Army University Chooses UC

The University of Charleston was one of only five schools chosen to be part of Army University's Continuing Education Degree Program (CEDP) initiative in Leadership. The program is available to all enlisted soldiers in the US Army to improve their leadership skills using voluntary education.

The University signed an Articulation of Understanding with The Army University for the awarding of course credit for two programs - the Associate of Science in Frontline Leadership and the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership. (UC is the only school chosen for both an Associate Degree program and Bachelor Degree program.)

The Army University is a multiyear organizational effort to create a flexible, professional military education process. It was designed to create a learning environment to produce agile, adaptive and innovative leaders across the Total Force in support of the Army Operating Concept.

Army University became fully operational in November, 2017, and will provide the force with a single point of contact for all Army education matters to address the educational needs of the Army while providing individual soldiers and civilians the opportunity to accomplish their own respective academic goals.

We currently have 496 undergraduate and 110 graduate students who are veterans or current military members enrolled, some of whom are defending our country while participating in courses via WebEx. We were recently named a Military Friendly School for the eighth year in a row by Victory Media, and we are also the highest ranking West Virginia school on the Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 list.

The Gift of Data

The University of Charleston has received a $1.2 million gift from the Maier Foundation, Inc. for start-up funding for a Data Analytics Laboratory and program.

The Foundation board of directors unanimously elected to grant the $1.2 million dollars to the project, funded over a five year period.

"We expect this program and laboratory to be a key addition to the innovation activities taking place at the University of Charleston," stated Brad M. Rowe, president of the Maier Foundation, Inc. "Our only request was that the laboratory be named the "Welch Laboratory," in honor of Dr. Edwin Welch's service and leadership at the University of Charleston."

Meet Alum and Mentor, Jason Elliott!

Jason is a 2016 graduate of the UC MBA program and currently works as a financial analyst for Quality Insights in Charleston, West Virginia. Shortly after graduating from UC, Jason inquired how he might get involved and give back to the program that helped him accelerate his professional career. It was then that he learned of the mentor program, which he saw as the "perfect opportunity to give back to the UC MBA program and help develop the next generation of business professionals that will become West Virginia's future business leaders."

Jason had this to say about his time so far as a UC mentor: " I cannot speak highly enough about the UC MBA mentor program.  It's given me the opportunity to work with some amazing young students that are just on the verge of beginning their successful careers.  While I've certainly been able to offer advice and recommendations based on my past experiences, I've also learned a tremendous amount from working with these students as well.  I've thoroughly enjoyed the mentor experience, and would strongly encourage other UC alumni to consider becoming a mentor."

Interested in joining Jason and other alumni by becoming a mentor to a UC student majoring in business?  The time commitment is low - one hour every two weeks. The mentorship can be as short as one semester, but can be longer if mentors have a good experience and wish to continue.  For more information and to express interest, please contact  Travis Kahle
