna holds a BA in Foreign Languages from Northwestern University, teaching certifications in French and English as a Second Language, and an MBA (Finance) from DePaul University.

Tiffany Jozwiak, DDS
Tiffany grew up outside of Chicago and would take the train to the city any chance she got. Tiffany received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota. Upon graduating from dental school, she moved to Lincoln Park in 1997 and never left.  Tiffany  met her husband Mark, a technology executive, in the  neighborhood  and, together, they decided to raise their three children in Lincoln Park. 

In 2014, Tiffany opened Oz Park Family Dental (2215 N. Lincoln Avenue) after years of working in the suburbs. She also still maintains a practice at Prairie View Dental in Sycamore, Illinois. Tiffany is active at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School with a Girl Scout troop and as a member of the Board of ALESMA, Lincoln Elementary's  Music Association . She also teaches Sunday School at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. 

After enjoying all Lincoln Park has to offer, Tiffany had a desire to expand her community service activities to give back to a neighborhood that has provided her with so many "priceless memories." 

Tiffany's first active engagement with LCA came when Oz Park Family Dental participated in the 1 0th Annual Howler at Bauler as sponsor of the event's face painters. Impressed with the magic of an LCA neighborhood event, Oz Park Family Dental joined LCA as a Business Member. Tiffany and Mark then joined as Family Members. 

Tiffany's was motivated to join the Board in to share  ideas from her past and present experiences to help further LCA's initiatives to maintain and enhance our neighborhood 
 
Kelly Smith Dotson
Kelly is a sixteen year resident of the  Lincoln  Park area. She has been an active LCA volunteer since 2014 providing support in many areas. Kelly became Chair of LCA's Events Committee in 2017 and also serves on the Arts &  Culture  Committee.  Her  other volunteer  activities include a recent two year stint on the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau of Greater Chicago. Kelly is a Lifetime Member of LCA.

Kelly currently serves as Chief Marketing Officer of SAVO Group, a Goldman-Sachs backed tech company headquartered in downtown Chicago.  She is a seasoned business leader with former roles including Chief Commercial Officer of  Viad Corporation, a NYSE provider of marketing and destination experiences, and Chief Marketing Officer of Berkshire Hathaway's The Pampered Chef. 

Kelly also has deep experience in the technology sector having led worldwide marketing at Chicago-based NAVTEQ (now HERE). During Kelly's ten year tenure there, NAVTEQ grew from a privately-held digital map company through its NYSE IPO in 2004 and subsequent $8.1 billion acquisition by Nokia Corporation in 2008. Early in her career, Kelly  worked for nearly a decade with Leo Burnett and spent five those years living in Europe on various  assignments  including in London,  Madrid and Oslo. 

Kelly  holds a degree in Marketing from the University of Notre Dame. 

DEPARTING BOARD MEMBERS

Bob Segal
LCA Board member Bob Segal, who has also served as a valued member of the Planning & Zoning Committee for several years, is completing a 2016-2017 term. Bob was re-nominated to serve a 2018-2019 term. Due to health issues which he believes will prevent his active participation in Board activities for the foreseeable future, however, Bob requested last week that his nomination be withdrawn and he will depart from the Board at the conclusion of his current term. Please join us in thanking Bob for his his many contributions to our community and in wishing him all the best. 

Bob's withdrawal came after the deadline for nominations for this election had passed. As a result, the Board will still have one vacancy after Wednesday evening's election which will be filled in accordance with LCA's bylaws.

James Borkman
LCA's Secretary, James Borkman, who also serves Chair of LCA's Governance Committee and as a member of the Arts & Culture Committee, is completing a 2016-2017 term. Due to term-limits set forth in the association's bylaws, James is ineligible for re-nomination for a new term at this year's election but he intends to continue active participation in LCA initiatives.

Please join us in thanking James for his years of valuable service to LCA in many capacities and to the neighborhood. 

Betsy Costello
Betsy Costello, Chair of LCA's Community Affairs Committee, is completing a 2016-2017 Board term. Prior to the formation of the Nominating Committee for the upcoming election, Betsy indicated her intent to retire from the Board at the conclusion of her current term and requested that her name be withdrawn from consideration.

Please join us in thanking Betsy for her valuable service to LCA and to the neighborhood. We look forward to Betsy's continuation as an active LCA member.
RETURNING BOARD MEMBERS SERVING 2017-2018 TERM

Kenneth Dotson
Kenneth has lived in Lincoln Park since 1999. He was founding VP of Marketing and co-author of the business plan for Sportsline.com. After raising $40 million of venture capital, SportsLine  successfully completed an  IPO and a secondary offering on NASDAQ. Following a partnership with CBS, the website was rebranded  cbssports.com . After SportsLine, he served as Sr. VP of Marketing at PlanetAll,  acquired by Amazon.com  in 1998, and then as Chief Marketing Officer at uBid.com. Later, Kenneth served as CMO for TicketsNow, acquired by Ticketmaster in 2008. During Kenneth's marketing leadership, a more than 280% increase in revenue led to  TicketsNow was named to Inc. 500 index  of the fastest growing private companies in America.

