Thoughts from the Chair
Happy New Year!
Dreams are just dreams when goals are not set to make dreams reality. Denzel Washington once encouraged a group of students by telling them that the steps between your goal and achievement are discipline and consistency. My question this month is; are we really ready to make our dreams come true?

Greetings to my friends and neighbors in Asylum Hill!
Happy New Year!
While the 2017 legislative session had more than its share of challenges, with hard work and perseverance, the General Assembly approved a full menu of legislation. We were able to pass legislation that further tackles the opioid crisis, continues our efforts to reform the criminal justice system and expands health care coverage to those who need it most.
These new laws, which just went into effect Jan. 1, not only put families first but further improve Connecticut's quality of life.

West Middle Community School: an update
West Middle 7th grade students at Career day at Aetna
.
The students were welcomed by Brenda Pabon Program Consultant,
In Community Relations and Urban Marketing at Aetna. They walked into the great Room were they were given continental breakfast. They had an opportunity to hear from speakers from different departments and participate in a Q& A. Next they were off to a tour of the facility. Some of the major highlights along the way were the decorative elevators, the bronze statue in the entrance and the old vault.

Asylum Hill Then And Now |
Sometimes coming across an old photo can serve as an encouraging reminder of
just how far we've come. This before photo brought on a flood of memories of the sustained team effort that eventually changed this before image of 1 Imlay into the beautiful "after" home below. Aetna, NINA and AHNA all worked together to make it happen, and it's a beautiful example of the progress that's been made over the years.

Capitol View Deli
About three months ago Mohamed (Mo) Alkatabi reopened the Capitol View Deli at 628 Asylum Ave. He started slowly, with hours and menu choices, but now he's looking to expand both. He's offering hot food sandwiches now for lunch as well as omelets and other egg breakfasts. He hopes to have dinners soon and wants to be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm seven days a week. For now, his hours are: 8AM-6PM Monday-Friday, 9AM-3PM Saturday.

The Passing of Albert Bell
In the five years of the Asylum Hill News & Views we have never written an obituary until now. The recent passing of Albert Bell has changed that. His memorial Service took place December 16th at Grace Lutheran Church where he had been an active member for many years. Grace was just one of the many parts of his life that while saddened by his passing, came together to celebrate his living.

South Marshall Street Habitat Dedication
On December 21
st
at 10:00 am more than 100 people gathered at the final 6 homes built on South Marshall St by Habitat for Humanity. The event was especially momentous because these six new homeowners will join the 16 Habitat homeowners across the street to bring stability and a stronger sense of neighborhood to this long troubled block.
There to celebrate were partners and representatives of the many organizations that brought this final project to fruition. Mayor Bronin representing the City of Hartford and Evonne Klein, CT Commissioner of the Dept. of Housing were there and both spoke at the Dedication.

UCONN Men At Boys and Girls Club
December 16
th
was the annual Holiday celebration at the Asylum Hill Boys & Girls Club. Along with gifts for the children and families, there was the appearance of UCONN Coach Kevin Ollie and more than a dozen of the Husky Men's Basketball team.
It should be pretty well know by now that Coach Ollie is especially fond of the Boys & Girls Clubs as was his predecessor, Coach Calhoun. After all, his foundation provided brightly colored variously configured hoops at the back of the Club for the special children for whom a standard 10' hoop just doesn't work.

Dance In Asylum Hill
Dance instruction, and the performances that come with it are an important part of the culture here in Asylum Hill. Holiday performances are a common part of that. This year it all started on December 8
th
and 9
th
with Studio 860's performance of
The Gift.
Staged at the nearby Charter Oak Cultural Center, this company who recently moved into their new studio at 256 Farmington Ave (the site of the old Mark Twain Branch Library) has been growing and expanding recently. More on that in another piece to follow.
The music performed to was a mix of everything from Stevie Wonder and John Coltrane to Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West.

Caroling In The Park
Once again, Santa made his annual trip to Sigourney Square Park, and in true Asylum Hill style, it was a team effort. He arrived compliments of the Hartford Fire Dept. with an escort by our Asylum Hill CSO Sid Palmieri, and was greeted by several very tall elves as well as the Hartford Proud Drill, Drum and Dance Corp, with carols lead by the Youth Challenge choir. The entire event was produced by Friends of Sigourney Square Park and directed by Luwannia Johnson Martin with technical assistance by NINA.
