Lovejoy HS News 02 12 18

P arents and Guardians,

Tonight is our Showcase event at LHS from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., and we are looking forward to a great evening that highlights the curricular and extracurricular opportunities for high school students. There will be tables set up in the LHS Commons where current staff and students will be available to share about their programs and answer questions for parents and students. There are also two parent informational meetings that coincide with tonight's event to help parents better understand the course registration process for their students. These meetings will also contain general information about course selection, transcript information, and graduation requirements for LHS students. The first meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. and is specifically designed for current 8th grade parents. The second meeting begins at 7:15 p.m. and is for current 9th-11th parents. Both meetings will take place in the LHS Auditorium.

This Friday, February 16th and next Monday, February 19th are student holidays. Lovejoy High School will be closed on both of those days. I hope you and your student have a great four-day weekend.

Please take a few minutes to review the information below regarding important dates and events that are coming up here at LHS.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

LHS Wrestling

High School results from the District Championships:

Our men wrestled in a tough district tournament Thursday and we were able to advance 9 of our 11 wrestlers to the regional tournament next week in Bryan.  Our team finished 4th overall out of a tough 10-team district.

All of these men had some great matches but two in particular stood out for the Leopards: Senior James Ayers became DISTRICT CHAMPION for the first time in his career.  He wrestled an exciting championship match where he scored the winning points in the last 10 seconds to defeat his opponent! See the winning takedown below:

Secondly, sophomore Alex Vislosky had a great tournament, finishing as the silver medalist despite being seeded only 5th overall.  Alex had two great wins including his semifinal bout where he dominated the #1 seed in route to a 5-3 decision.  Below, Alex completes one of the key takedowns in his semifinal match:

Our women's team also wrestled well, advancing all five of our wrestlers to the regional tournament, with four of them being district finalists with two district champions!  The team finished 5th in the team standings despite only having half of the weights covered.  Once again leading the team was Junior Morgan Elvin, who captures her first district championship with a convincing first period pin in the finals.  Morgan awaits the call by the official for her pin and district championship!

Sophomore Alex LeFort also kept her win streak alive and dominated her bracket with to pins on her way to her first district championship.  Alex was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler by the district coaches for her performance!  Alex works for the pin on her way to her first district championship!

Junior Lilly Musselman and sophomore Katherine Heath both were silver medalists while freshman Charis Vela took home the bronze!

Here are the individual placers from Thursday:
6th - Chris Repak
4th - Johnny Dorlon, David Gold, Jakob Underwood, Joe Ridgeway, Austen Shelley
3rd - Charis Vela, Hunter Duncan, Ralph Rucker,
2nd - Lilly Musselman, Katherine Heath, Alex Vislosky
District Champion-James Ayers, Alex LeFort, Morgan Elvin

For complete match results to both the men and women district tournaments, please click below:

JV District Championship Results:
Our JV men travelled to Melissa for the JV district championships this past Saturday and wrestled excellent!  For the second year in a row, our JV won the UIL District 9-5A championship!  We had 8 wrestlers and 7 placed in the top four with 4 champions!

The Leopards were led by champions Zack Valentine, Jack McKinney, Blake Slaughter, and Will Hannah.  McKinney, Slaughter, and Hannah all pinned their opponents in their finals match to help seal the team championship for Lovejoy!

The placers are:
4th - Daniel Schmidt
3rd - Gunner Peschke
2nd - Dalton Braun
Champions-Zack Valentine, Jack McKinney, Blake Slaughter, Will Hannah

For a complete list of all the JV district results click here.

Just a quick FYI, if you are unable to follow our varsity the next two weeks, you can follow our teams online through track wrestling.  Both the regional and state tournaments will be run on this website. You can watch live time wrestling and follow our team even if you are not able to travel with us!  The Regional tournament can be followed by clicking on either of these two links:

2018 UIL Region 3 - 5A Boys

This will bring you to the tournament and you can follow the live action or check out results, brackets, and team scores among many other things!

LHS Bowling
The Varsity boys' bowling team won a very important match against Wylie High School last week, putting them in 4-way tie for 2nd in District.  The Girls' varsity was tied for 3rd place with Plano East, but with a big win against Wylie, they are now securely in 3rd place in District.

Boys' varsity won a very exciting match 9-6, while the Girls' varsity swept their match 15-0.

Our bowlers had some incredible scores during the past 2 week's matches.  Please congratulate the following bowlers on these (not so easy) accomplishments!

Boys:
  • Varsity bowler Noah Cooper bowled his personal high game of 289.  He started the game with 10 strikes in a row!! (A perfect game is 12 strikes in a row)
  • Varsity bowler Sam Oates bowled his high game of the season of 212, which is 43 pins over his average.
  • JV bowler Tyler Brucher bowled a 181 game, which is 47 pins over his average.
Girls:
  • Varsity bowler Katherine Carter bowled her personal high game of the season with a 192 game.
  • JV bowler Lauren Perry continues to bowl strong games, including a 157 game.
With only 1 week left in the season, our Varsity Boys (pictured below) will be bowling hard against Allen High School as they continue to fight for a place at Regionals.  Join us in cheering them on this Monday night, Feb 12th, 6-8pm, at Allen Bowl.

The next event for the UIL journalism team will be the district meet at Highland Park on March 23 where they hope to defend last year's team championship.

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on February 13th and March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.
