Latest News
Despite the beautiful weather we enjoyed on Friday the weekend brought with it the famous Baku Breeze and much cooler temperatures. Due several tee times cancelations on Saturday the events team cancelled the weekly Roll Up due a lack of players to make a competition .

Tee Times – Weekend
Although no frost this past weekend, it certainly felt like it! We will continue to reserve 8.30 / 8.40 / 8.50am as Possible Frost Delay Tee Times. Therefore a 9.00am Tee time will be the first time to be booked each Saturday and Sunday however those players will have the option to arrive early so that once the course inspection is completed the starter may open the 1st Tee.

2018 Tournaments
We are currently finalising the calendar and look forward to publishing the fixture list for the coming season very soon. For January we will continue with the weekly roll up events as the weather towards the end of the month is looking a little wintery.
WELL DONE
Congratulations to Dreamland Golf Club’s Operations Manager Anton Samsonov who has been awarded the Director of Golf Diploma from the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland. After completing the distance learning course, John Mulgrew PGA Master Professional & Education Assessor, visited Azerbaijan to meet Anton and study his role within the club. Seeing first hand Anton’s hard work and commitment, ensured that he not only passed the high criteria set, but in doing so also became the first Russian PGA Professional to achieve this recognition. Commenting on the award Phil Jones Fellow PGA Professional and Club GM, “We are delighted to see Anton achieve the Director of Golf qualification. As a Golf Club we pride ourselves not only growing the sport in Azerbaijan, but developing our team with education and learning opportunities forming milestones in their careers. As a Russian PGA Golf Professional working overseas Anton’s passion for growing the game, managing tournaments along with the day to day operating of the club, naturally makes him a stand out employee, we are delighted to have him on board with us here in Baku”.

GOLF COURSE NEWS - Golf Superintendent Martin McGavock
As regular players know, we experience a lot of issues with wind and sand movement in many of our bunkers. One area affected badly is the beginning of the waste bunker on Hole 9 as the prevailing wind moves sand forward into the lake. The gradual buildup of sand on the rock work and the lake liner allows for unsightly weeds and plants to take root. To solve the issue our team is currently removing 180sqm of bunker which will be replaced by turf grass. On the positive side for golfers the waste bunker entry point becomes further down the hole and therefore more forgiving while still keeping its intention of a lakeside hazard.

YARDAGE SIGNS
Elsewhere on course, we are working on a lot of small jobs which may not be immediately noticed by players but does enhance course detail and keep presentation paramount. These jobs range from raising sprinklers and tee/fairway yardage markers (see below) as the surfaces slowly rise from the sand applications we apply multiple times per year. Raising the sprinklers level with the surface avoids water coverage issues and impeding golf balls.

We look forward to sharing more of our winter works in future newsletters.

Head Pro Tip of the week - "Beat the Baku Breeze"

As you know this is the time of the year when we take on the challenge of some strong windy conditions in colder temperatures. My old coach, the legendary Bob Torrance, used to tell me “Playing golf is an art … and a great rtist has to have the ability to adapt. Any great player should have the ability to take on the challenge of windy conditions and the best player to ADAPT will come out on top.” Wise words from a great man! Here are a few ESSENTIAL TIPS I would recommend you to think about when playing in windy conditions:

1. GOLF IS A GAME OF MISSES - therefore when playing in windy conditions this is only going to be exaggerated. This is where you need to manage yourself on the course and take into consideration the safe places to miss but still leave yourself in play. As a prime example look at Holes 3,4,6,9,11,12 and 18 …. The miss here is 100% LONG LEFT – short right WILL ALWAYS BE PUNISHED on our golf course.

2. CLUB SELECTION IS KEY – I constantly see the mistake in amateur golf in NOT TAKING ENOUGH CLUB so when playing in a strong wind this is even more punished. Take extra club when playing into the head and cross winds … this will help lower ball flight and give you more control.

3. IN THE BREEZY … SWING IT EASY this is so true. The wind forces us to want to hit the ball harder which often just imparts more SPIN and LOOSE CONTROL. Take extra club and SWING WITHIN YOURSELF. This will help focus on a better quality strike and give control

4. PUTTING IS MOST EFFECTED – often over looked when playing in the wind is the affect it will have on the greens. You must take the wind into consideration when looking at the line of your putts, and how speed will be affected when putting into the wind VS putting downwind. So next time it is blowing, make sure you get out on the green for 15-20 mins before the round and get a feel for speed control.

5. SHAFT LEAN AT IMPACT – this is where you should look to see PGA Professional advice. It is a fact that the best players in windy conditions are those with a swing where HANDS ARE LEADING THE CLUB AT IMPACT (delofting the club) this helps to control quality of strike and launch angle … producing a more penetrating flight in the wind. Often a poorer area of amateur technique SCOOPING THE BALL IN THE AIR will certainly make playing in wind must harder to get control. Get booked in for a lesson and understand how to improve this.

6. LOVE TO SCRAMBLE – Padraig Harrington always told me that he loved waking up in the morning of a tournament and seeing windy conditions outside. This is because he loved the opportunity to show of his SHORT GAME SKILLS and he knew the conditions would separate the MEN VS THE BOYS!! So the better your short game is the more chance you have of scrambling around the greens and lowering your scores.

In normal conditions I would average around 13-14 greens in regulation per round at Dreamland GC. This is NOT the case in windy tough conditions (probably more like 9-10 greens in regulation) so there is certainly even more of a focus on short game. LIMIT THE DAMAGE when it goes wrong … and for me at times it certainly will go wrong … but we need to turn that bad shot/swing into a BOGEY MAX and not run up higher numbers which are a killer for the scorecard!!
Footgolf is now available on a Monday evening from 5pm till 8pm with floodlight play available on our academy Par 3 course. This is a great new initiative to grow awareness in Azerbaijan and to mix the worldwide passion for football into golf course concepts and scoring system. If you have not tried this then we would highly recommend you get along on a Monday evening to try it out. We will certainly look to grow this concept now in 2018. The cost is 20azn per person for 18 holes and we can provide the footballs. For more information on Footgolf please contact academy@dreamlandgolfclub.com
We will follow the same class schedule for the week ahead with our local market class on Wednesday evening 7pm till 8pm. This “get into golf” class is the perfect way to get Professionally introduced to golf in a nice relaxed environment for only 20azn. ALL WELCOME to come and join the fun!! Direct access is available to the golf academy on this evening and throughout the week Monday till Friday.

Ladies class will continue each Wednesday at 1pm and has been a proven success in 2017. Delighted to see new faces now out playing regularly on the golf course through using the benefits of the class, regular Par 3 course play on a Monday and now onto the Championship course. we look forward to welcoming new faces and growing our ladies section in 2018….even if it is chilly pop down for a coffee and a chat, and learn some great tips on how to improve.
