A message from The Rev. Ernie Boyer

God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much . . . And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God.  Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. -
Ephesians 2:4, 8-10 (New Life Version)

The New Year is almost upon us, and as always it is a time for both reflection and anticipation - both looking back on the year that has passed and looking forward to all that is ahead. Now is a good time to recall that, contrary to what many believe, God's love does not include demands. It is truly unconditional. It is not, "I'll love you if you do . . . (fill in the blank), but rather "I love you because you are who you are."

That is because, as this wonderful translation of Ephesians reminds us, "we are God's masterpiece," each one of us. In practical terms this means that God does not want anything FROM us. God only wants something FOR us. And what does God want for us?
  • God wants us to know peace.
  • God wants us to know that we belong.
  • God wants us to know love.
In short, God wants us to know HAPPINESS.

That's easy enough, right?

Well, maybe not.

The trouble is, we don't always know how to get these things, so God tries to show us the way. Again and again God points out how to go about it. If we want peace, all we need to do is trust: have faith that God is in control. If we want to belong, all we have to do is reach out to others: cherish others for who they are and they will do the same for you. Finally, and most important, if we want to know love we need only GIVE love: we need only open ourselves, to others for love to flood into our lives. These are not requirements that God demands of us. They are gifts that God hopes we will accept.

May we all know the wonder of these gifts in the year ahead!

Peace and grace,
Ernie+

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FOOD DISTRIBUTION AT SANTA MARIA URBAN MINISTRY -- SATURDAY, JANUARY 6
by Janet Thorsrud

Saturday, January 6, SMUM needs 5 people to help distribute food to their clients. The food needs to be boxed up first. That's where you come in. We will meet in the church parking lot at 8 am to carpool to SMUM.

This is an excellent opportunity for children to help. Melissa went with us to help hand out gifts before Christmas. She was amazing!!! We then went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch.

So far only Susan Z has told me she can join me. Who else is up for a field trip?? Let me know.

Spaghetti Dinner
Feast of Lights Evening Prayer
Epiphany Twelfth-Night Party

Please sign up HERE to let us know if you will attend the dinner -- and if you can help in one or more areas. We need a headcount in order to have enough food.

I hope that you will join us in this celebration of the end of the Christmas Season! Our tradition at St. Stephen's is that the men get together and prepare a Spaghetti dinner. I need some help to pull this together, there will be some set up and prep on Friday, early evening. Then help to prepare and serve the dinner on Saturday followed by cleanup after. Please consider helping with this event, then bring the family and enjoy this fun celebration! You can contact me if you can help.

Friday Journal editor needed.....

Please let Father Ernie know if you would be interested in a volunteer position at St. Stephen's to edit and publish the weekly Friday Journal, or possibly a monthly newsletter with updates as needed throughout the month.  Experience with Constant Contact is a plus, but we could train you.  We are working to simplify the format of the newsletter, and are open to new ideas.  We estimate that the time requirement is 2 to 3 hours per week and it can be done from home.

Let us know what you think.....
This Friday Journal has a new format.  Please let us know what you think by responding to   julie@ssitf.org

If you wish to submit an article for the Friday Journal, please send it by email by Thursday noon of each week to   julie@ssitf.org.  Thank you.
