Nominations Due for Citizen of the Year!

Nominations are now being accepted for our 2018 Lafayette Citizen of the Year. Do you have a person in mind for this year’s nomination?

  • Must be a current Lafayette resident.
  • Must be someone who has given of their time, money or energy to help make Lafayette a healthy community, where people will want to live, work and shop.
  • Must be someone who models excellence in everything they do.
  • Must be someone who brings this community together and/or makes us proud to be a member of the community.
 
A celebration dinner will be held March 23 at the Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa to honor the winner! The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, February 16 at 1:00pm. Nominations can be sent to [email protected].

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the City of Lafayette, the City is offering flags with the City logo on them. Two sizes, 3x5 feet and 5x8 feet. See attached form for cost and ordering information.

Flags are digitally printed with the Lafayette City logo printed in color on a white background on heavy nylon, bound around the perimeter and fitted with brass grommets on one end. The flag has about a one year outdoor life span on a pole. Deadline to order is Tuesday, April 3. Personal delivery in 3 to 4 weeks. Lamorinda Arts Council's 15th annual High School Visual Arts Competition
The High School Visual Arts Competition is open to all high school students living in and/or attending public or private school, including all schools in the Acalanes Union High School District, in the Lamorinda area, defined as Moraga, Lafayete and Orinda. The registration deadline is February 23rd at midnight. Students will exhibit their work at the Orinda Library Gallery from March 1st to 26th. An Artists & Awards Reception will be held at the gallery on March 7th from 7-8:30pm. Elfenworks Center for Responsible Business at Saint Mary's College Conference on Business and Human Rights
Thursday, March 1, 12:30pm-7:30pm, Soda Activity Center: Plaza, 1928 Saint Mary's Road, Moraga
The conference aims to promote a dialogue that embeds human rights issues in broader philosophical, ethical, and Catholic frameworks. The half-day conference will have two panel sessions followed by a keynote speech. Learn more here.

Connected Horse programs at Xenophon Therapeutic Riding Center in Orinda
Based on the innovative Connected Horse Research at UC Davis, Xenophon is offering 4 week Equine Assisted Workshops for people with early stage dementia and their care partners. No horse experience necessary, all activities from the ground, no riding. Participants must be ambulatory and have the physical stamina to be at the barn for 2-3 hours. Care givers and persons with dementia must be able to participate as a pair. This new experience offers participants the opportunity to benefit from non riding activities with horses. Benefits can include improved non verbal communication, increased confidence, improved sleep and reduced feelings of depression or anxiety. View Flyer. 2018 Moraga Community Faire & Car Show

Save the date! The 12th Annual Moraga Community Faire & Car Show put on by the Moraga Chamber of Commerce will be on Saturday, May 12th, 11:00-4:00pm at the Rheem Valley Shopping Center! This popular community event attracts over 2,500 local residents each year, will have live music, kid’s activities – including the popular pony rides, local art, Moraga youth, schools and Saint Mary’s College, wine tasting, food trucks, as well as our local businesses, non-profits and service organizations – and almost 100 stunning classic cars! The event is open to Moraga, Orinda and Lafayette based businesses, and Moraga Chamber Members. Winter Photography Contest
Now through February 14, 2018
Teens – take your best shot! Use winter as your theme and take whatever photo evokes that theme. Three winners will be selected. Lafayette visual arts teachers from the local middle schools and high schools will help judge. Winners' photos will be displayed in the Teen Center for two weeks. Photos can either be e-mailed to [email protected] with the Subject Line “Winter Photography Contest” or brought in to the Lafayette Library (max size of 8.5″x11″). AARP Free Tax Assistance
Fridays, through April 13, 2018
10:00 AM - 3:30 PM Oak Room
IRS-certified AARP Tax-Aide volunteers provide free tax preparation for low-moderate income Contra Costa County residents. This service is offered to people of all ages, with special attention to those 50+. One appointment per tax return can be scheduled. Walk-ins accepted, but priority is given to those with an appointment. Please call the main desk at 925-385-2280 to register.

Teens: Help the Homeless
Wednesday, February 14, 4pm-5pm, Teen Center
This Valentine's Day, show some love by writing letters and cards, and help put together care packages for the homeless served by the Trinity Center. The Trinity Center requests the following donated items for care packages: toiletries, snacks, socks, gloves and hand warmers. Items can be brought in advance to the Information Desk to the attention of Patrick. For Grades 6-12. Learn more here.

Documentary Film: Sinking of the Gustloff
Thursday, February 15, 6pm, Arts & Science
Learn about one of the greatest maritime disasters ever in this gripping documentary film about the 1945 sinking of a German transport carrying nearly 9,000 refugees by a Soviet submarine. The film follows three survivors as they return to the site of tragedy for the first time since the sinking. Popcorn and licorice will be served. This film is for high school students as part of the Lamorinda Teens Read "One Community*One Book" program. Learn more here.
