Martin Rising
Miss Meg recommends Martin Rising: Requiem for a King by Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brain Pinkney

As written on the inside cover, "Martin Rising is a stunning, poetic presentation of the final months of Martin Luther King, Jr's life - told in a rich embroidery of visions, color, musical cadence, deep emotion, and multiple layers of meaning."

Written as a series of "docu-poems" with beautifully rendered water color illustrations, Andrea and Brian Pinkney follow the last few months of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life. Set against the back drop of Memphis, TN, his 39
th birthday and his presence there to support the black sanitation workers strike, it is a powerful celebration of the peace loving activist, whose dream of equality changed the course of American history.

The last poem, "Rejoice the Legacy" states,
"We remember, we recite. We, who believe, rejoice his legacy. And yet, we still cry for that darkest hour for his soul's middle passage through ugly seas. But in the swill of our tears, we find gladness too. Because, from the blackness of unknowing, a sliver of light shines through trees of grief, illuminating the answer to an urgent question: Can a Dream ever die? A burst of sun replies: His life well lived for peace and good. Martin's spirit - still alive! And with love, we all shall rise."
