Class of 2018 Excels on Part II Boards!
According to Michael J. Trepal, DPM ('81), FACFAS, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean, the Class of 2018 achieved what are "possibly record-setting scores" on the Part II Boards. On the written portion they achieved a 98% first time Pass Rate and on CSPE they accomplished a 95% first time Pass Rate. Congrats to all who taught or supported the Class!

E. Giannin Perez, Class of 2011, Establishes Scholarship for Fourth-Year Students

After attending the Alumni Relations Association meeting at the New York Podiatric Clinical Conference and Exhibition in January, E. Giannin Perez, DPM, Class of 2011, was inspired to create a scholarship for fourth-year students going on externships. "During the meeting there was talk about how we could support our students and I thought of what could have helped me when I was a student," she said. Dr. Stephanie Maurais has been part of the  NYCPM faculty since 2016, but the route she traveled to get here was more circuitous than most.
Dr. Maurais was born in Montreal, grew up there, and began to study podiatry at the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR) in 2004; she was part of the school's inaugural class in podiatry. NYCPM Students "Don't Walk By" and Serve the Homeless Community

On Saturday, February 17, the Presbyterian Church at 55th Street and 5th Avenue in midtown hosted the "Do Not Walk By" event, which provided food, clothing and medical services to homeless individuals. Four NYCPM students (Stephen Cheng ('21), Farhan Osmani ('20), Ying Shao ('19) and Jennifer Chow ('19) volunteered at the event and provided foot screenings, along with alumna Alecia Williams, DPM ('05), who provided treatment for fungal and bacterial skin infections, dystrophic nails and other conditions. The podiatry team worked closely with the medical team. During the 2:30-8:30 shift, the podiatry department saw almost 40 patients. Jennifer Chow reports that "it was an incredibly fulfilling and humbling experience to be able to serve the community."

"No one is born with perfect feet" - Joseph D'Amico, DPM

, alumnus Joseph D'Amico, DPM was interviewed by Broadway personage Seth Rudetsky, whose eponymous radio shows are carried on Sirius XM. He interviewed Dr. D'Amico, who has treated many in the Broadway community, about foot health issues that affect performers and everyone.

On the show, Dr. D'Amico discussed how faulty foot function affects the knee, hip and back, and suggested that "anyone experiencing lower extremity pain would benefit by starting from the ground up and have their feet examined."
Dr. D'Amico is Professor of Orthopedics at NYCPM, and is a leader in the field of biomechanics and serves as Scientific Chair of the annual Richard O. Schuster Biomechanics Seminar.

International Podiatry Club Spreads Some Love for Valentine's Day
IPC President Thi Pham ('19) and VP Jennifer Chow ('19) distributed 70 Rose-grams on Valentine's Day - each a fresh red rose with packet of "conversation" candies, and an optional message -- sent by faculty and students who wanted to send personal messages (or remain anonymous).

The IPC Rose-gram fundraiser was founded last year and was such a success that the club decided to make it an annual event; this year the club is raising funds for its medical mission to the Dominican Republic.
The club grossed over $300! VP Chow said that
this fundraiser would not have been possible without the help of the IPC board. President-elects TJ Austero ('20), and Rahim Lakhani ('20), secretary Ronika Sethi ('19), treasurer Jessi Dhami ('20), third-year class representatives Justin Muser ('19) and Kim Innoco (19), second-year class representative Marisa Giustiniano ('20), first-year class representatives Rovern Anthony ('21) and Paul Marinos ('21).

In Memoriam
Ivan Abrahamson, DPM ('58)
Part of a tri-generational family of podiatrists, Ivan Abrahamson, DPM, graduated from NYCPM in 1958; his father was a podiatrist and his son, Hal F. Abrahamson, was a 1989 graduate of NYCPM.
A resident of Queens, Ivan was a delegate to the NYSPMA House of Delegates and held all positions in the Queens Division, including being elected president twice.
Ivan was loved and respected by his patients, his many friends and colleagues, and was always known as the "perfect gentleman." He is survived by Hal, daughter-in-law Paula,
another son, Jeff, and his loving wife Jean,
who is a Certified Podiatric Assistant and his office manager of many years, and their grandchildren.

Adjunct Instructor in forensic podiatry Bryan Kagan, DPM ('80) gave two forensic podiatry presentations to the pedorthic session at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists meeting in New Orleans in mid-February. His presentations were: 1) "Forensic Podiatry - Shoe Gear and Insole Analysis;" and 2) "A Puzzling Step in the Right Direction," which was about new research in insole identification.