Kenneth has been an active  neighborhood  volunteer since moving to Lincoln Park in 2000. He joined LCA shortly after moving to Lincoln Park  and is a Lifetime Member.  In 2012 Mayor Emmanuel appointed Kenneth to serve as a Commissioner of the  Lincoln Avenue SSA  and  reappointed  him to a second term in 2015. Kenneth served as Chair of the Advisory Committee for the  SSA's 15 year reconstitution  in 2015, and has as Chairman of the Commission since 2016. He serves on the DePaul Neighborhood Advisory Committee, the Neighborhood Liaison Committee to Hines-McCaffery Interests, developer of Lincoln Common, the Lincoln Avenue  Strategic Plan  Steering Committee and is Lincoln Central's neighborhood liaison to Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. 

Kenneth was elected to LCA's Board in 2014 and President in 2015. He is co-editor of LCA's newsletter, From the Heart, winner of APEX Awards for Publication Excellence in 2016 and 2017. All of Kenneth's neighborhood roles are on a volunteer basis. In 2016, he was the inaugural recipient of the  Neighborhood Champion  award from the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce. The award honors a resident within the Lincoln Park neighborhood who has made a positive impact through his or her actions within the community.

Kathleen Jordan
Kathleen, a retired medical writer and a long time community volunteer, has resided in Lincoln Park since 1977. 
Kathy was elected to LCA's Board in 2013  and has served as Vice President since 2015. She also served LCA in those roles in the 1990's. She serves as Chair of LCA's Communications & Membership  Committee and co-Chair of the Parks Committee. She also serves on the Arts & Culture, and Governance committees. She co-edits and is a feature writer for From the Heart. In 2017, an article Kathy authored received an APEX Award for Publication Excellence. She is a Lifetime Member of LCA.

Kathy is also a member of the Board of the Oz Park Advisory Council. She served as OPAC's Secretary from 1994 to 2000 and as its President from 2000 to 2007. Since 1994, she has been a volunteer in the Park's gardens. She has been a Guest Engagement volunteer at Shedd Aquarium since 2009 and serves on its Interpretive Volunteer Advisory Council. She has served as  
Tribute Fund Chair for the League CSO Association and a member of their bylaws committee. 

Kathy was a volunteer docent at Lincoln Park Zoo from 1995 to 2009. She served from 1992 to 2002 on the  Chicago Police Department's 18th District  Advisory Committee and as its Secretary. During that time, Kathy formed a Brownie Scout Troop for girls living in the Cabrini Green housing units and was named a  Hometown Hero  by the American Red Cross for her efforts. She also received the CAPS program's Good Neighbor Award for her work on the DAC. Kathy graduated from Loyola University with a BA in communications.  

Anne Moore
Anne Moore is a 30+ year resident of Lincoln Park. She and her husband,  Harry Dent, rebuilt an 1890's brick Victorian on Cleveland Avenue, creating a family home for their three children. A  journalist, Anne's office is at the top of that home, overlooking Old Town's green trees.

Anne was elected to a two year term on LCA's Board in 2015 and re-elected in 2017. Anne previously served on Lincoln Central's Board from 2000 to 2006. During that time, she wrote and published the Lincoln Central newsletter and worked on parks and beautification. With others, she rewrote LCA's zoning and planning guidelines, creating a process that is orderly, transparent and open to the public. 

Anne has chaired LCA's Planning & Zoning Committee since 2006. In this role, she work with the Alderman's office, developers, retailers, homeowners and neighbors to maintain and improve our beautiful historic neighborhood. She is particularly interested in permeability, green space and overbuilding. In addition to serving as Planning & Zoning Chair, Anne was a charter member of LCA's Arts & Culture Committee. She also frequently writes feature articles for the LCA newsletter, From the Heart, winner of consecutive APEX Awards for Publication Excellence.

Anne is a graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, where she won the  Lenore Marshall Prize for poetry. Read more at  Anne's website.

Alex Hlavacek
Alex and his wife Karen, along with their daughter Hannah, live in the Lincoln Central neighborhood. He became interested in LCA in October of 2014 when, during the same weekend, he walked by LCA's Award Winning Fire Station Park and brought Hannah to Howler at Bauler. After expressing appreciation at the event for LCA's contributions to the neighborhood, Alex joined LCA and inquired about how to become more involved. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2015 and re-elected in 2017. Since joining the Board, Alex has been active with LCA's events. He served as Chair of the Events Committee in 2016 and remained actively engaged with the Committee in 2017.

Alex is responsible for evaluating and structuring institutional joint venture partnerships for companies that are a part of  The Inland Real Estate Group of Companies, Inc. Prior to joining Inland Institutional Capital Partners, Mr. Hlavacek was Chief Operating Officer at McShane Medical Partners, where he helped create and manage a joint venture between McShane and a national real estate investment trust. Before McShane Medical Partners, Mr. Hlavacek was Vice President in CBRE's Capital Markets group where he was responsible for representing institutional owners in the sale of CBD and suburban property. Prior to CBRE, Mr. Hlavacek was Vice President of Acquisitions at Great Lakes REIT, where he was responsible for new investments and dispositions.

Mr. Hlavacek earned a Master of Business Administration degree from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University. He holds a FINRA series 65 license and is an active member of the Urban Land Institute Real Estate Investment Association, and the International Council of Shopping Centers. Alex is a Lifetime Member of LCA.
