January is National Mentoring Month
To kick off the month, we will be hosting a webinar entitled "
Strategies for Mentoring Girls in STEM," on
January 11, 2018 at 1:00 PM Pacific (4:00 PM Eastern) featuring
Techbridge Girls and
FabFems. The webinar will cover tangible takeaways for educators seeking to utilize mentors in their programming, in addition to concrete strategies mentors can use to engage girls. Throughout the remainder of the month, we will be featuring mentors in cybersecurity, engineering, and health on our social media channels. View the

New National Champions Board Members We welcome our newest member Jenn Behrens, Partner and Executive Vice President of Privacy for Kuma and Chief Privacy Officer for Verato. Jenn focuses on supporting organizations in transition from compliance to commitment in privacy excellence, and has led the privacy-engineering and risk management efforts for multiple National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cybersecurity pilots, as well as in the commercial marketplace. Check out the NGCP guest blog post Jen wrote for National Mentoring Month titled: The Right Mentor at the Right Time.
National Champions Board members are selected to give a balance of desirable expertise and regional representation, including industry representatives, informal learning educators, gender equity experts, science and mathematics education representatives, and educational policy experts.
Research Consortium on STEM Career Pathways Student Survey The National Girls Collaborative is collaborating with American Association of Physics Teachers, Destination Imagination, National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity, and Educational Research Center of America on a research project focused on high school students' perceptions of STEM careers. High school STEM teachers will be receiving surveys this month. By including your students as part of this important research project, you can help them:
- further consider their strengths, interests, and the career options open to them;
- receive information from colleges, universities, career and technical schools, and other post-secondary institutions seeking to recruit students with their specific interests, talents, skill sets, and career goals; and
- gain more access to post-secondary scholarship opportunities.

SciGirls Professional Development Training St. Paul, MN; January 27, 2018 Based on the Emmy-award winning PBS KIDS television series SciGirls, local educators are invited to participate in this hands-on, minds-on professional development training hosted by the Great Lakes Aquarium and the Hartley Nature Center. Attendees will learn the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM, experience hands-on STEM activities, leave with curriculum that puts a creative twist on teaching STEM, learn how to modify activities to engage kids in STEM using the SciGirls Seven and discover additional online resources that enhance teaching and learning experiences for all kids. A half-day event designed to encourage girls to choose a career in engineering. This is achieved through two congruent programs: Middle School Girls Program and Parent Educator Program. All girls registered for the SWE Girls Program will participate in a hands-on engineering experience with members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Conference
Houston, TX; February 8-10, 2018
The annual AMTE conference provides inclusive opportunities for a diverse community of mathematics educators to share current research and practice findings. This year's conference features a general session on Equity presented by Laurie Rubel and Stephen Russell.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting

The AAAS is dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of all people. The 2018 theme, "Advancing Science: Discovery to Application" focuses on how to speed progress by amplifying collaboration across sectors and disciplines. Women of Color STEM Entrepreneurship Conference
Mesa, AZ; March 1-3, 2018
The conference is a collaborative effort to advocate for increased participation of women of color in entrepreneurship experiences and small business enterprise; to advance entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial student engagement; and to transform the ways that entrepreneurship is viewed, taught, and experienced in higher education.

National Afterschool Association (NAA) Convention

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in networking, learning, and inspiration: special events, workshops, daily keynotes, and an interactive Learning Expo all designed to meet the needs of the developing professionals and emerging and current leaders of afterschool. National Mentoring Month, we are highlighting
CoderGals.

female high school mentors teach elementary school girls how to code. CoderGals' mission is to spark young girls' interest in coding through fun, creative, and collaborative projects
taught by female mentors in workshops. The projects are designed to demonstrate that code can be used to build anything that a girl can imagine - from games to fashion to robots. We need to expose young girls to code if we want to raise a new generation of girls that are excited about STEM. Many girls lose interest in STEM by the end of elementary school. Once girls opt out, it's harder for them to regain interest later on. In order for them to stay interested, they have to know that STEM is fun, creative, and a way to solve problems. Coding is the most accessible aspect of STEM, and is easy for anyone to learn. Additionally, CoderGals provides a way for schools without a computer science curriculum to expose their students to coding.
Start a Chapter in Your Area: Any girl in high school or college can start a CoderGals chapter. No prior coding experience is required by either the teachers or students and the curriculum is easy to learn.

January is National Mentoring Month National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors to guide our youth. Research shows girls benefit from relationships with role models and mentors who can provide valuable information about STEM careers. FabFems A collection of resources for role models, educators, and parents to inspire and educate girls about science, computer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses and careers. The website includes Resources for Role Models and Resources for Girls.
National Mentoring Resource Center A collection of mentoring resources including handbooks, curricula, manuals, and other resources that practitioners can use to implement and further develop program practices.
NCWIT Mentoring Resources The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) developed Mentoring-in-a-Box: Technical Women at Work, to help women excel in the technical professions and advance to positions of leadership. Another resource is Evaluating a Mentoring Program Guide, which provides a step-by-step plan with example metrics for evaluating a workplace mentoring program (in either industry or academia). SciGirls Role Model Strategies SciGirls Role Model Strategies: Encouraging Girls to Consider STEM Careers offers basic training for role models, introducing them to best practices for their volunteer efforts. Techbridge are available to help develop skills to engage girls and underrepresented youth in STEM through guides, videos, and questions. International Day of Women and Girls in Science Forum United Nations Headquarters in New York February 8-9, 2018 The International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science and technology communities. The 2018 priority theme is "Equality and Parity in Science for Peace and Development." The purpose of this Forum is to harness the strategies, expertise and resources across the broadest spectrum of policy-makers, professionals, civil society and the private sector to move equality and parity in science for sustainable development into the mainstream discourse. Registration deadline is January 26, 2018. Register.
