Issue #189 - February 22, 2018

From the Carpenter's Bench:
The Spirit led Jesus into the desert...After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. Then the Devil came to him and said, "If you are God's Son, order these stones to turn into bread." But Jesus answered, "The scripture says, 'Man cannot live on bread alone, but needs every word that God speaks." Matthew 4:1-4

As a boy, Arturo Toscanini attended Italy's Royal Academy of Music. Because he was poor, he sold to other students the meat from his meals so that he could buy musical scores.
Like Jesus himself, Toscanini belongs to that elite group whose generous spirit has enriched the human race.
His story moves me to recall a time when I sacrificed to the "hurting point" for something. I am not sure if I have ever gone to such extremes of sacrifice, but I know that I have been dedicated to succeed and achieve different goals throughout my life! I think having children is an enormous sacrifice because as parents we pour every ounce of energy into our kids to allow them to succeed. This is not always easy because our children do not always "get it," and sometimes they take the sacrifices we make for granted! I have to always remember my wife, Susan, and the sacrifices she makes for my two boys! They are too numerous to mention here, but I sure appreciate her keeping all of her boys in line! As we continue to move through our Lenten season, let us realize and embrace not only the sacrifices we make, but the sacrifices others make for us on a daily basis.

"Life must be dedicated to a destiny in order to have a meaning." Jose Ortega Y Gasset

Theatre News

"A Midsemester Night's Dream," written by Jennifer Hughes, is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare's famous play by the (almost) same name. The play begins with a St. Joseph Catholic High School student, Mia, who falls asleep while studying for finals with "That 70's Show" playing in the background. She lands squarely in a dream that includes cameo appearances from several of our own SJCHS teachers and finds herself thrown into the leading role of a totally groovy version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Along the way she meets John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Freddy Mercury (King of the Fairies) and Janis Joplin. You won't want to miss the far-out, family-friendly production! Performances are one-weekend only:  March 8 , 9 and 10 @  7pm  each night in our newly upgraded Evans Black Box Theater. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $7 per person, or can be reserved by calling Scott at  801-394-1515 . We'll see you there!
