St. Michael's Academy
:
During our recent 2nd grade grandparent event, one of our grandparents, Mr. Brennan, spoke at the conclusion of the program. His words really struck me and I wanted to share them with you.
He eloquently spoke about how our students are happy, focused and disciplined in an environment that is structured but does not feel like a "military academy." It made me appreciate our faculty, staff and families and how we all work together to create a successful learning environment.
This learning environment is funded by a variety of sources, one of them being the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Diocesan collection supports our Catholic schools as well as many other service ministries such as The Gray House.
This week, the executive director of
The Gray House spoke to the students about the wonderful programs they provide for our community. Please consider supporting this Appeal on a
personal level as well as through our bake sale next Tuesday.
I am hoping that you might find an extra hour between now and then to bake up a tasty treat! And don't forget to send your child(ren) with a few dollars to purchase something delicious!
Sounds like we will have a nice weekend - enjoy!
Peace,
Ann E. Dougal
Principal

From The Classroom of Mr. Desroches - Gym and Health
|
Be Active And Stay Healthy
Starting off the 2018 new year, the middle level students have begun the volleyball unit. In this unit, like many of our other sports oriented units, students will grasp the skills that the game of volleyball calls for. These include how to set the ball, volley the ball and serve the ball. We will also learn the rules of the game as well as certain strategies that they can use when they get into game play. Students will learn about teamwork and the importance that it carries when it comes to participating in a team sport. This important lesson will help them find success when they are playing with other classmates.
The philosophy I try to instill in the students when it comes to skill sports like the game of volleyball, is effort and having fun. Not everyone may enjoy playing or love some of the sports that we learn about and participate in. For me as a teacher, I look for them to try and give it their best. I want all the students to have fun being active and staying healthy.
In the health classroom, some of our younger students have been learning about the 5 senses and how important they are every single day even though we may not notice it. We've been learning about distinguishing certain parts of the eyes and ears as well as learning about how many different smells our noses can remember. With this knowledge, our focus has been understanding the adaptations people have to make when they may not have the ability to hear or see. Most recently, we've been learning some sign language and how to sign our own names! The importance of this unit was to educate and inform the students about how truly lucky they are to have the ability to do things such as see our surroundings, hear our teachers in the classroom or even be able to touch a pencil to do our homework.

"This Is Us"
Ms. Quesnel's 3rd grade students had fun this month with their "This Is Us" bulletin board. In preparation for President's Day, the students made themselves into little George Washingtons. They loved the project and could not stop laughing at what they looked like with white hair. These were made for their "This is Us" board which is changed monthly to show how unique each student in the class is.

Food For Thought

"What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like."
