April 26-27, 2018 | Disneyland Resort
"The Sky's the Limit" - have you ever said that or thought that? That is one of the themes of the California Women Lead Women's Conference April 26 - 27, 2018 at the Disneyland Resort. When women leave the conference, our goal is for them to feel like they can do anything - personally, professionally or politically and know there are other women in California who will support them, encourage them, push them to pursue their leadership goals.
California Women Lead believes there is so much women can do when we are determined to work together, even if we do not agree on everything, but still support one another in our personal leadership journeys. I know in today's political environment, many think that is not possible, but I disagree. I have the privilege to travel across the state and meet women from different backgrounds, ethnicities, political affiliations and I am struck, that we have more that brings us together than separates us and if we focus on what we have in common, we can move our state forward in ways we could never imagine - the Sky is the Limit!

I hope you will consider joining us at this conference and network with other women who want to be change makers - in their workplace, in their community and in our state. I hope you will come and be inspired, but more importantly, inspire other women to take risks and see what could happen if they believe they can pursue their leadership goals, knowing there are other women to encourage and support them. Especially if they think "the Sky's the Limit!"

Tickets are going fast and space is limited. You can download information about the conference, purchase an individual ticket or, better yet, get a few girlfriends together and purchase a table by visiting our website at www.cawomenlead.org.

See you in April!

SESSION HIGHLIGHT: NEGOTIATING SKILLS TO IMPROVE YOUR GAME

It is a known fact; traditional models of negotiation do not work for women--they go against everything a woman was taught growing up. As a society, most women learn at a young age that it is not appropriate or "feminine" to focus on what they want, assert their own ambitions, and pursue their self-interest-and many people don't like it when they do. From the time we are very young, girls are taught to focus on the needs of others rather than on their own. Young girls subconsciously internalize these messages into adulthood and as women find themselves with an internal struggle to ask for what they want. We are unaware that our reluctance to ask for what we want is a learned behavior, and one that can be unlearned. In order for women to negotiate effectively, they must -- Be comfortable with our Power; Eliminate the Limiting Dis-empowering Beliefs that make us anxious to negotiate; and develop new empowering beliefs that make it easy to ask for what we want.

In this session we will focus on the acquisition of essential negotiating and leadership skills. During this highly interactive program, women will learn to negotiate in accordance with internationally recognized best practice techniques, and discover their own negotiation style. They will discover how to use their natural strengths and gain confidence in those areas where they are least confident now. This session helps prepare women to negotiate in a professional manner, improving their bottom line results and relationships with clients, colleagues and stakeholders.

Session presenter:
Anne Sheehan, Director of Corporate Governance, CalSTRS

Ms. Sheehan is the Director of Corporate Governance for the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS), the largest educator-only public pension fund in the world, where she is responsible for overseeing all corporate governance activities for the fund including proxy voting, company engagements and managing over $5 billion placed with activists and sustainability managers. Prior to that, she served as Chief Deputy Director for Policy at the California Department of Finance. During her tenure at Finance, Sheehan served on both the CalSTRS and CalPERS Boards as well as serving as the Executive Director of the Governor's Post-Employment Benefits Commission. She has also served as the Chair of the Council of Institutional Investors for two years, as well as having served two terms on the NASDAQ Listing Council. Sheehan is currently Chair of the SEC's Investor Advisory Committee, a member of the Advisory Board of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, and a member of the Board of Directors of the 30 Percent Coalition. Sheehan has been named one of the 100 most influential people on corporate governance by Directorship magazine for the past seven years.
