The Importance of Long Term Infrastructure Planning
The Importance of Infrastructure - Ray Gibbon Drive Announcement
by Monty Killoh ([email protected]
)

On February 25th, the City of St. Albert and the Government of Alberta announced a partnership agreement to share the costs of twinning Ray Gibbon Drive. Ray Gibbon Drive is currently a two-lane arterial road that spans the western side of St. Albert, connecting Edmonton and the Anthony Henday Drive with commercial areas such as Riel Business Park, the Shoppes at Giroux and the upcoming Lakeview Business District. The road also provides access to various residential neighborhoods, including Lacombe Park, North Ridge, Deer Ridge, and the new neighborhoods of Riverside and Jensen Lakes.

City Council had already approved funds for initial design work as part of their 2019-2021 Business Plan and 2019 Budget; this design work is expected to begin this year, and with the cost-sharing agreement now in place with the Province, construction will begin next year. The work will be completed in four phases, over a 10-year period, starting at the south end of Ray Gibbon Drive near the Anthony Henday ring road.

The twinning of the road will help diversify St. Albert's economy, spur growth along the corridor, improve transportation efficiency and safety, reduce traffic congestion and improve the commute for thousands of local, regional and provincial motorists. The road is identified as a key roadway in St. Albert's
Transportation Master Plan  and in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region's Growth Plan, and will continue to play a significant role in the region's transportation network. Future projects, including the construction of Fowler Way within St. Albert, and the future extension of 127th Street, will also help to improve the region's transportation network.

Long-term infrastructure planning - such as transportation and road planning as found in the Transportation Ma ster Plan - are key to creating a stable and sustainable environment where land developers can have confidence that the necessary infrastructure will be in place to support the future growth of their potential developments. For example, the upcoming completion of the Project 9 sanitary sewer upgrade and the recent Ray Gibbon Drive announcement are vital infrastructure pieces to the development of the Lakeview Business District on the west side of Ray Gibbon Drive; developers now have morecertainty that the City and the Province are creating an infrastructure network that will be able to bring and sustain growth in the area for the coming decades.

New Direction for Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI)
by Nicole Pearson ([email protected])

NABI is celebrating their thirtieth-year with an updated brand and new strategic direction. Along with the launch of a new logo and website, NABI has developed a new program called WayPoint, which focuses on establishing a strong community of mentors-as-investors. The program will find and fund opportunities for experiential learning around investing and mentoring scale-ups and startups.

The program is designed to help smaller tech companies get mentoring from senior-level professionals who would not generally have had previous experience in the innovation ecosystem.
The program was developed after Northern Ontario Angels, which is an organization that connects Angel Investors with businesses. The Executive Director of Northern Ontario Angels has been working with NABI as they roll out the program and will continue to work with them during the initial stages of the program launch.

While WayPoint is being rolled out in communities across Northern Alberta, including St. Albert, NABI will be first be working with the economic department in Beaumont to identify mentors in their community.

Business Spotlight On... The Paddle Room
by Nicole Pearson ( [email protected] )

There is little doubt that the game of pickleball has seen an increase in popularity recently. From its beginning back in 1965 in Bainbridge, Washington, the game has come a l ong way. While it is hard to find exact numbers as to how much it has grown over the past few years, Pickleball Alberta indicates that it's the fastest growing sport in Canada and America (per the Pickleball Alberta website).

Jorge Quintero and Vinh Ngo recognized the growth in the sport and the need for more indoor space to play the game. Both transitioned from other racquet sports, Quintero from squash and Ngo from table tennis, where booking a court or having your own table was the norm. When they started to play pickleball, they found that with only drop-in play available, they spent as much time on the sidelines waiting for their turn as on the court. They felt the need for a dedicated pickleball space where people could book court times throughout the day and space wasn't shared with other sports. They decided to open a dedicated pickleball facility and began to search for a suitable location in West Edmonton, knowing that they wanted to be close to the Anthony Henday to make travel easy for people in Edmonton, St. Albert, Stony Plain and Spruce Grove. While they didn't find a location in West Edmonton that met their needs, they did find one in Campbell Business Park in St. Albert.

The Paddle Room opened in November 2018 and has two full-sized pickleball courts and one dinking court - a small practice court with a net and 7' on either side. The first of its kind in Canada, The Paddle Room uses the same court surface as found on outdoor courts and offers members access to pickleball courts 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Members can book court times online up to seven days in advance. Bookings by members makes up 50% of The Paddle Room's bookings with drop-in and private bookings compromising the remaining 50%. People travel from as far away as Calgary on a weekly basis to use the facility.

With a junior league and monthly tournaments for all skill levels, Jorge and Vinh are hoping to help the sport of pickleball continue to grow and help others develop the skills they need to take their game to the next level. They also host private bookings including corporate events, birthdays, Christmas parties and other functions to give people who have never tried the sport an opportunity to experience it.

If you are looking for a sport that is easy to learn and can be played by all ages and fitness levels, then give pickleball a try.
