Programs of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton
Jewish Federation of Edmonton
We had a very productive and well attended AGM this past week. At the meeting, the community voted (80 in favour, 34 against) for the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton to proceed with negotiations to build a JCC at the Talmud Torah. If a final agreement can be reached with the Talmud Torah and Edmonton Public Schools, the Board has the authority to approve it. As a part of the motion, the community has directed that at least $1 million be raised by November 30, 2019.

The Board of Directors will convene early in the new year to discuss next steps, including finalizing negotiations with the Talmud Torah and looking at details surrounding a campaign to raise funds.

The Jewish Federation of Edmonton and its fundraising arm, the United Jewish Appeal, require a significant amount of volunteers throughout the year. The next steps to get the JCC built will require even more volunteers than we normally have.

In order to make this work, we need your help. If you are interested in getting involved with the JCC or with any of our other volunteer opportunities, please contact Debby Shoctor at debbys@edjfed.org or Steve Shafir at steves@edjfed.org

Beth Israel President’s Message

On December 7, 2018, the Young Adults Group of the Beth Israel Congregation held a Shabbat Dinner. The event was extremely successful with over 70 individuals attending, both adults and children. The meal was fantastic and all enjoyed a very warm and inviting atmosphere, a model shabbat dinner and celebration.
Unfortunately, even at the time of the dinner and certainly within 24 to 36 hours after the event, there were a significant number of individuals who became ill with gastrointestinal symptoms. Approximately 25 of those attending became ill, although there were family members who did not attend who were also ill around that time.

I contacted Alberta Health Services on Sunday morning, Dec. 9 when it became evident that there was a problem. AHS investigates episodes such as this when a group of individuals become ill and they have an ongoing investigation, interviewing those who attended the dinner. I spoke with the investigators today and the following is what we know so far:

We do not have a certain cause for the “outbreak” of individuals with symptoms. Based on what the investigators have found so far, the most likely cause is related to a viral infection such as (but not necessarily) Norovirus. There has been a much higher incidence if this type of infection in the Edmonton area this winter season (AHS posted a public notice of this last month), so it is not at all unlikely. They base their assumption of the cause of the Beth Israel outbreak on the onset of symptoms of 12-24 hours, the length of the symptoms of 24-48 hours and the fact that all individuals involved have basically recovered. To our knowledge, nobody was hospitalized.

The food for this event was prepared and served by a very thoughtful and careful group of volunteers from this Young Adult BI group. There was no “professional caterer” involved with this meal in any way. AHS states that Norovirus spreads typically in those who are in close contact and with one individual who was quite ill attending the dinner, that alone may have been the cause. If food which is uncooked or already cooked, is handled by an individual carrying the virus (with symptoms or recently recovered from the viral symptoms, 1-2 weeks) and then served, this could result in passage of the virus...although this is not necessary for such an outbreak.

The bottom line is that we may never know the true cause of the illness, but it is most likely viral and not related to food preparation or food source. This type of event should be a reminder for all of us that if you or members of your immediate family are ill, do not go out into the public and spread the infection. Stay home and recover!! There is the potential that you could spread the virus for at least 48 hours after symptoms clear and perhaps up to 1-2 weeks later! Wash your hands and be very careful in handling food.

Above all, stay healthy!
Shabbat Shalom
