HOSPICE HAPPENINGS - January, 2018

Good News for 2018
The spirit and philosophy of hospice is to provide compassionate care for individuals and families facing a life-limiting or life-threatening diagnosis - without the added burden of fees.

Over the years, Pilgrims has offered programs and services at low cost, or no cost, to clients experiencing financial difficulty, and have never turned anyone away due to lack of funds.

We are pleased to announce that from January 1, 2018, we are offering our programs and services at no cost to our clients.

For our clients, this change is priceless - removing any financial barriers to accessing the help they need, at a time already full of painful decisions and difficulties.

The ability for Pilgrims to waive fees is only possible through the generosity of individual donors, family foundations and corporate sponsors in the community - thank you for your continuing care!

(Pilgrims still charges a nominal $10 per visit to the Day Program, as part of our agreement with Alberta Health Services).

Wish List Granted
Resources for recreation are so important in the Adult Respite Day Program, and we've had a number of items on our 'Wish List' for a while.

A recent donation from Alberta Blue Cross Hearts of Blueallowed us to purchase some fantastic new items.

The clients are thrilled with the new giant crossword puzzle, golf putt, large piece puzzles, and fun art & fitness supplies.

These tools help us to improve the quality of our programming - assisting clients in meeting goals such as maintaining mobility and stamina, reducing depression, anxiety & boredom, and improving cognition & self-esteem.

A huge thank you to Hearts of Blue for their generous donation!

Celebrating 102 Years of Life

Birthday cake and celebrations are part of the love and laughter often found at Pilgrims Hospice, but it isn't every day we get to honour a client turning 102!

Along with lunch and a special cake for Tom Richards, last week's celebrations included a presentation by Pilgrims Hospice Recreation Therapist, Gillian Bennett ( pictured above, standing next to Tom, centre), of what life was like when Tom was born in Edmonton over a century ago.

"Tom has an amazing wit and sense of humour. It's great he's so engaged in life", says Gillian.

Travis McEwan caught the celebrations for CBC News. See the video and read the interview highlights here
"I will always be grateful to Pilgrims Hospice. Their eyes are not only on the dying but also on the living."
- Patty Milligan

Patty and her son, Rory, found life-changing help through the Expressive Arts for Grieving Children, Teens & Families Program at Pilgrims Hospice. Read their full story here.

Generous donations to our year-end appeal raised over $18,500, to help individuals and families grieving the death of a loved one. Thank You!

Volunteer of the Month
Jaymie Griffin is our Volunteer of the Month for January. Jaymie came to Pilgrims last summer and  immediately took an interest in supporting the  Adult Day Program on Tuesdays.

Jaymie's warm and outgoing personality has made a positive impact on our clients, staff and fellow volunteers.

Thoughtful and observant, Jaymie is always aware of what each client might need - be it a cup of coffee, a second helping of lunch, or just someone to sit with and talk to. She's always the first to help and constantly asks what more she can do to assist staff & make our clients comfortable.

With many of the volunteers and staff away this month, Jaymie has worked extra hard and been extra reliable for the program. Thank you Jaymie!
Our Funding
Pilgrims Hospice is grateful for the support of the Alberta Government, who provided 9.5% of our funding in 2017.

Thanks to the generosity of people like you...  individuals and families receive the compassionate end-of-life & bereavement support they need. Thank you for your care.
