A Word from Jay on Partnerships...
One of the reasons I believe that the CDP has been so successful in our work is our ability to partner and collaborate with other non-profits serving the region. We offer a broad range of programs designed to make housing affordable and enable small businesses to thrive. By partnering with other agencies we can provide services that may be beyond our expertise and leverage resources that might not be available if we go it alone.

Our work to support fishing businesses is seen as a national model and is successful because of our partnerships with the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance and Wellfleet SPAT . By bringing our expertise in small business technical assistance and access to capital, together with the depth of experience our partners have in working with fishing and shell-fishing businesses, we are able to serve these two important sectors of the Lower Cape economy.

The CDP's 72 affordable homes are so important for the families who make up our residents and who are vital members of our community. Some of our residents face health and mental health challenges that threaten their ability to pay rent and secure their housing. As an agency, we don't have the expertise to provide social service support to our residents. Fortunately our colleagues at the Homeless Prevention Council are skilled case managers and equipped to help families navigate a crisis. Thanks to a grant from the Mary Louise Eddy & Ruth N. Eddy Foundation, we contract with Homeless Prevention Council to support our residents and with  Gosnold on Cape Cod  to provide case management services for the eight residents of Canal House - our sober living residence.

Over the past year, through our collaboration with the Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC), we have trained over 140 municipal officials on Cape Cod on ways to address the affordable housing challenges in their towns. With the CDP focusing on the Lower and Outer Cape and HAC focusing on the Mid and Upper Cape, we have joined forces to tackle a Cape wide problem.

Our partnerships also lead to creativity and innovation. By working with colleagues with different experiences and expertise, we strengthen each other and create better opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape.

Canal House as a path to recovery

It was his arrest in 2016 that was the real turning point.  Nick, now 32 years old, grew up in Sandwich and started using drugs while in high school. Addicted to heroin he was incarcerated numerous times for drug-related offenses.   
 
When he was arrested in 2016, he was sentenced to 18 months in jail. At his nine month parole hearing he was given a list of sober living facilities to choose from - he chose Canal House. 


Supporting Local Businesses
A grant to help small businesses thrive

In 2016 Liz and Amy Escher, owners of the apparel store ARTichoke in Eastham, needed to hire a professional photographer to take photos of their clothing products.  It was a necessity but it was financially out of reach.

That is when they reached out to the CDP for a Small Business Professional Services grant which enabled the sisters to create professional marketing materials to use at trade shows. Not only was it a big help to them but the grants had proven to be very beneficial to 16 other local businesses who took advantage of the program back in 2015 and 2016.

Founded in 1982, The Laurel School is a small innovative learning environment that serves children from pre-school to 4th grade. Located on a wooded lot, down a dirt road in Brewster, the school has sought to fulfill its mission of "...nature, service, community connections...helping (their students) to become responsible architects of positive change in the world."

As part of that change, the school's leadership wanted to do more in the way of recycling and the "greening" of how they went about their day to day business. Last summer, one of the parents mentioned to Courtney Mills, Director of Operations and Admissions, that the CDP offered a Cape & Islands Green Certification Program. When Mills took the course in October, she was pleased to learn that the school was already doing a number of the things that were discussed during the training. There were, of course, plenty of opportunities for improvement.

Housing Rehabilitation Program: Information Session 
                                               
Come learn about opportunities available through the Housing Rehabilitation Program. Funds are available to eligible residents to pay for critical home repairs, such as: 
  • Roofing and siding
  • Lead paint abatement
  • Heating and Plumbing
  • Minor Structural Repairs
  • Windows and Doors
  • Energy Efficiency Upgrades
